Two's a trend: Mall-cop movies!

Filed under: Movies and tagged:

Mallcopsrogenjames_lThere’s a fascinating sort of hive mind that exists in Hollywood, which is essentially a giant monkeys-at-typewriters statistical exercise that sometimes spits out two nearly identical projects at the same time. But while I can understand the existence of two asteroid movies (1998′s Deep Impact and Armageddon), two Truman Capote movies (2005′s Capote and 2006′s Infamous), and even the ongoing Chinese Democracy-style journey of the two rumored Janis Joplin biopics to the screen, I find it amazing in a totally enjoyable way that for 2009, the greatest entertainment minds of our generation have dreamed and toiled and employed all of their considerable talents to generate…two mall-cop movies?

It was just announced that Observe and Report, the newest from funny Foot Fist Way writer/director Jody Hill, will premiere at the SXSW Film Fest this March. Starring Seth Rogen as "a deluded, self-important head of mall security who squares off in a turf war against the local cops," the film is a dark comedy, which is the most obvious way in which it will differ from this weekend’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop, the ultra-broad Kevin James vehicle directed by Steve Carr. (Funny story: Steve Carr used to do album art for Def Jam in the ’90s, which means the same dude who directed Daddy Day Care also designed the cover for, like, Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet.)

How to explain, PopWatchers? What’s so zeitgeisty about mall cops? Which one of these films are you more excited to see? And can you think of other memorable two-fers in movie history?

'American Idol' premiere: What did you think?

Filed under: American Idol and tagged:

Hello, Idol addicts! I feel like my innards are currently residing atop my epidermis. Sick? Yes. But I’m so psyched to be back on the American Idol train, writing about my very most favorite show (and its very good new judge, Kara DioGuardi) that it almost physically hurts. Okay, so tonight’s season premiere was a little short on future Kelly Clarksons, but I was definitely craving a second verse of Southern gal Deanna Brown’s rendition of "(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay" — she can go directly to the semifinals, without interacting with Ryan, and without collecting $200 — and it seemed like the producers have lost their fascination with playing "kick-the-emotionally-damaged-child-in-the-schoolyard." In other words, not the greatest audition episode of all time, but a promising start to season 8. Weigh in with your own thoughts below, then check back around 6 a.m. for my full TV Watch/episode recap (update: It’s live!). It’s been more than seven months since the last one, so you know I’m gonna be wordy!

Staff Web Pick of the Week:
Covers of MGMT’s (pictured, above right) "Electric Feel"
First Katy Perry gave the electro-psych number her own smoothed-out spin last fall. Then Solange Knowles started working it into a medley in her concerts. Most recently, Atlantan hip-hop troupe Holly Weerd found a way to take this already-funky song even farther out into space — a feat we once would have thought impossible. Where will it end?!

Coconut Records for hipsters and non-hipsters alike!

Tagged:

Davycoconutrecords_l_2 The ingenious Jason Schwartzman does it again: Davy, the sophomore album from Schwartzman’s one-man indie-pop band Coconut Records, pre-released today on Amie Street. I’ve been a fan of Schwartzman’s acting for a decade and a fan of Coconut Records’ simple, poppy lyrics since I discovered his first album, Nighttiming, from 2007. I am so ready for some new tunes by Jason, not to mention his next appearance in a new Wes Anderson project.

The songs that resonate most for me off Davy are "Microphone," "Saint Jerome," "Wandering Around," and "I am Young." What doesn’t resonate with me? The album cover. It looks like someone doodled over an adult contemporary album.

Anyone else out there enjoying Schwartzman’s music? Couldn’t he have done something more with the cover art, though?

50 Cent is getting desperate

Kanye50centwayne_l::Sniff:: Do you guys smell something? Ah, yes, it’s the delicate scent of desperation, wafting from the general direction of 50 Cent’s mansion. Lean in a little closer to some of 50′s most recent interviews and you’ll find that odor billowing at you in great gusts. Case in point: 50 called Eminem’s Sirius XM channel this weekend to promote his repeatedly-delayed upcoming album Before I Self-Destruct – by lobbing some hateful trash at current arch-enemies Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Click here for an NSFW summary of his commentary, if you must. Lovely stuff.

