"Jules, you know…honey…this isn’t real. You know what it is? It’s St. Elmo’s Fire. Electric flashes of light that appear in dark skies outta nowhere. Sailors would guide entire journeys by it, but the joke was on them. There was no fire. There wasn’t even a St. Elmo. They made it up. They made it up because they thought they needed it to keep ‘em going when things got tough, just like you’re making up all of this…. We’re all going through this…. Hey, it’s our time on the edge." — Billy (Rob Lowe), to Jules (Demi Moore), in St. Elmo’s Fire

I thought it was the name of the bar they hung out at?
Snarf, it was the name of the bar they hung out at. Rob’s talking about the legend of St. Elmo’s Fire. Thank you, Mandi, for taking me back to my senior year of high school and the movie that the first guy I fell in love with took me to.
As far as “Quote of the Day: Explain your title editions”, I’d still have to rank Silent Bob’s monologue explaining the title in “Chasing Amy” above this one. Also, there was no crying.
Hilarious – I loved this movie (still watch it when I stumble across it on cable!), but even in 1985 I knew this was bad, bad writing!
Seriously bad advice to give a cocaine addict, but then again he was an alcoholic. This movie doesn’t hold up as well as the other 80′s classics, imo. I’ll watch 16 Candles anytime it’s on, but I rarely stop for this one.
“My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die.”
I realize it has nothing to do with the title of the movie, but it’s just the greatest quote from the greatest movie ever!
I had a poster of Rob Lowe as Billy on my dorm room wall. I did love this movie.
And…cue cheesy theme song! There were many dorky lines in this movie, but this takes the cake. Still doesn’t keep me from getting nostalgic when I think about seeing this for the first time…on Betamax.
