I have personally been in beauty contests for my whole life,it has taught me more than you could ever imagine. It has taught me life rules and given me some of my best friends. Those who criticize the contest are just plain rude, because i hate sports but if that is what your good at then by all means, do it!and try your hardest.Women who do beauty contests are brave and honorable,i dont see any of you raising money for the children's mirical network.I have never won money or scholarships from the contests that i do,but i do it to make myself a better person. Not to mention, the swim suit competition is to promote healthy bodies,i would rather be in a bathing suit infront of people looking great, than obese in sweat pants. No average student is accepted either. You must be very smart to win these contests.Any person who has the nerve to demean these women for being fit, smart, kind, giving, driven, beautiful, and well rounded is just mad they can not be this perfect.

I like watching the pageants .It might not be for everyone but I think they are fun to watch . I think it's pretty sad that almost every girly sport is criticized ....like pageants ,cheer ,& dance . I think the people who mock and make fun of pageants and other sports should just keep their opinions to themselves . Yes I agree that some pageant contestants go too far with the dark make up , tans, and fake teeth (normally the children) but thats the individuals fault not the sport itself . Just like some football player get shots of staroids and some weight lifters do the same ..it's kind of the same thing as what people critisize pageant about ... not exactly but in a way . But for some reason it all boils down to it being a girl thing virses a man's sport ! Kind of frustrating but it probably wont change so what can you do ?

I LOVE the Miss America pageant and have met many who've competed. And might i say that those who i HAVE met are some of the most beautiful young ladies i have ever met. Inside and out. I think we just need to open our eyes and realize that theres a lot more to it than i seems.....

I think this pageant is seriously outdated. You hear so much about valuing people for who they are and what they do with their lives, then we go right back to the '50s with this silly thing. It IS a beauty pageant, no matter what they say. I didn't see any fat ugly girls up there!

There are plenty of blind scholarship pageants out there. in fact most scholarships dont factor looks in at all. so why does it matter that ONE out of a million scholarships in the US actually take poise and presentation into account?
And again there IS an even playing field. I have seen some physically hideous girls transform themselves into swans (without plastic surgery) and win local and state titles. Like any skill beauty can be worked on and perfected. Miss america is not about who is the most naturally beautiful. I mean if it was we would see wayyy prettier women in the national competition.
Whats next, are you going to say athletic scholarships arent fair because everyone is not athletic? what about music scholarships? oh lets not forget that everyone is not born with a high IQ so lets bash all scholarships for not having an even playing field. what about need based scholarships! that is like so unfair to people who didnt grow up poor! scholarships for disabled people? come on

and doesnt require you to wear a swimsuit. I agree that this is not really a scholarship pageant, its a beauty pageant, but the beauty part is more about being able to do the best that you can with what god gave you rather than having natural supermodel looks.

Again, its not just one thing. Its not about simply being informed, but being the entire package. I listed several requirements and you chose to go with one as if thats the one thing i said you need to win. its not. You need to be poised, well spoken, healthy/athletic, and well groomed. You need to be friendly and active in volunteer work. It also helps if your talent doesnt suck. Yes having a cleft like would get in the way of you looking well groomed. but who knows, maybe if a girl with a cleft lip enters she will win. its just never happened before. Remember the Miss Iowa or whatever that had cerebral palsy? she couldnt even walk and she made it to the top 10 at miss usa, and that was Miss USA which is far more shallow than miss america. As far as faking it, a ton of people fake things in life, in fact the most successful people in the world are the best liars. It makes me upset too but its the truth. As for another scholarship---any full ride scholarship pays more than miss america

To continue (I ran out of characters): I like the way they don't go down to a final five. Way, way, way back, the runner's up and Miss America were selected directly from the top 10. Now they go down and only 3 remain, one of whom is going to be Miss America. I think it's more suspenseful when you don't automatically know who is going to be crowned the second they announce first runner up. Everything seemed really rushed this year, which is what led to most of Mario's bad ad-libbing. I don't think the judges did anything on Saturday night. I think it was all determined during the prelims. Saturday was just there for show not competition.
