'House' recap: Cuddy's enormous laptop, plus: actual plot points

Cuddy_laptop Let’s discuss last night’s 100th episode, "The Greater Good" — or what I like to call "House Goes Out Of Its Way to Make The 100th Episode Not All That Special." ZERO Cameron/Chase action, and nobody died — even though Thirteen’s been beggin’ for it for months! Really, House? It’s more than a little sad that the two most lingering impressions I took from House were how huge Cuddy’s laptop seemed (look at that thing! optical illusion?! it’s freaking me out!) and how happy Taub’s wife (pretty much a nonentity until last night) is with her personal life. Ho, hum.

The Thirteen/Foreman romance (that last night featured them lounging non-seductively on a huge bed about five feet apart — intimate!) is a total waste of time, so I refuse to discuss it here. I will give props to Olivia Wilde’s ability to "play blind," even though it might be as simple as avoiding eye contact with other actors in the same room. I really believed she was blind. Maybe I just wanted her to be blind. And then die.

I definitely enjoyed the cancer researcher-turned-cooking student Patient of the Week and her influence on Foreman, Taub, and especially the underutilized Wilson. We don’t usually see him and his floppy hair putzing around at home, so I’d just about forgotten that Wilson’s been woefully trapped in a suffocating aura of Dead Amber and her Things. Wash that coffee mug, Robert Sean Leonard — wash it good! (He didn’t. No soap, nary a wipe, barely a rinse! I know, I know. This is TV.)

I liked Kutner last night, too, especially when he refused to do real work until House let him in on what was going on with Foreman and Thirteen. Go back and watch House’s face as he considers what to do…he is ACTIVELY CARING ABOUT PEOPLE for a few seconds! I should compile these rare moments in a video tribute to The Softer Side of House. You could show it to your friends who only like watching nice people practice pleasantness on TV. It’d be a totally different show. Yeah, I won’t do that.

Hey, hair department: You have to do something about Cuddy’s mop. I’m going to dedicate an entire post to it every week until you do. I’m not going to make you take the stairs, trip you over a wire, or take away your cane, because that would be not only immature, but completely unrealistic as a plot point because who would do the hair if you died? But seriously. Those bangs. Get on it.

What did you think of last night’s 100th episode, House-bounds?

I was wondering why the TV Watch hadn’t been posted yet. I didn’t realize it was because y’all abandoned it!
    (I’m from Texas. I can say “y’all”)

  • AJ

So The Bachelor gets a TV Watch, but House gets booted because…it takes too long to write? No wonder the rumors are flying that EW is flailing.
With regards to the House ep… I’ve never been an avid Thirteen hater like so many seem to be, but I liked her a lot in this episode. I’m glad they didn’t dwell on the Foreman-cheating-on-the-drug-trial story line for more than two episodes.
Cuddy’s problems go way beyond her hair. I wish the writers would figure out what to do with her character. Something that doesn’t involve her mooning after House like a 13-year old girl.

  • fancypants

Is the ailing economy the reason why EW has probably cut employees and has thus gotten rid of the ‘House’, ‘30 Rock’, and ‘Ugly Betty’ TV Watches, among others? Why not reinstate these recaps and get rid of the recaps for Grey’s Anatomy, The Bachelor and Gossip Girl?

  • Miss Misery

So EW can take all the time in the world to recap trash like “Gossip Girl”, “The Bachelor” and “Survivor”, but not “House”? I can’t be the only going WTF is that all about???
What’s the matter, EW? Is it too hard to actually *think* while writing a recap? Does writing about characters with depth instead of teenyboppers and reality star attention whores take too much out of you?
No wonder this magazine has been circling the proverbial drain lately. Oh, and the recap was crap, focusing on Cuddy’s laptop and hair (like anyone gives a crap except the hack who wrote that POS). If that’s the best you can do, the do us all a favor and don’t bother all.

House can do no wrong in my eyes. I love this series. But I agree with u on Cuddy’s hair. Its gross. Too thick, too dark, too long!

  • Laura

I agree with the other posters — bring back the House re-caps. I don’t really watch reality tv beyond American Idol — House is one of the best shows on tv. Give it some props and a writer on it. Chop.Chop.

  • Laura

Annie, I really enjoyed your little review of House. I think you nailed it, especially the part about how 13 is begging to die, great characters like Wilson, Cameron, and Chase are wasted and/or not even in the show, and yeah, Cuddy’s bangs are horrible.
Well done. Since there are no more recaps for House, you should do these mini-reviews from now on – they are awesome.

  • J

I agree… How come the quality shows lose out? House is one of the best shows on TV.

  • Laura

Ha, two Laura’s posting within a minute of each other. Crazy. (I was the second one, BTW).

  • debbiedallas

I love House-even with it’s bazarre episodes. But what about Cuddy’s baby. Is something wrong with it or did I miss that episode.

  • suz

Wilson isn’t floppy-haired anymore. I thought they gave him a grownup haircut last night. A little gray at the temples. Rrrowwr! Maybe Cuddy should visit Wilson’s stylist.

