'American Idol' in Salt Lake City: Better, no?

Filed under: American Idol and tagged:

I’ve done a lot of whining, moaning, and complaining about the lackluster talent being sent through to Hollywood on season 8 of American Idol, and while tonight’s Salt Lake City auditions featured didn’t exactly stray from that formula, I’ll say this much: I agreed with Simon’s assessment that a couple of contestants (hello, Megan Corkrey!) met the hard-to-define requirement of being memorable. So my question to you guys is this: After tonight’s show, are you more optimistic about Hollywood Week? (Me? I’m always optimistic about Hollywood Week, and especially so this year, since it’ll span a whopping four episodes.) And on that note, I’m off to write my full TV Watch recap, which will post around 6 a.m. tomorrow. Until then, press play on our latest Idolatry installments below, then get buckwild in the comments section!

A much better episode tonight, especially for the women. 3-4 very strong female contenders in the 2nd half of the show.

  • Meghan

I completely agree! There were a lot of possible contenders tonight. Even the weaker auditions (like Rose at the end) had that it factor you look for in an Idol. I am worried that Megan will find it hard to adapt her style of singing to some of the more challenging theme weeks–provided she makes it through.

Frankie Jordan already had a record deal and has a song on the Win A Date With Tad Hamiltion soundtrack.

loved this episode … Reinvigorated my hopes for season 8!

Slezak, are you gonna mention Ms. Kelly Clarkson’s new video for “My Life Would Suck Without You”?????? Not to mention the HUGE historic jump it made! LOVE YOU KELLY!! THE ONE & ONLY, ORIGINAL AMERICAN IDOL!!!!!!

  • No to Chris Sligh

Ok, about the Melinda performance video – she’s awesome, but I wish they had placed her in a spot where u can’t see workers WALKING AROUND in the background. LOL…

I’m totally torn between Rose Flack and Emily Hughes now. I definitely got goosebumps during Rose Flack’s audition. She’s special.

This was the best produced show this season. The annoying beggers were absent. the tantrums were kept to a montage. It’s time the producers bred a better contestant by eliminating the beggers, the overdrawn crappy auditions.
I really enjoyed the “Everyone in SLC is happy” montage. It’s good to see people taking the criticism with dignity. Sure it’s okay for them to cry, but i don’t need to see these people get chased paparazzi style as they deal with shattered dreams.

Paula’s turtleneck in tonight’s show vaguely reminded me of a printed turtleneck sweater I had in 1995. I was 11.

I loved Rose’s audition despite her annoying me (b/c I’m heartless okay?). But she had a beautiful voice and great style and she’s gorgeous under those effing dreds. And they actually let her finish! So what was up with Paula saying ‘you need to work on the vocals’. And I was just starting to think that maybe Paula was laying off the pills. Rose is absolutely my favorite voice so far.

Finally! loved Rose, Megan, and Frankie (aka crackless Winehouse).
verrrry happy we only have one more audition ep before Hollywood week.
I have to wonder though about the comments that have come from the judges pre-season about this season being about “the guys”. So far it’s been the girls that have impressed me.
yes, I am starting to think there may be life in this season afterall…

I loved that the judges – especially Simon – couldn’t believe that people in SLC were happy and could accept a rejection with grace and a smile.
Learning that David Osmond has MS like his father was very sad. I had a friend who died from it, and it’s a long and painful road ’till the end. I truly liked his voice, and I hope he takes their advice and works hard to learn songs by solo artists. I’d love to see him in the finals.
I also agree that the women did very well here. Let’s see what happened on the auditions that will be shown tomorrow. I hope they were good!

I’ve always hated Hollywood week. So much exaggerated drama and so little singing. And absolutely no one can explain to me why a group performance round is neccesary for a solo singer talent search. Too many good people go home because of their poor “group dynamic.” Wake up, Idol producers! You don’t need a good “group dynamic” to be the next Kelly, Carrie, or Cook. You need to be able to stand alone. Witness this week’s criticism from Paula (surprisingly lucid tonight Ms. A!) that the hideous Osmond heir apparent sounded like he was “too much of a group singer.” Ummm….if that’s a bad thing why encourage it in Hollywood? Potential for drama shouldn’t outweigh talent, but Idol doesn’t seem to care.

  • Kaylie

So many people in Utah did not deserve to get through! There were at least 4. They were OK singers but their voices just weren’t strong enough. It make sense that in the preview for Hollywood week, some of the people I was talking about were seen balling their eyes out.
