Ryan from 'The Real World': Time for the Jason Mraz wannabe to lose the guitar

Categories: Television

The Real World: Brooklyn is three episodes in, and for the most part, I’d say it is a pretty good season. A transsexual, a cute gay, and a beefcake whose abs could crack my skull? Um, yes please on all three counts.

I’m probably going to take a lot of crap for saying this, but there is one major thing that annoys me so far this season: Ryan and his heinous attempt at a singing career. His vocals are alone are atrosh—they’re tired, way too whiny and forced, and—surprise!—extremely douchebaggy. And: He needs to lose the stocking cap he’s been wearing while playing around the apartment.

Now I know I’m probably not supposed to say all this because he was in the military and went to the Middle East and all. But does that give a person a free pass to sing awfully on TV? Seriously, if I could, I’d kiss that record producer that basically told him to go away in the last episode. He probably did more good for Ryan because—finally!—someone told him the truth. His roommates certainly weren’t going to.

PopWatchers, I found a pseudo-tribute video (huh?!?) to him on YouTube. (No stocking cap in the video, but a totally awesome and expertly frayed baseball cap instead!) Take a look at it below and then let me know: Do you agree with me? Or are you swooning over the Jason Mraz wannabe? How do you feel about the line "My grip is tight / on the weapon that I hold" from his song? (I hate it.) Let loose in the comments!

Ahhh he’s been one of my favorites so far. I like this season but yeah I could do without some of his singing for a little while

If he thinks wearing a cap of any kind, picking up a guitar, and attempting to sing would even remotely remind anyone of Jason Mraz, he better get a different promoter or agent.
I have been to two Jason Mraz concerts and he is such a diverse and talented individual, with an excellent band to showcase his talent. If all you ever hear from Jason is from the radio, you are missing so much more that he has to offer.
BTW, Jason Mraz is the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this Saturday January 31st.

I think what annoys me more is your use of the term “tranny”. Does Christian Siriano work for EW?

Agree, not swooning, hate it too

  • chris

the cute gay guy and the beefcake are the only reasons that i’m watching this season. the closeted mormon just might be the reason i stop watching before the season ends

  • PJ

How dare this kid not live his life the way you desire Tanner. The audacity of some people.

  • Erin

I’m not even watching the season, but I did catch the episode when I was channel surfing a couple nights ago, and I was “treated” to Ryan’s performances. I don’t mind if he likes to sing and play- everyone needs a hobby. I just wish MTV wouldn’t put it on the TV, because he’s not very good.

  • ej

that is soooo bad….red white and blewwwwwww!

  • Dylan

This guy is a total moron.

  • Mama Rose

This is a great cast and I look forward to seeing how they grow through the season. Ryan may well be the sweetie of the crew, and if his writing and singing help facilitate that, then sing out Louise!

he’s just figuring out what he wants to do with his life, which wasn’t singing-focused up until he got to the house. i think he can sing pretty good tho, you ass wipe.

  • Mary

what are you talking about?!?! Ryan is soooo dreaming, I love him!!! love love love him!!!!

  • Daniel Movoooooooooomasterpants

This person is terrible and needs to get outta here. Quick!

  • aaron

i loved it when the producer dude gave props to military fratboy and his very special and very straight mormon fratboy friend, and then told him to go suck an egg. not to mention he got kissed by a tranny. if the hollywood kids from last season couldn’t get famous, all these dudes have to look forward to is losing on those challenges. sometimes life is sweet!

Sorry, don’t agree… I loooove Jason Mraz and I feel that he’s the only good cute male singer-songwriter with that style. (Jack Johnson doesn’t count; he’s too laid-back and boring!) There’s definitely room for him and his awesome voice and cute face. Now if he could just write some good hooks… I’d totally buy his album.

This Ryan kid is not only an interesting singer, he’s funny as hell. This cast is more entertaining than any that I can remember.

  • Chris

I think he is a bigot. I am personally offended by his treatment of Katelyn, and he is deplorably ignorant on so many levels. What’s even more disturbing is that he obviously thinks it’s ok to treat people the way that he does. I hope he shows some growth. Right now for me, he’s a waste of space.

  • Aj

Ryan is my favorite person on the show, and this is coming from a gay guy. He’s ignorant, yes, but knows it and admits it. He is absolutely adorable, especially when he performs.

  • Marvin

I just don’t like Ryan at all. The first episode left a really bad impression personality-wise, he seems quick to shoot back and defend himself for whatever reason. Unfortunately he’s been a big part of the season so far…ironically enough though, I don’t think he’s a bad singer. He seems like an original songwriter and with a little work on his voice, he could make it.

  • Mister F

Yup, I really wish he’d just stop holding that damn guitar and trying to sing. You can tell that half of his roommates think he’s really good and can make something of himself, but the other half are all just smiling along, lol.

  • brian

oh those lyrics! classic. ‘i hate this life i live / i give it as a gift to you”. why thanks! you’re giving me something you hate? how sweet. like ‘i hate these herpes/
    i give them to you–as a gift.’
the next jason mraz? no way. this guy’s the new dylan!

  • holly

i have been a loyal RW watcher forever! i have watched every season. i will not be watching this trash. i have no problem with gay people, but i cannot watch a tranny on tv. its different. it was born male, and it tricks straight men to go out with it. its awful and disgusting. sorry mtv.

  • Anonymous

MTV gives him the opportunity to meet with a producer and out of all his great songs to showcase his star status, he sings about a tampon? seriously dude and he listens to Chet, sorry but both are tools

  • holly is not jolly

To holly, I don’t even know you, but I can deduce by your posting that you are the type of ignorant, compassion-less person who drags down this country (and world). Clearly, you don’t see how your very posting is pure hatred. Shame on you.

  • Holly Is Bad

…a just a little bit evil.

  • Owen

Okay, the best part about Ryan is when he sneers and makes faces like a sixteen year old girl. I LOVE that. Hysterical dude. Keep it up!!

  • Noneya

I also have a problem with the tranny making out with straight guys in bars and having them go on dates w/ her w/o telling them the truth. if she doesn’t watch out, sometime someone not-too understanding is gonna beat her down. i’m not saying she’d deserve it but it is definitely gonna happen one of these days if she keeps it up.

  • Noneya

as for Ryan he is adorable but yeah his singing sucks, i’m so glad the producer blew him off (geez i wonder if mtv did any string-pulling to get him the audition in the first place hmmmm)

  • Paco

ha I love Ryan. Him and Chet are the main reasons why im watching this season! Im sorry but JD has been very boring so far. He needs more than just “cute”

  • Nix

Well, I don’t watch MTV, but it reads like with lyrics like those he’s aping Mraz v. 2, Mr. A-Z, he of the playa entendre; and the world did not need that one to begin with.
