My (VERY) fond farewell to the 'L Word' theme song

Tagged:

This is it, people! Tomorrow night, the countdown to the last-ever episode of The L Word shall commence! Yes, the best little only American lesbian drama series in all the land is packing up its U-Haul and driving into TV history in just a few short months. Longtime fans are, I think, especially excited about the series’ final big story arc, because hi? They’re killing off Jenny Schecter!!!! Personally, I’ve long secretly loved Mia Kirshner’s completely off-the-wall, totally bonkers performance. That is, if you believe she’s really acting. Having met and interviewed her twice, I can assure you that jury is very much out.

But enough with the storylines and on to the real reason for this post: That theme song. When The L Word debuted, its theme song wasn’t much of a "song" at all — it was about 10 crisp seconds of synthesized club noise that worked perfectly with the groundbreaking show it was introducing. Then…then…then came season 2, when the godawful girl group Betty recorded a godawful new intro that quickly earned a reputation as THE WORST TV THEME SONG IN THE HISTORY OF EVER. (Sorry, Just the Ten of Us!) This atonal ode to, um, women ("Chicks drivin’ fast/Ingenuuuues with long lashes!") is every self-respecting L Word fan’s bete noire, and because it’s really that bad, I force myself to sit through the opening credits every time I watch an episode. There’s just something about the way the women of Betty hit — or rather, don’t come one bit close to hitting — the song’s treacherous final note that truly makes life worth living. It hurts so good. So very, very good, in fact, that I feel compelled to share it with you now.

So! PopWatchers, are you slowly bleeding to death from your ears, or are you still lucid enough to share your opinion of the song below? Furthermore, are you sad to see The L Word sign off? What would you like to see happen in the final season? And which character will you miss the most? Please don’t say Kit.

  • Sharlin

That is the worst theme I have ever heard. OMG.

I am very sad to see The L Word go. It’s been an amazing ride, though. I’ll miss Alice and Bettina the most…not so much Jenny and DEFINITELY not Max. And I hope we haven’t seen the last of Dawn Denbo. Elizabeth Keener is a riot!

THE WORST theme song ever and I LOVE TV themes. The character I’m going to miss the most is Peggy Peabody. When she goes into that jail, oh my God! Is it me or is Holland Taylor amazing in absolutely everything she does? Peggy is the best thing to happen to that show. They should have used her more.

OMG, agree completely! I blogged about how much I hate those credits 2 months ago! http://givemetvorgivemedeath.blogspot.com/2008/11/credit-crisis.html

I have loved The L Word and will miss Bette and Alice. They are fine actresses who are always very believable.I will really miss the show. And hey you guys! I always LOVED the theme song! When originally introduced, I liked it much better than the first season’s song…much more upbeat and fresh like all of the beautiful characters portrayed in the show. Quit hatin’! LOL… It’s a catchy toon! :)

I love the theme and I will definitely miss Shane and Dana.

    And Helena!!

I have to agree with Tess that Peggy is FEROSH. The prison scene line “I’d give it to you family style” has become a regular phrase of mine. I’ll miss Jodie, and Bette, and Alice the most. More than anything, I’ll just miss Jennifer Beales. God how I hope she stays on TV after this. She’s AMAZING.

Oh, and the song is TERRIBLE. GAH. Almost or equally as bad as the whole weirdly cut opening scene.

Yeah, the theme song kind of sucks. lol. But still, The L Word is one of my favorite tv shows and I am going to be very sad to see it go. I am going to miss every character. Seriously, without every charachter (crazy, useless ones or integral, leading ones), the show wouldn’t be what it is today. But my favorite will always be Shane. I will miss seeing the gorgeous and talented Kate Moennig every Sunday.

Worst theme song ever. It’s just a full frontal assault on the ears. Hate it, hate it, hate. I will, however, miss the show a ton. I’ll miss Tina and Bette the most but, really, I love all the characters, except Max and Jody’s interpreter. Actually, I don’t like Jody all that much, either. “L Word” is one of those shows where, even when the plots aren’t all that strong, the characters carry the show. I hope to see all of these actresses around again.

I completely agree that this is the worst theme song ever. I absolutely adore Jenny, so I’m not terribly thrilled with what’s going down. I will definitely miss her most. Aside from the doomed Ms. Schecter, I’ll miss Bette the second most.

I remember being being so excited when the 2nd season premiered and then that theme song started and I felt like I had been slapped when my head whipped back in horror. HATE IT. I’ll miss Bette, Tina and Alice the most. Bette for fashion, Tina for sincerity and Alice for one-liners.

Horrible theme song! Yuck. I can never bear to sit through it. Tina is my favorite and I love Tina and Bette together, but really I’ll miss all of them. Except Max. Sue me, I loved Jenny, as crazy as she was I always found her interesting to watch.
