The Miss America pageant is just making matters worse for women in our society. It is putting the wrong message out, that if you want to be what is conseidered "beautiful" you have to be tall, skinny, and look well in fancy gowns and too small of swim suits!

As a former contestant, I sadly have to agree with this article. The program really is outdated. I even received scholarship money (so I'd be the one to defend it right?) Well, call me whatever you may... the program simply isn't modernizing the way it should. I'm at competition age and really felt inclined to compete this year because - like so many of my friends with pageant histories - it becomes almost a culture onto its own - a family of the same pageant addicted girls. But there comes a time when we have to say enough is enough. Women really have made progress in society and should not be backtracking by wearing swimsuits and smiles to win their scholarship money. There are conventional and respectable ways to get through college.

The main problem with Miss America is that it is BORING! I love pageants but these girls are far from stunning. Way too much make up and big hair. They look a decade older than they are and the clothes are completely out of date.

The talent competition should really be done away with, as shoud all of the talk about scholarships. I mean, who cares! Scholarships from a beauty contest?

If they want to get ratings back, they should choose physically beautiful state winners and conduct the entire pageant with the contestants wearing swimsuits. Also, they should choose winners who are actually beautiful instead of 'cute girl next door' types.

Finally, they shouldn't be ashamed to call it a beauty pageant. That is what it is. The public wants to see a beauty contest, scholarship programs are run by colleges and nobody tunes in to see them.

Who is Rush Limbaugh to judge in a Miss America pageant.....guess woman from New England can kiss their hopes of making it "good bye"! Its like getting a Republican to get up and crap for President Obama! Can turn the TV off at 8:25 PM...save the electricity. SOS!

I think the pageant has regressed from the days when it was revered as THE premiere pageant - the one that focused on talent and scholarship. I agree that it should attempt to keep up with today's style and I applaude TLC for keeping it going. However, it would be so nice to get away from the Miss USA - styled cheese and TV-rating sluttiness and get back to the beauty and pageantry of what Miss America stands for- which, to me, should be the All-Amecian Woman. This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage young women to become involved in their communities and better themselves. I so GO GIRLS!

I have personally been in beauty contests for my whole life,it has taught me more than you could ever imagine. It has taught me life rules and given me some of my best friends. Those who criticize the contest are just plain rude, because i hate sports but if that is what your good at then by all means, do it!and try your hardest.Women who do beauty contests are brave and honorable,i dont see any of you raising money for the children's mirical network.I have never won money or scholarships from the contests that i do,but i do it to make myself a better person. Not to mention, the swim suit competition is to promote healthy bodies,i would rather be in a bathing suit infront of people looking great, than obese in sweat pants. No average student is accepted either. You must be very smart to win these contests.Any person who has the nerve to demean these women for being fit, smart, kind, giving, driven, beautiful, and well rounded is just mad they can not be this perfect.

I like watching the pageants .It might not be for everyone but I think they are fun to watch . I think it's pretty sad that almost every girly sport is criticized ....like pageants ,cheer ,& dance . I think the people who mock and make fun of pageants and other sports should just keep their opinions to themselves . Yes I agree that some pageant contestants go too far with the dark make up , tans, and fake teeth (normally the children) but thats the individuals fault not the sport itself . Just like some football player get shots of staroids and some weight lifters do the same ..it's kind of the same thing as what people critisize pageant about ... not exactly but in a way . But for some reason it all boils down to it being a girl thing virses a man's sport ! Kind of frustrating but it probably wont change so what can you do ?

I LOVE the Miss America pageant and have met many who've competed. And might i say that those who i HAVE met are some of the most beautiful young ladies i have ever met. Inside and out. I think we just need to open our eyes and realize that theres a lot more to it than i seems.....
