Is Mickey Rourke the next big ex-star to score a career rebound via the Iron Man franchise? He may well be. Variety is reporting that the 1980s idol — whose long professional losing streak apparently ended with his award-baiting performance in this season’s The Wrestler — is in talks to play the bad guy ("Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego") in Iron Man 2. (This comes right on the heels, of course, of news that the actor has signed on to a Sylvester Stallone action vehicle.) The sequel is due to start shooting this spring and be released in the summer of 2010. As everybody knows by now, last summer’s Iron Man juiced the Hollywood career of another 1980s idol who had fallen on tough times, Robert Downey Jr.
Personally, I think this sounds like a good idea. I mean, hell, judging by this photo, Rourke kinda already resembles a comic-book baddie! Still, I hope that this excellent franchise isn’t just succumbing to gimmickry. What about you? Thoughts, concerns, ovations — bring ‘em, PopWatchers!

cool, crimson dynamo I believe … just hope they don’t give him a cheesy awful russian accent like cate blanchett in indy 4
I can’t stand him!!!!
How is one movie a “cool franchise” yet?
QED
If he is going to be in the movie, please cover up his fugly plastic surgery botched face up!
So they axe Terence Howard, a great actor who happened to sorta act like a jerk during filming, and then they hire a lesser talent who happens to have a reputation for being completely insufferable? They’re asking for trouble. That is going to be one ugly set.
so, tell me again how mr. one note terrance howard (replaced by a much more talented don cheadle) is a better actor than mickey rourke.
Glad he’s making a comeback…but he is hideous looking. Sorry. That man is hard to look at.
Suitably hideous.
Perfect choice.
whoa, that guy look wack.
This is not the hottie from 9 1/2 Weeks and Angel Heart. I refuse to accept it. The real Mickey Rourke must be buried at Neverland ranch with the real Michael Jackson. That’s the only logical explanation.
I think he’s a great choice for another snarky type superhero or an evil villian. He carries that persona so well in his life off screen whether he means to do it or not, and I quite sure he’ll be able to knock that out of the park when it time to deliver on-screen.

God, he is a shell of his former self. In 9-1/2 weeks, he was downright hot… I know that was a long time ago, but what’s with the f’d up plastic surgery? Yikes…
Ugh. Please no. I can’t stand him. This, if true, puts a slight damper on my excitement for this movie.
Its a nice blog.
Thanks.
