Site of the Day: Vote for GAC's Top 20 Love Songs

The cable channel GAC, Great American Country, will count down its 20 Top Love Songs on Feb. 11 in a special hosted by PopWatch fave Blake Shelton. You can vote for your 10 favorites on gactv.com through Feb. 1. Your initial response when browsing the list of 150-plus options might be, What the —? The selections (or, rather, obvious omissions) are puzzling. But that’s what makes it interesting in the end. It’s an actual competition. My list:

1. Alison Krauss & Union Station’s "When You Say Nothing At All"
2. Randy Travis’ "Forever And Ever, Amen"
3. Garth Brooks’ "To Make You Feel My Love"
4. Keith Urban’s "Raining on Sunday"
5. George Strait’s "Carrying Your Love With Me"
6. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s "It’s Your Love"
7. Shania Twain’s "From This Moment On" (but only if we’re talking about the version featuring Bryan White)
8. Josh Turner’s "Your Man"
9. Jason Michael Carroll’s "Livin’ Our Love Song"
10. Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black’s "When I Said I Do," below (picked over Reba McEntire and Vince Gill’s "The Heart Won’t Lie," even though that video is genius)

YES to Shania/Bryan White (where is he??), YES YES to anything Vince Gill, although I could do 10 of just him, and Yep to Garth’s “To Make You Feel My Love”. Off to vote – thanks Mandi for the heads up. My cable no longer carries GAC or CMT.

Oh: what a WEAK list GAC… lets try and put a little more effort next time, ‘K?

what a joke of a list — must be a love fest with Rascall Flats, keith Urban, & Faith Hill. Half those songs are not even “love” songs & where are some of the classic love songs – Dolly’s “I wil always love you” or “Old flames” or Kenny Roger’s “Lady” or Alabama’s “Love in the third degree” or Garth’s “If tomorrow never comes” or “Hold me” by KT or “Shut up & kiss me” by Mary Chapin Carpenter if there needs to be an uptempo love song — come on there are so many better choices than these & a lot more songs out there outside the past 10 years (maybe not a video for all, but better songs)

Where’s “Me and You” or “If I Lost It” by Kenny Chesney? “Amazed” by Lonestar? “Keeper of The Stars” ~ Tracy Byrd? “He Stopped Loving Her Today” ~ George Jones? Or “I Cross My Heart” ~ George Strait? I could go on and on…
I mean good list Mandi, but check out some of these other ones. And definitely check out the original Keith Whitley version of “When You Say Nothing at All.”

What ridiculous choices to pick from! I could only pick two – Collin Raye’s “In This Life” and Garth Brooks’ “If Tomorrow Never Comes”. Most of the rest of the choices are forgettable recent pop songs. I wouldn’t expect a truly great (but more obscure) pick like Clint Black’s “Something That We Do” to necessarily have been on the list, but it is one of the greatest songs about love ever written.

    A clarification – I’m criticizing the GAC choices, not Mandi’s. :)

I agree the list on GAC was terrible. I am missing He stopped loving her today by george jones.

He stopped loving her is a break up song. As powerful as it is, I would not count it as a love song.
My personal favorite is “Let Me Love You Tonight” by The Pure Praire Leauge. It topped both the Country and Pop charts and introduced Vince Gill.

Where is Sammy Kershaw’s “Love of my Life”? One of the best love songs ever!

  • Jessica

Thanks for the Bryan White inclusion. He took that song from overly dramatic cheese to pure bliss:) What an underrated artist…
Maybe EW could do a “Where Are They Now”-type thing and spotlight him (pretty please with a cherry on top, sprinkles, and chocolate syrup)?

Stephanie T., you can correct me if I’m wrong, but I always thought that He Stopped Loving Her Today is about a man who loved a woman until the day he died. He stopped loving her when he died. That to me qualifies it as a love song–one of the best love songs of all time.
