Mike White is on 'The Amazing Race'! Look how jazzed he is

Categories: Television

Mikegayamazingrace_lIt’s not like I need any extra convincing to watch The Amazing Race, a.k.a. Why The Rest of the World Hates America, Plus: Gross Food! every season. But the casting of writer-director Mike White (pictured, right, totally jazzed) and his gay rights activist dad has me more pumped than ever. Mike, who wrote School of Rock and Nacho Libre and directed 2007’s Year of the Dog, assures us that unlike some of the other teams, he and pops "got along like a Hallmark card." Boy better be talkin’ ’bout Shoebox!

This Mike White announcement got me thinking. (I know, shocking. Brace yourselves.) If The Amazing Race had a cast of all Hollywood insider-y types, would Larry David not be THE BEST contestant in history? I spent the better part of our Monday meeting daydreaming about how many repetitions of the word "pret-ty…" Larry could get out before a stoic, thick-necked Trans-Siberian Railroad conductor would hurl him down the hatch and into the tundra. I guess real person Larry David wouldn’t be as obnoxious as character Larry David, but still. (He could be partnered with Susie Essman!)

Check out all the Race teams here. Who would be on your dream Amazing Race cast? And are you psyched for season 14?

    Chuck and Buck FTW!

As an aspiring screenwriter and reality TV addict, I’m actually pretty thrilled with this news even though I generally hate “mactors” going on this show and Survivor. This is pretty much the ultimate solidification of reality TV being legitimate in the eyes of the creative types in Hollywood. Now I’m not quite as worried that applying for Survivor will blackball me from my dream job.

Brilliant! I’m officially excited for the season. Never been excited for a casting decision before.

  • Liz

I’m glad about this! Maybe they might have celebrity tag-alongs like Jack Black suddenly pop up along the race. I’m just saying.

The look on Mike’s face in that photo alone makes me even more excited to watch a show I already love. Yay!

Anybody know if this season of AR will be in HD?

  • mmendes

Yeah!! For those not familiar with Mike White go and rent Chuck and Buck. One of the best indies of all time!!

  • bruno

yes!…i think….i dunno. i’ve always pegged mike white for an obscure odd one, not a racer. prove me wrong buck! prove me wrong!! (wait…or were you chuck???) . but i don’t think we need to go pushing the envelope for a celebrity amazing race. although i’m sure it wouldn’t reek as much as the apprentice i’m scared the power would go to phil’s head and the buzz cut would be grown out to a rad combover…

In terms of dream racers, I think that a pair of business rivals who would have to be on a team would be interesting. Not that this would ever happen for a number of reasons (including his health) but Steve Jobs and Bill Gates…racing together for charity. They are two incredibly smart guys, but could they collaborate together?

Another of the racers, Jennifer Hopka, is a former nude model and was a contender for the 50th anniversary Playboy Playmate. Just figured I would throw that out there. lol

who wrote these stupid CBS bios, a third-grader? Their proud moms? Sheesh. The Whites are going to make this worth watching; hope they can hang in there for a few weeks at least. But more important: Josh, PLEASE say you’ll be writing the recaps?

  • DL

I met Mike years ago at an advance screening of School of Rock- he is an incredibly nice and funny guy. Should be a great addition to the show.
Next year? Kyle Gas and Jack Black- MAKE IT HAPPEN CBS

  • Richard

I’m ok with Mike being on the show because he’s not that recognizable. I don’t think celebrities should be on the show because its unfair to the other teams. When Amber and Rob from Survivor was on, people recognized them and helped them.

  • Jen

I’m stoked for this – not because I’m a big fan of Mike’s (although I am), but because his personality is verrrry low-key. It’ll be interesting to see how he adapts to the insane Race environment.
Also, I’m with DL – Jack Black and Kyle Gass would ROCK the Race. As long as there’s not much running involved.

  • To MsDaisy

This season of AR was shot in SD.

Mike’s “gay rights activist dad” has a name, Mel White. He has quite an interesting history, used to “ghost write” books and sermons for the religous right before coming out.
Oh, and Mike himself is bisexual.

  • nykolus

i have no idea who he is, so it matters not to me.

I like Mike and Mel, The mom and son and the flight attendants. I’m so sick of dating couples on this show. I’d like people to audtion, get selected and then, in a Survivor like twist, be forced to switch partners for the length of the race. All that “teamwork” and “strategizing” just became “Hell, If I win I’ll get half a million no matter who I came with”. And, if there were a celebrity Amazing Race, I would not have them travel around the world but have them just do US states and territories. I don’t know why, but seeing as how so many “celebs” get the free red carpet ride in so many places, it would be interesting to see them interacting in less well known places in the US. Also, it could be service to promote tourism at home in incredibly difficult economic times.

Mary-Kate and Ashley would totes rule the competition if they were contestants. Can you imagine? A detour comes their way, and they have two choices: a yoga-off with an genuine Indian Yogini, or a whole-wheat bagel toasting challenge! Can Ash double toast to perfection? Why do I even ask? OF COURSE.

Watched the contestant videos — first impression favorite teams: Margaret & Luke, Mike & Mel (both cracked me up equally) and Tammy & Victor (although they’re probably going to be the big argument team).

  • Jennifer Hopka fan

All I have to say is Google “Jennifer Hopka” and the first result is illuminating.

Can’t figure out from their bios which ones are going to be this season’s psycho-whackjobs. Any guesses?
