Enter the Fray: Inauguration, Oscars, and 'American Idol'

Springsteenfanning_lWith the -elect officially gone from President Obama’s title, I think it’s safe to say that the election is really, truly over. Thank goodness, because there’s another round of votes to tally: the Oscars. With the nominations announced Thursday, the Inauguration on Tuesday, and a steady stream of Idol all week long, there’s been plenty of pop-culture related activity for a four-day week.

10. Bill O’Reilly and Dennis Miller started some beef with Jay-Z and Young Jeezy. Seriously.

9. Jensen Ackles must’ve left his charisma somewhere on the Supernatural set, because Ben Spier is pretty sure he didn’t bring it to My Bloody Valentine 3-D.

8. Hey Dubya, thanks for the eight years of memories!

7. Battlestar Galactica season 4.5 premiered Friday night, and Marc Bernardin wondered ”What the FRAK just happened?” — an exclamation I’ve shortened to ”BSG: WTF?!”

6. Lindsay Soll only laughed seven times during Saturday’s Rosario Dawson-hosted SNL. I laughed zero times, but that’s because I didn’t watch it.

5. The election’s done, but we haven’t heard the last of Sarah Palin — the Alaska governor is reportedly looking for a book and TV deal once she’s done governing next year.

4. Chris Harrison gave us more behind-the-scenes info about the latest Bachelor episode.

3. It got off to a slow start, but Rob Brunner ended up digging the new U2 single. Not as much as previous lead singles, but enough to get him excited for the upcoming album.

2. Rumor has it that Dakota Fanning was offered the role of small-but-deadly vampire Jane in New Moon, and Mandi Bierly wondered who could play Jane’s bro Alec.

1. The Academy might’ve recognized Slumdog Millionaire and Ben Button, but there were a significant number of snubs — Springsteen for Best Original Song, anyone?

Regarding #9 .. and I know this was posted up in the yin-yang on that article .. but My Bloody Valentine 3D was NOT intended to be Dean Winchester takes on a pick-axe murderer .. Jensen Ackles was playing a completely different character (Tom Hanniger, for anyone who doesn’t know) .. and THAT character was not intended to be charismatic. Give Jensen a little credit – he CAN play different parts, he’s a really good actor and he DID do good work in the movie.

I’m still not over their snub of Eddie Vedder last year.

Okay seriously, why would you repeat that ridiculous idea that Jensen Ackles was supposed to be Dean Winchester in My Bloody Valentine, or playing a bad boy?
Did any of you see the movie. Tom Hanniger may (spoiler warning in case someone wants to stop reading) have turned out be the killer. But until the reveal he was playing a character that caused a mine shaft accident, nearly was murdered by Harry Warden — the original pick axe killer and then disappeared for ten years. He was a totally different character than Dean — shy, fragile in a way, and mysterious. And Jensen SOLD that. So yeah, DUH you didn’t see Dean Winchester or a bad boy charisma because you weren’t supposed too. Since when are actors critisized for actually you know ACTING the part.
Seeing it once was bad enough, twice is just ridiculous.

It bears repeating! Thank you rachelelisabeth for saying exactly what so many others of us are thinking!! Duh on Ben Spier, for sure.

Jensen did a great job as Tom Hanniger. He wasn’t supposed to be Dean Winchester. I found Tom to be very sympathetic, by far the most sympathetic of the major characters. He was exactly what he needed to be for Tom Hanniger, his body language was much more tentative(fits Tom’s character), his voice was softer, but when it was time to change, he did so wonderfully and was downright scary. He had a difficult role to play, with not the greatest script in the world and competing with 3D technology that everyone was working with for the first time, and he did a great job.
