'Lost' theory debunked: Richard Alpert NOT into eyeliner

Richardalpert_l Lost’s Nestor Carbonell told Sci-Fi Wire he understands why everyone thinks he’s into "guyliner," but that it’s simply a myth. "I could see why some people would thinkI have eyeliner on because [my eyelashes] are dark. Especially thebottom row, they’re pretty dark. I’ve been dealing with it since I wasa little kid, and so to me it’s very funny when it comes up," explained Carbonell while batting his lashes without even meaning to. "My brother told me to look online and sort of Google somethingabout that, and my name came up as a couple things. One of them wasMaybelline Man. I’ve been dubbed by some people as Guyliner. It’s veryamusing."

Certainly. And so is a Lostpedia forum  I just found, entitled "The importance of Alpert’s eyeliner" — which contains this speculative gem: "Aside from the theory that Richard Alpert is a vain metrosexual stuckon a permanent vacation, I think that Alpert’s eyeliner relates to hisimmortality…like a pharoah or something…I’ve been researching allday, but can’t find a conclusive connection to the ancient world, immortality and the wearing of eyeliner."

Thanks to Carbonell’s brave speaking out on this important topic, we can stop all this wondering/researching and instead just be insanely jealous of the actor’s natural gifts. So, moving on: What is the connection between Richard Alpert’s occasional shadow-produced "smoky eye" (pictured) and Smokey the monster? WHOA.

Dude! I’m glad I’m not the only person who noticed this. It drives me nuts in Lost, and it drove me nuts in The Dark Knight.
I just assumed he was Pete Wentz’s dad or something.

I always thought that Scott Patterson (Luke on Gilmore Girls) looked like he was wearing eye liner. Let’s hope the answer is the same.

  • Cynthia

LOL. My personal nickname for him is Eyeliner Guy. I use it so much, half the time I forget his character’s name.

You know, I think eyeliner was actually created so that we could all look like Nestor Carbonell (at least in the eyelashes department). I mean, the idea had to come from SOMEWHERE, right?

  • Miss B

Adrian Pasdar has the same thing going on, by the way. Personally, I like the I-look-like-I’m-wearing-guyliner-but-my-eyelashes-are-really-just-that-thick look. ;-)

TMB: Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls/Saw IV and V) definitely does NOT wear eyeliner. He just has long, gorgeous eyelashes and mesmerizing eyes. *sigh* He needs to be back on television!

My Dad, brothers and I all have these types of eyes. They run strong in some families are normal. Get over it people.

I’m sure being incredibly gorgeous is a great comfort for Nestor Carbonell against the scurrilous attacks :)

This explanation is not reassuring. Reason? This means that:
    1. Nestor has SO MANY INDIVIDUAL STRANDS OF EYELASH that they’ve become crowded enough to deny the viewer a glimpse of eyelid skin.
    2. Nestor’s eyelashes are SO THICK that they’re about double the girth of the common folk’s follicle.
How is this a better situation?!

Look, dude’s just probably glad he’s not doing the upteenth season of “Suddenly Susan,” although in that show’s defense, it did give us Kathy Griffin (put a sock in it team Kathy haters–Kathy and Andy in 2012!).

Why are people obsessing over this? It’s ridiculous. I want to know why his character seems to be ageless on Lost. That’s far more interesting.

  • Cara

I am so attracted to that man, it’s ridiculous. I mean, seriously. Good Lord. He is beautiful.
Apartment nickname for Carbonell: Vampire Richard.

  • Shasta

For real, this dude has been on every show on network tv for the past decade and a half. How have people not seen him before? People didn’t seriously think he was wearing special eye make-up just for “Lost,” did they? Anyway, dude is hot. That island is full of gorgeous men. Reow!

I think the real news story here — and it’s not exactly news — is Nestor Carbonell Is Genetically Blessed.
