'American Idol' in Salt Lake City: Better, no?

I’ve done a lot of whining, moaning, and complaining about the lackluster talent being sent through to Hollywood on season 8 of American Idol, and Read the full post.

The divorcee was the best last night…

The clean scrubbed, beehive-less Wino was made of win. And the AI contestants are bringing it with the cute babies. I couldn’t even focus on Rose Flack at the end (Although I agreed with Paula – what? – that her voice left a little something to be desired. Maybe a tad bit thin?) I was so annoyed by her whole sob story. Ok, your parents died when you were young. Sad for you. That does not give you the right to run around with bird’s nest hair and filthy feet (ewwww). She really needs to tighten it up. None of the guys even registered, save Jarret Burns who surprised with a sweet voice and an unexpected rendition of that Corinne Bailey Ray song. Michael Slezak, is it too early to add that to the list of songs that should never be sung again on Idol?
Hollywood week!!! Eeeeeee. It’s so close now I can taste it.

Enjoyed this episode. Some interesting personalities, a few promising vocals. Fewer Whitney wannabees. Did you notice that Kara donned a much more modest shirt tonight – perhaps some cultural sensitivity for the conservative state of Utah? I noticed because the last two episodes Kara and her girls were on full display, and this time not so much…

Finally! Exactly what I have been waiting for. Megan, Rose and Frankie were great. I started crying during the story of the Osmond kid…so sad to hear about his dad. He was good too…people will say he is a plant…but I understand where he was coming from. His whole life he has been part of a group…from the time he was 4. Maybe he never thought he was good enough to be a solo singer…then once he had MS he realized he felt his one chance to shine was over. This is his chance to be a star. I think he has a good voice. Plus…he is a “fricking Osmond!!” I used to have a Donny Osmond poster when I was 12 and I watched the Donny and Marie Show!! Donny has a glorious voice. He did a fantastic job as Joseph in the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on Broadway. All the Osmonds are good looking, talented, nice, clean cut people. Don’t be haters, America!!

Megan is talented, cute and marketable. Rose has that “it factor” but could help it out by combing out her hair and soaking her feet. The shot of her dirty feet skeeved me out. I thought the judges were awfully hard on David Osmond — he sang beautifully, what was with the third degree? He took it well and thankfully is going to Hollywood week (b/c if Bikini Girl got through, *anyone* should get through). I also liked Frankie and Austin (class president — I could see him with his very own crying girl).

I thought David Osmond was an excellent singer. I was kind of surprised the judges made such an issue about his song choice. I guess they felt they had to find something to be critial about, so it would look like David was getting a free pass. I still don’t understand why he is doing Idol. He already has had a somewhat successful performing career, if not a recording career.

  • Peggy

Oops, I meant to say NOT give him a free pass.

I can’t listen to that Megan for much longer…all cracky and weird. No thanks.

THE BEST PART WAS KELLY CLARKSONS VIDEO CLIP…..
NOW THATS WHAT AN AMERICAN IDOL IS!!!

Gotta say that I was really suprised by the judges love for Megan, who’s rendition of a classic jazz song had absolutely zero soul and only marginal originality to it. Different is not always good. She’s gonna have lots of trouble when different singing styles are called for.

David Osmond is doing Idol because the Osmonds are reality TV ho’s. no thanks.

Hollywood week has always been the most interesting (not “best”) part of the show. This is when the judges get to see everyone side by side. I just wished they would skip the manufactured drama for the actual drama inherent in the process.

Meghan Corkery reminded me of pop-version of Madeleine Peyroux, who reminds me of a someone trying to be a white Billie Holiday. In other words, imho, meh.
Honestly, I don’t know how y’all remember names, as everyone has seemed to be kinda generic, like a version of someone we already know. I can’t believe that we have seen roughly half of everyone going to Hollywood, and there are no Rachel Zevita’s in the bunch, someone really truly unique (who can sing too). I *think* I am rooting for the blind guy, the orphan, and the “Natty” babe.

I’m glad I’ve got DVR…saves so much time with the editing. So much drivel, when they passed something like 18 in SLC? We saw, what, 4/5 that passed? Rock on DVR!
