I don’t know about you guys, but I sat down for tonight’s episode of American Idol with the expectation that I wouldn’t be getting up off the couch for 120 minutes. So imagine my surprise when after just an hour, the San Francisco auditions gave way to some kind of ferocious slug-like creature popping out of an ill-fated epidemiologist’s mouth on Fox’s freshman sci-fi sort-of hit Fringe. (Zoiks!) Not that I’m complaining. I like my audition episodes lean and mean. Well, not mean as in "let’s abuse the freaks and geeks," but mean as in "judges reward talent, end deluded singing aspirations of tone-deaf wannabes." Which is why I was bummed to see a few too many marginal contestants score themselves Golden Tickets tonight (one solely by using his cute grade-school kids as props) while the show’s producers put the spotlight on only one hopeful who showed the kind of potential that could lead to a forecast of falling confetti come late May.
What did you think of tonight’s Idol episode? Weigh in on our message board below, then check back around 6 a.m. for my full TV Watch recap. Oh, and in the interim (in case you missed it) press play on the season premiere of Idolatry. A very popular third-place finisher from a previous season (MELINDA FREAKING DOOLITTLE!!!) makes a special guest appearance, and you won’t want to miss it!

They promised more goodness, less pain and mocking: were the good ones just so boring they couldn’t do that? And only 12 out of all of San Fran’s auditioners? Wow. Boring, boring episode.
I agree, rather dull. Craving more of the good ones. So tired of the weirdos. CNN got my attention in the end, I’m afraid.
I thought this was a fairly boring episode, but I did very much enjoy Adam, who I will now be referring to as the Cook-alike, because his audition reminded me so much of David! Looking forward to the TV Watch!
I agree with Andie! Adam is the first contestant who’s peaked my interest, but mostly because he reminds me so much of David Cook!
I didn’t really enjoy this episode. I don’t know Slezak, I like my episodes long and awesome, and this episode was neither in my opinion. The talent was slim, and I can’t remember anybody except Adam Lambert, but I still didn’t even like his audition that much.
Where are the belters – and I’m not talking about Von-tron. But the real belters, I want to hear someone with a voice as big as that bedazzled Christmas bow on Aretha Franklin’s head during Obama inauguration.
Idolatry is better than tonight’s AI. I can’t watch the show every week this year so I’m depending on Idolatry to give me the scoop. The only singers I liked tonight was the the fellow who they said was theatrical (Andy?) and the last fellow who takes care of his mother and sounds like a singer from the past, someone like Nat King Cole.
i hated everything about last night’s episode. so much for cutting back on the bad auditions! i hated that the first person who auditioned was clearly being mocked. and even though she made it through to hollywood, she’s clearly not going past the first round. then the second person who made it through to hollywood (approx. 25 minutes into the episode) used his kids to help him, and also clearly won’t make it through to hollywood. it wasn’t until 50 minutes into the episode that we finally saw someone who made it through (only the third of the episode!!!) and who had a chance of making it. don’t worry though – we got a good montage of people getting through at the 45 minute mark. so annoying! these episodes are a total waste of time. and here i thought a post-nigel era would bring big changes.
The first girl that they accepted into the Hollywood round from SF, Tatiana or something. She was annoying. Oh god her laugh was like nails on a chalkboard!
In idolatry, what about lil roundss?
Two words regarding Jesus: Bulge Alert!
Watched the whole hour (plus a minute) in twenty-eight minutes. We have a new record!
Liked Adam a lot, and Kai a little, but other than that it was kind of a dead episode. The crazy mermaid chick and the dad never should have been put through.
First of all, Slezak, you rock for bringing back Mindy Doo! If you don’t have her sing on the next Idolatry, that will be a crying shame – worse than Kara Diowhosit screeching at Simon tonight. I was not feeling SF at all – maybe the dude from Wicked can eke his way into the top 36, but I don’t think anyone else has a chance. And the dad pimping out his kids? Where are our evil uberlords when you need them? (Although Simon’s face as the whole thing went down? And scoring a hug off the kid – who, btw, not all that cute? Yeah, that’s the stuff) Now that y’all are big timin’ on Idolatry, you probably don’t need any call in guests, but just in case you do, I’m totally available. Call me. You wanna see my kids? They’ll make signs.
Ok, yes I agree this episode had very little on talent, but it was hysterical on almost every audition. Its like Simon took genuine comedy lessons over the break or something, he was very much on ball tonite!
Watching Barack and Michelle dance to “At Last” for the 7th time tonight was more entertaining than tonight’s American Idol.