But hey, what other options does this guy have? 50′s last album, 2007′s Curtis, was his worst-selling record to-date. His MTV reality show was quietly canceled. Even the car he was developing with Pontiac is dead! When you pin your entire public image on your vast sales power the way 50 did in 2003-05, blaming the economy doesn’t quite cut it. And as the Roots’ ?uestlove pointed out in a recent message-board entry — he’s the guy posting as "15" — 50 might have maxed out in artistic terms, too. Wrote ?uest: "there is simply NO coming back from the term ‘i’ll kill you.’ its like…what is more gangsta than ‘i’ll kill you!’…it solidifies your status….but unfortunately you raise the bar sohigh that you can start counting down the minutes from there." Put that all together and it’s no wonder he’s trying to get attention however he can.

The shame of it all is, some of the new music that’s leaked from 50′s studio sessions lately hasn’t been half bad. 50 Cent is a legitimate talent who’s made some great music over the years. And he has true star quality when he wants to. I’ve met him twice, and he’s come across as a smart, engaging, witty operator both times. But I guess that’s not the face he wants to show the public, especially not when his commercial future is in doubt. So the question is, after a few years watching him stick to this same holding pattern of beef, drama, and more beef, how much longer will you even be paying attention to 50 Cent’s antics?

Site of the Day: TinEye

Tagged:

Ghandistamps_lUpload a photo file or link into TinEye, and the self-described Google of images searches the Web for other iterations of that image, whether they be Photoshopped, re-sized, or in the case of Gandhi, Yoda-ized. Not only is TinEye a handy way to find a higher resolution image, but I suspect it will have some application in tracking the whereabouts of more than a few drunken New Year’s Eve photos.

Ray Romano (but more importantly, Scott Bakula) returns to TV!

Filed under: Television and tagged: , ,

Rayromanoscottbakula_lTNT has picked up 10 episodes of Ray Romano‘s "midlife crisis drama" Men of a Certain Age. While I’m excited to see Ray back on TV — if you’re not an Everybody Loves Raymond fan, it’s because you never saw it — I’m even more psyched for a weekly dose of Scott Bakula, who’ll costar with Romano and Andre Braugher as aging college buddies.

I’ve always been honest about my love for Bakula (pictured, near left), whether I was searching for that clip of him seducing Candice Bergen on Murphy Brown last year (watch it below), or chatting with Star Trek: Enterprise exec producer Brannon Braga about what would become their final season in 2004:

Me: I just watched the last three episodes of season 3, so hopefully I’ll sound somewhat intelligent as we talk about season 4.
Braga: You’re not a Star Trek fan, are you?
Me: I’m not. But I tried to be prepared, and I enjoyed the shot of Scott Bakula shirtless very much.
Braga: We always try to get that in there. Look, the guy’s got a great body, and we definitely get him topless as much as we can. But it was not a conscious effort in the last three episodes.

Who else loves Scott Bakula? (And which episodes of Enterprise do I need to be watching? You know the kind I’d like…)

Absence makes my Must List grow longer: Share your Musts -- now!

Onetreehill_lYou know the saying, ”Absence makes the heart grow fonder”? Well for me that isn’t quite true. It’s more like ”Absence makes the heart forget you even existed.” And I’d like to take a minute to apologize to One Tree Hill, which tops my Must List this week, for forgetting its existence. It’s not my fault that in its month-and-a-half-long hiatus I began watching inferior shows and forgot that it returned last week. But I remembered last night, and I promise to never ever make that mistake again, because One Tree Hill is SO freakin’ awesome. I only missed one episode, but about a thousand things happened: someone’s pregnant, someone’s a murderer, someone’s homeless, someone’s no longer a virgin, and Stephen from Laguna Beach is back as a guest star. What?

Okay! It’s like the most ridiculous soap opera, but instead of spreading out the drama over weeks and weeks, they pack it all into a one-hour episode. That, my friends, is why One Tree Hill is back on my Must List, hopefully never to leave again.

What’s on your Must List this week, PopWatchers? List up to three items from current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. Don’t forget your e-mail address, in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. ET.

Clip du Jour: Dear 'Gossip Girl'

I’m too lazy to tally up all the Gossip Girl references in Southern Mothers’ nearly six-minute opus to the Upper East Side’s most infamous blogger, but suffice it to say, it likely rates with the number of headbands in Blair’s vanity. If you’re pressed for time, skip to the 3:05 mark where the name-dropping reaches its frenetic climax. I recommend pairing this video with a small original Pinkberry with strawberries. (My favorite! Yum!)
