Steve McQueen biopic producers should give Damian Lewis a call

Lewismcqueen_lIf we can all agree that Steve McQueen is the coolest actor in the history of ever, then this just-announced Steve McQueen biopic should be the coolest movie in the history of ever, right? There are a thousand things that can go wrong between now and whenever this movie gets released — bad writing, horrible direction, shooting in Smell-o-vision, etc. — but here’s the one thing they need to do right:

Cast Damian Lewis (far left) as McQueen.

That was the first thing that struck me upon seeing him as Dick Winters in HBO’s Band of Brothers miniseries, how much he looked like the man. And then watching him work the detective beat in Life sealed it. No, he’s not a movie star, he’s just a damned good actor who’d be the spot on choice.

Okay, let’s pretend I’m wrong (which I’m not, but go on)…who would you cast?

Damian Lewis!! Love him! He’d be an awesome Steve McQueen – please make this happen Hollywood!

  • Stephanie T.

The ONLY two people that look like McQueen are Damien Lewis and Daniel Craig. Craig is probably really busy on other projects, so Lewis would probably be the easier person to hire.

Damian Lewis is a GREAT choice for this role. He is a great actor and would do Steve McQueen proud!
Plus, he is so very HOT, just like the Man, Steve.

  • Andie

Damian Lewis would be good. I’d also throw in Kevin McKidd from Journeyman/Greys/Rome. I think he does good work.

  • tim

i think the only people up to the task are George Nardi or Thomas Jane

  • Lady K

    Christian Bale.
Granted, he may be too busy between being the Dark Knight and John Connor, but he would be perfect. He is the only actor out there now with not only the talent to rival Steve McQueen, but also has his sense of aplomb and coolness to come even close.

  • Mells

Good call! Damian Lewis would be an excellent Steve McQ but just as long as it doesn’t interfere with Life’s filming schedule!!

  • hayley

I think he would make a great choice. I have noticed that some people threw out the ideas of Christian Bale and Daniel Creig but when it comes to making a great biopic it works to have and actor whose personality isn’t going to outshine the subject of the film (subconscious or not)

  • tim

    yeah or George Nardi

  • tim

    yeah or George Nardi

Let’s be serious. There’s no one else for this but Daniel Craig. I love Damien Lewis with all my heart and soul, but his face is too thin, his chin is too pointed. I don’t care how much you have to pay him, GET DANIEL CRAIG ON THIS PROJECT. He is Steve McQueen reincarnated.

  • V

    Daniel Craig. Hands down.

  • No One

There’s no working actor today who’s fit to even scrub McQueen’s jock strap. The exact reason one would want to make a movie about him is the same exact reason it can’t be done…. he was one a f’n kind.

I’d much rather see sequel to a classic McQueen movie than see a biopic. He was an interesting dude (his pre-fame days are more interesting than the Hollywood years – check it out) so maybe cast a younger actor, and ditch the Hollywood stuff.

  • blahgirls

ok, I can’t be the only one who sees a slight resemblance to House in that pic

  • KV

Damian Lewis is the perfect choice to play Steve McQueen! Not only is there a facial resemblance but both of the actors are strong physical actors with the ability to portray feelings with their faces and bodies and few words. And Damian Lewis knows how to ride a motorcycle, too. He owned a Harley in his younger days and rode it all over the UK and France.

  • Elizabeth

Daniel Craig – but the whole thing seems a little Sacreligious (SP) to me.

  • servo

Daniel Craig? Seriously? I guess I don’t see it. Damian Lewis is a much better choice.

  • Micah

You’re not wrong. Damien Lewis would be the best. I was just telling my wife how much I thought Damien Lewis looked like Steve McQueen and could pull off the McQueen-cool without breaking a sweat.

  • kerry

Damian Lewis, the one and only for McQueen for sure. Here’s proof: http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/8164/damianasmcqueencopyxn3.jpg

  • sam

What about Neal McDonough? Seriously, I was just watching The Sand Pebbles and thought, Jeez, that guy from Desperate Housewives sure looks like Steve McQueen

  • Rich

No offense to Lewis, but this is a terrible idea all around. Steve McQueen may have been the coolest person in the history of the planet. No one, and I mean no one, could come close to duplicating anything about him. All concerned should drop this idea before they embarrass themselves.

  • kim jean

Daniel Craig would be better. He’s cooler. Honestly though, no one is in the same building as MacDaddy MCQUEEN!!

  • Anonymous

Sorry, I have to agree with No One. Not one actor today can play the real Steve McQueen. Yes there are a few who could pass physically (Damian for the win), but I have serious doubts about the depth of the character.

  • sian

Kevin McKidd is a better match.

  • sandy

Christian Bale is a much better fit but for Bio’s its best for a newcomer

  • aps

i agree the choice would a be a good one. but i do worry about the coolness factor. but that’s anyone who takes the role. BUT, i think he’d be the best choice.

  • Em

I love Damian Lewis! When is Life coming back? Regarding the subject at hand, I don’t think a McQueen biopic is a good idea. McQueen the man has been overshadowed by McQueen the legend, and I don’t think anyone can do the legend justice.

  • J.

Damien Lewis is a great choice. But I have to also agree that Kevin McKidd would be the $h!t in that role.

  • elicia

Michael Weatherly from NCIS! He resembles McQueen and can definitely pull off the swagger.
