'Ugly Betty' Bites: Marc & Willy quip it up

Last night’s Ugly Betty was rather heavy, what with Ignacio being struck down with a heart attack and all. Which, by the way, was so completely tragic. Did anyone else squeeze out a tear or two during that final scene with the hospital and Willy and Daniel kissing their new loves and that sad, sad song playing? Anyway, all the drama made for an hour that wasn’t exactly exploding with the delicious quips that we dedicated Betty fans so dearly love. But I managed to come up with several that I thought were pretty good — Wilhelmina and Marc, of course, lead the way, with their genius bites on everything from friendship to, um, Hamm sandwiches. (If you watched, you know to what I refer.) My four favorites get video and poll treatment below (so please vote for your favorite!), and the rest of them are typed up after the jump.

“If we do, one of you dies.” —Wilhelmina, threatening her the lives of her staff members if they lose another month to rival Elle

“Can I help it if my balls are bigger than his?” —Wilhelmina, after Connor says he likes the “good cop, bad cop” thing going on between her and Daniel

“I’m Marc St. James. I work for Wilhelmina Slater. I once had a threesome with Jon Hamm and Mia Hamm. I called it the night of the Hamm sandwich.” —Marc, giving a rather memorable anecdote while networking

“Do you know why Heidi Klum never wears open-toed shoes? Twelve little piggies.” —Marc, with another memorable bit while networking

“You’re a mean, not-so-lean, contact-gettin’ machine. You’re the Terminator. You’re the Bettynator!” —Marc, trying to encourage Betty to get out there and network

“Oh, I tell you Hilda, this is a great set-up you’ve got going here. You know, you can shop, you can get your hair cut. Throw in a food court, I would never leave.” —A very pregnant Christina, upon entering Hilda’s new hair salon and boutique

“Oh, friendship is the oldest trick in the book!” —Wilhelmina, after Betty says she thought the rival who stole Mode’s secrets was her friend

“Oh well I love looking down at the little people going about their little lives.” —Wilhelmina, looking out from the window of her apartment

“Oh my God, they still do the ‘Ugly Wall’! This was totally my idea. Everyday we would put up pictures of coworkers we hated and then make fun of them. Aww, good times.” —Marc, reminiscing about the “Ugly Wall” he started when he interned at Elle

God, I love this show! It’s one of the few shows that I enjoy that has managed to stay on top of it’s game. Heroes sucks, Prison Break has lost all direction, Grey’s is retarded, and even the Hills has annoyed me to no end. Bring back the Ugly Betty tv recap! This ep was particularly well done. I don’t know how this show manages to balance all those characters so well. Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives are keeping the dramedy alive!

So I see that the new year sadly did NOT bring about an “Ugly Betty” TV Watch.
I hate to sound like a broken record but this “Ugly Betty Bites” is a complete waste of time. Especially when every single post is a variation of “Marc and Willy quip it up”, “Marc rules the night.” “Willy back to quippy form” and so on and so forth.
How about a proper recap of the ENTIRE show instead of a Marc and Willy greatest hits collection, featuring occasional appearances by the rest of the cast?

This episode just annoyed me. I hated that Hilda and Ignacio expected Betty to ignore her career for Hilda’s shop. Why is Hilda’s job more important than Betty’s? Just because it’s in the family home, that doesn’t make it a family enterprise. Even Ignacio’s heart attack seemed calculated to make Betty appear selfish because she ignored Hilda’s calls while paying attention to her own life and career. The previews for next week make it seem as though I’ll want to slap Hilda. Again.

This season has gotten steadily better, but I wasn’t crazy about last night’s episode.

Do the recap and stop this annoying quote/quip list.

I can count on one hand the tv series I expect to be cutting edge, engaging, and well written every single week without fail. Ugly Betty is the cream of that crop. While I do love the constistently hilarious jabs thrown by Wilhelmena, Mark, and Amanda each week, nothing is more powerful than the zingers you don’t see coming. Betty turning into the Bettynator, scoping out potential contacts, complete with the computer screen board and robotic sound effects was a highlight. The meat of the show dealing with Hilda’s Grand Opening and Mode’s battle with Elle, quietly and cleverly set up one of the most thrilling endings I have ever seen for the show. Honestly, that last section played out like a Desperate Housewives season finale. Connor’s girl confessing her love to Daniel in an accidental street meeting, vulnerable Willy & a drunk, unhitched Connor hooking-up “Body Heat” style, and the guilt-ridden Betty breakdown at the hospital, indeed was heart crushing. Stunning tv!

    Hamm sandwich. definitely my favorite.

I agree with Melinda65. Betty’s family have always supported her ambitions, and now they’re on her case because she’s trying to build her career? Come on!! This was a clunker of an episode. I even felt manipulated by Ignacio’s heart attack. It just felt contrived. I have to say, though, I love Michael Urie. That guy is amazing as Marc. I really hope he gets an Emmy nomination this year, because he’s really been outstanding all season. BTW, can anyone tell me the name of that song that was playing as the two couples were hooking up at the end of the episode? It was beautiful.

bootsy, I was wondering about the song too, and I did a bit of research. It’s by a French artist named Sebastien Tellier and the track is titled La Ritournelle. It’s available on iTunes.

I completely agree with you melinda! I hated how they were trying to make her feel guilty. She wasnt being selfish at all. Hilda wants betty to do her own job AND be at every function to do Hildas job. It was getting ridiculous. Betty was completely in the right there.

  • Dan

Totally agree that the Suarez clan was being unfair (and uncharacteristic) to Betty. I loved the episode, but, Hilda bugged me to no end. Betty’s in a (albeit fictional..LOL) cutthroat business, naturally her job should rank high on her priority list.

  • cait38

Does Hilda say f@#ck it at the end of the clip about the butcher? No, I am hearing things, right?

  • Latina Chick

In answer to Cait38, Dan, and everybody else who is perplexed by Hilda’s and Ignacio’s reaction and “ouf of charater” behavior this episode needs to remember that there are HUGE cultural differences between Mexicans and most Latinos and the American culture—especially for females. Seeing Thursday’s episode made me cringe because many of us get caught in that catch-22: trying to get ahead in our career without feeling s****y for not being there for family.

I am torn. If I post something does it mean I am endorsing your stupid, insulting Betty Bites? But if I boycott them and don’t post at all, will that be interpreted as not enought demand for a proper TV Watch? Ugh, to post or not to post? By the way, I thought Hilda and Ignacio were horriby unfair to Betty.

  • c.e.

As a guy. I know that I would have to do my job and family will be supportive if I miss a function. That was an episode that to me showed a small battle of the sexes in that aspect. But I did applaud Betty when she put her foot down. Of course she’ll now feel guilty about it with her father sick. Also I don’t get why Danial trusted Willie at ALL. Yes his selfish groin spoke for him but it didn’t seem consistant. I know it TV but…still.
