Golden Globes: What was your favorite moment?

Categories: 30 Rock, Golden Globes

Another Golden Globes has come and gone, and as usual, the mashup of TV stars, movie stars, and alcoholic beverages (both at home and the Beverly Hilton) made for an entertaining telecast that left me handing out a variety of trophies in my head. The prize for most touching acceptance speech by a little-known British actress in a movie I haven’t yet seen went to Happy-Go-Lucky’s Sally Hawkins. The Strangest Evening-Long Audition for an Unannounced Marilyn Monroe Biopic trophy went to giggly, frosty-locked Drew Barrymore. And the special award for Controversial Use of a Nehru Jacket With Beaded Neckline went to Monk’s Tony Shalhoub. (Yeah, I’m envious; dude worked that look like a nine-to-five.)

Still, for my money, the night’s best moment had to be Tina Fey’s acceptance speech (embedded below) for Best Actress in a TV Series (Musical or Comedy). Not only was Fey’s win well-deserved, but her speech (clocking in at a mercifully brief one minute, 17 seconds) contained the phrase "good gravy," eschewed the typical (boring) litany of agents, attorneys, and other sundry advisers, and best of all, was packed with punch lines, including a scathing takedown of her most dogged Internet haters. (Gawker dug up some backstory on Fey’s nemeses, Dianefan, BabsonLacrosse, and Cougar-Letter; click here to read all about it.)

But, hey, as Dianefan has proven, not everyone loves Tina Fey. So check out my colleague Adam Markovitz’s gallery of the Golden Globes’ Best and Worst Moments, then click on down to the message board below and tell us your picks for highlights (and lowlights) of the telecast.

I have a few favorite moments from last night. First and foremost, Heath Ledger winning. I loved Tina Fey’s acceptance speech and while I think she’s hilarious, I’m ready for someone else to win in her category. She’s nearing on the brink of overexposed for my taste, but again, she’s hilarious. Loved Ricky Gervais last night, which is a change. I usually can’t stand him, but he was so funny. I think though, my favorite moment of the night was when Kate Winslet was accepting the Best Actress award and she forgot Angelina’s name! HAHA! Priceless!

  • Michelle

HANDS DOWN- Ricky Gervais telling Kate Winslet that all she had to do to win was be in a Holocaust film… AWESOME throw back to Extras! AND she was sitting next to Leo! The one star that Ricky and Steve couldn’t get on the show! Ohh the irony….

  • KG

definitely tina fey’s speech, esp the internet haters part. i can’t believe they were actually real haha

  • KG

oh and kate winslet’s acceptance speech, esp forgetting angelina jolie’s name haha. i was po’d at first when she won bec i was rooting for anne hathaway (or even meryl streep so we could have an entertaining speech), but kate’s heartfelt speech made me happy she won

  • cesca

Colin Farrell’s explanation for sniffing was the highlight for me. Best coke joke of the night.

  • Jenna

Definitely Kate Winslet’s second acceptance speech. You can completely tell she did not expect to win, and who would when you are up against Meryl Streep. The whole, Leo, I have loved you for 13 years was so fricken cute. Its nice to see two actors actually have a real relationship and not just a working one where they must tolerate eachother.

When Anna Paquin won her first Golden Globe for her role in True Blood. It’s about time she won and she looked beautiful. I’m surprised that I haven’t seen her on any best dressed lists!

  • Snarf

Best moment? Emma Thompson asking the girl from Happy Go Lucky if she needed any help during her acceptance speech.

  • jaime

I loved Tinas SUCK IT…it was so mean girlish!!!
But i loved when at the end they were telling everyone to hurry….and they were like um shut it!

  • meg

I have a lot of obvious favorite momements, but my favorite understated moment was Emma Thompson congratulating Kate Winslet when she won best actress because she was her mentor on the set of Sense and Sensibility.

  • Rahul

I liked Sally Hawkins’ speech. Please nominate her, AMPAS.