  • Roon

“House” Was once one of my favorite must-watch shows. I still enjoy it, but it’s dangerously close to becoming the new “Law & Order” in the sense that IT’S ALWAYS ON TV SOMEWHERE ALL THE TIME!!!!

  • JT

I realize that the full TV watches bear costs in both time and money, but I would rather have these mini TV watches than nothing at all. If you can find the space for those inane Quote/Site of the day posts, then hopefully you can find space to mini-recap quality shows like House and 30 Rock.

  • Black Adder

“Those take hours to write in the middle of the night”….
    Boo hoo!!!
For a show that’s consistently in Top 10 most watched shows in any given week, this is a disgrace of an excuse.

  • Lisa

If you spent less time doing pointless videos with Ausiello, then you would have more time to do some real journalism (or at least what EW would call real journalism) and write satisfying TV Watches about shows that people actually watch.

  • pai

So strange that my fave shows keep losing recap status. Oh well, the writers of those weren’t good anyway! Haha. It’s much easier to contain this way. I toooooooooooooooootally agree about the Cuddy bangs. More of an issue than House and Cuddy bangin’.

  • kingofcities

Add me to the list of people WTF-ing about the lack of recaps. It takes time? That’s the excuse? Weak excuse. TVGuide.com manages to do it every week. I don’t see the problem.

  • Woody7

This is a poor excuse for a House recap. If you hate the show so much, then please don’t write about it. There wasn’t anything wrong with this episode- it was a natural progression of the story. It didn’t need to be monumental, just because it was the 100th. A normal episode of House is 100% better than the rest of the meaningless dribble on tv.

  • bostonbean

Popwatch post is better than no recap. But House is becoming pretty dull. Other than Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard, everyone else is just so boring. I fear this will go the way of Grey’s Anatomy for me….

  • Nicole

Yes! Cuddy’s hair is terrrrrible. Every time she comes onscreen I am horribly distracted from whatever is supposed to be the point of the scene.
And add me to the list of those who are much more interested in well-written and compelling recaps than a bajillion Popwatch links to funny things on other websites. I don’t come to EW.com just to click over to something else.

  • VW

I love House and it has become one of the 3 shows I watch each week…I have 3 since Burn Notice and The Closer are back. I refuse to watch the reality side shows…why recap them? It’s all the same.

  • Raven_Moon

So you know that the readers of your web site are disappointed about the lack of TV Watches for “House” & other great shows but you…don’t care? You’d rather recap reality trash? That makes sense. On to the matter at hand, though, I enjoyed last night’s episode. It’s always nice to see Wilson. I just wish there was more of him. You’re right about him being seriously underutilized, along with Cameron & Chase. Also, I don’t hate Thirteen like so many do, but maybe we could learn more about the other new docs, like Kutner, for example.

  • Nikki

EW couldn’t even be bothered to put in a little reminder of House’s 100th episode in their ‘Tonight’s Best TV’ lineup for Monday, and now they throw in a half-assed recap because it’s just oh-so-difficult to write. Niiiiice.

  • Me

    BORING EPISODE.
Bring Foreteen to an end and gives me Huddy back!!

  • Eye Roll

This episode was getting too close to becoming trash. Cuddy has lost it and is pretending Cameron quit because House made her because he wants Cuddy back so much so that she can hurt House to get his attention again, and Thirteen once again proves impossible to kill off or get rid of in anyway. She is the human cockroach. Cuddy’s hair is a nest.
Good mini-recap. This is all the attention this episode deserved.
Thank good Wilson finally showed up.

  • Kendra

I may just switch to TV guide. I will miss Idolatry, of course, but not writing a TV watch because it take too long!? Seriously!? Stop recapping Bachelor then. Is anyone even really watching that craptastic show??? I enjoyed the episode, personally, but I was kind of grossed out by POTW’s diagnosis. Period everywhere? That’s just nasty.

  • angelabeouf

oh man, thank you for commenting on Cuddy’s hair.
    It. is. awful.
If she still has that hair when she and House ‘get intimate’ I’m gonna be completely distracted.

  • Chloe

Sorry, Annie, but your “alleged” recap stunk. IF you don’t like House anymore – don’t watch it or try to “recap” the episodes in any way. I personally thought the episode was good and again, the connection between House and Cuddy is realistic for their two characters. I have to admit “13″ was an almost bearable character last night when she was lighthearted and smiling. So Annie – Quit Recapping a show you obviously don’t like.

  • Mandy

Speaking of Cuddy – I saw a rerun of “Frasier” last week and Lisa Edelstein was on it as a love interest for Frasier! She was so young looking and her hair was very long and frizzy. She played kind of a “hippie kind of chick”. GOod comedic timing.

  • laylagalise

I was underwhelmed by this ep. As always, all things Kutner = love. I adore Cuddy (and the thing between her and House) but you’re totally on the mark with the bangs and puffy hair. Bring back the curls! That hair cut is a travesty.
