TNT's 'Trust Me': Are you sold?

Trustme_lIt’s safe to say that EW TV critic Ken Tucker isn’t buying what TNT is selling in its latest drama, Trust Me. "Will & Grace’s Eric McCormack and Ed’s TomCavanagh individually seem like nice fellows, but together, aswisecracking admen, they are well-nigh insufferable," he writes. "As smart-aleckpartners, art director McCormack and copywriter Cavanagh make everyoneelse look like square saps. They squabble with sitcom-style jokes — ‘I’ve been carrying you so long, I have scoliosis’ — but this is anhour-long drama trying to cross Mad Men with Aaron Sorkin-style walk-and-talk dialogue. It’s a clever concept that curdles with cutesy self-consciousness. C+"

What about you? I’ve decided to put it on layaway, meaning I’ll DVR it each week but reserve the right to fast-forward. I like Cavanagh’s and McCormack’s chemistry, and I’m already anticipating the sexual tension between Conner (Cavanagh) and fellow wordsmith Sarah (Monica Potter) — both characters will hate themselves for feeling it, which will be fun. I do, however, sorta wish that guest star Jason O’Mara (star of ABC’s Life on Mars) could’ve stuck around for another episode or two as high-strung, sharp-tongued creative director Stu. Stu had to die — of a heart attack at 43 — if the show wants to focus on what happens when dependable family man Mason (McCormack) becomes the boss of his temperamental single partner, Conner. But he definitely wasn’t a sap. This show does need a mad man.

I liked the show. Not the best thing I’ve ever seen, but the characters were fairly introduced and relationships established in the pilot. I’ll give it a couple episodes before I make a decision as to whether to stick with it or let it go…

I’m sold-ish. Frankly, they had me at “Tom Cavanagh,” who I adored on Ed and who apparently got smokin’ while I wasn’t looking. And I bailed on Love Monkey, so I owe him. But I agree that the cutesiness will probably become grating really quickly.

I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the pilot episode. It was interesting and funny. I think that Cavanaugh and McCormack have a good chemistry. Tom Cavanaugh steals the show (as usual) and I so enjoy watching him. I’m interested to see what happens next week.

I’m willing to see where it goes… I had more fun going, “ooo – there’s Samantha’s door man!” or “ooo – its that hot guy from the one show, why did he have to die?”
I like Tom and I like Will, so I’ll keep on watching, but its not must see, my week-is-ruined, if I miss it – so far.

I love both of the stars. When I heard they were in it I wanted to watch it right away. But last night’s show wasn’t all that good. I’ve decided to give it a second episode. Hopefully it will get better, otherwise I’m done.

I liked it. I thought it was fun and well written and like most TNT shows, will only improve with time. I just hope the network gives it a chance to get there.

Love the leads, but Tucker’s right, the writing has to get a lot better. Right now, it’s okay–but okay won’t build an audience. And Griffin Dunne–wow, he looks better today than he did ten years ago.

Cavanagh is the only reason i’m sticking with this show. McCommick was just annoying the entire hour.

  • ks

Not bad- They did introduce everyone and establish roles and relationships. I will be watching it again next week

Cavanagh IS ALL THAT MATTERS … for me ;o)

  • ADL

I’ll give it a few more episodes to build up interest in the characters.
Still not great, but beats the s— out of an new network shows.

This show sucks. It is “Will & Grace,” only the 2 characters are straight guys. McCormack is playing Will (again), and Cavanaugh is playing the high-wire, jittery Grace (as a man). If the show makes it, they need to thank “The Closer” big time.

  • Anna

Disappointing first show but I hope the writing improves. Love both of the guys but found them both annoying on this debut. Sarah is a dog. What’s with that hair?

  • Matt

Eric McCormack has exactly one style of acting. He’ll be a variation on Will until the day he dies. (And what’s keeping Tom Cavanaugh famous??!?)

  • Peter

This show absolutely sucked. I don’t understand why they can’t accurately depict and agency. What was up with the “memo”. What is this, 1972? And where was the ECD? They went from GCD right up to the owner of the company. What’s up with that. And what was the deal with all the Clio’s? Seemed like everyone had at least 5. Completely bored.