  • Lynny

Non winner moment- Ricky Gervais teasing “Winslet” about the Holocaust movie
Winner/Speech moment- I loved Kate Winslet thanking Leonardo di Caprio and watching him tear up. It was very sweet.
Winner/Speech moment part deux- You gotta love a man who thanks his dogs. Mickey Rourke’s win and speech was great.

  • Stanley

I liked Rumor Willis handing out awards and feeling important!

Seeing how exited Dev Patel and Freida Pinto were every time Slumdog won another much deserved award. Oh, and the fact that Shahrukh Khan was there to introduce the movie, even though no one there had any idea what a huge star he is.

  • Chicago48

Loved Mickey Rourke’s comeback…although it should have happened with Sin City…Colin Farrell was very appreciative…Kate Winslet’s two wins — what a surprise! Tracey Morgan’s acceptance speech – hilarious.

  • Me

I’m very happy Kate Winslet one (finally!), but it was almost a given. Here’s the rule with the Globes for the past few years: if there’s a non-American in the group, they’ll win. Duh. Hollywood FOREIGH press. Even if I’ve never heard or seen the movies, I can guess who’ll win based on that. The TV folk are a little different, but if it’s TV, HBO will win (if not HBO, something similar like Mad Men). I would say 30 Rock is the exception, but it’s the hip show right now, so of course it’ll win. The Globes = far too predictable they’re kinda disappointing.

  • Me

That was FOREIGN press. Now I look like a idiot. ;)

  • mb

I like Kate Winslet, glad she finally won. But think that her forgotting Angelina Jolie AND Anne Hathaway was not in good taste.

  • Jim

I liked Mickey Rourke’s victory as Best Actor. I hope his comeback continues. And I like that “Slumdog Millionaire” won Best Drama. It is now the front-runner for the Oscar as Best Picture.

  • Dee

Thank God Kate Winslet finally won!!! If she doesn’t win an Oscar this year, I swear I will throw things. It’s long overdue. Loved Tina Fey, too.

  • Jill

Ricky Gervais speech. And the beer he was holding.

  • Scott P

Besides Tina Fey’s speech, the other highlights were Tracy Morgan’s speech for 30 Rock’s win (“take that Cate Blancett!”), and Darren Aranofsky jokingly flipping off Mickey Rourke during his speech and having it make it on the air on NBC.

  • Nancy

Loved Kate Winslet winning her second award, telling herself to “gather.” She was adorable. Hard to believe she hasn’t won anything yet, she’s been nominated so many times. Hopefully this is her year.

  • Nancy

I can’t get into Gawker. Apparently the overlords here have blocked that site. Why? Overuse of the word “bacchanalia”? I’ll check it out at home tonight.

  • kingofcities

Mickey Rourke thanking his dogs actually choked me up a bit. Best speech of the night. Weirdest moment? Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange presenting an award and I swear they looked like they had just smoked a joint and been making out backstage. They were giggling and being all touchie-feelie with each other. CREEPY.

  • Winona

Three words: Drunk Emma Thompson. Or at least I think she was drunk. Either way, she was hilarious.

  • Jill

to KingofCities: I was thinking the same thing. When they showed up on the Red Carpet holding hands and giggling I thought it was odd. (I had no idea that they had filmed a movie together and knew each other.)

  • TorontoTom

My LEAST favorite thing was, as usual, Nancy O’Dell on the red carpet. She’s useless! How many celebs had to say “I can’t hear a word you’re saying” before she thought to RAISE HER VOICE?!? Could a producer have whispered in her eare SPEAK LOUDER?!? Her “I’m not getting fresh!” line to Salma Hayek was so cheesey. I actually thought Brooke Burke was very solid – give her the lead duties next time, NBC. Let O’Dull cover the smoking area…

  • to TorontoTom

And then she congratulated Sting on his nomination when he wasn’t nominated.

  • Erin

Ricky Gervais’ entire bit was probably one of the best parts of the show. I loved his reference to the Extras episode with Kate Winslet in it…genius.
Random favorite moment: When the Jonas Brothers took the stage, the camera cut to a very angry looking Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus. Hilarious!
