'G-Force' vs. 'G-Force': Why the new trailer hurts so bad

Ever bite into a Skittle when you were expecting an M&M? It’s not that what you get is bad, necessarily, but entirely not what you were looking for. That’s how I felt when I clicked on a link for the trailer to a new live-action G-Force movie. I expected a big-budget Bruckheimered version of this:

But what I got was this:

movie trailers and clips

I’m sure that if you’re seven (about the age I was when I found Battle of the Planets on afterschool TV), super-powered guinea pigs fighting robots might tickle your fancy. (Though if it was the long-rumored film adaptation of Grant Morrison’s We3, it’d tickle me all over.) But for adult me, seeing that was like a bad hit of…something you get bad hits off of.

When was the last time you were the victim of the ol’ bait and switch?

Keep hope alive: there is in fact a CGI ‘Gatchaman’ movie in the works, due out later in 2009 from Imagi Animation Studios. It’s based on the original anime series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, rather than Battle of the Planets/G-Force, but that’s a good thing. Paul Dini is writing it, so chances are it’ll be pretty entertaining!

WTF?!?! what are they smoking over at Disney? That movie looks horrible. What a waste of money, and in this economy!

  • Elizabeth

WTF is right! That wasn’t the G-Force I remembered either. Is this what the smarty-pants in Hollywood like to call the “re-imagining of a classic” – cause if it is, it sucks like a Hoover.
I’m starting to think America can’t come up with an original idea – or we’re all too damn lazy to do it.

I saw a blurb about this at tribute.ca and thought “Whoa” (Zoltar was such a great Villian) but the minute I saw guinnea pigs my hopes were pummeled into crumbs.

?!? What the heck? No 7 zark 7?

Guinea pigs??? You have got to be kidding me. And I thought Speed racer was a horrible remake. This CAN’T work out well…..

  • Ryan

I totally thought it was a “Battle of the Planets” movie…then I saw a guinea pig and thought WTF and did not even watch it…

    that is just wrong!!!

WOW. G-Force (aka Gatchaman) was one of my favorite childhood cartoon series, up there with Robotech:Macross (rumor has it a movie is in the works) and other Japanese gems like Captain Future.
To see that the name’s been bastardized into some sort of sick Disney movie only serves to convince me that Disney is indeed evil.
As for the last bait and switch I got? The first Mummy. The ads had it looking like some kind of horror movie, so I pre-purchased tickets for the premiere. When I saw the movie, I was superbly upset to discover it was a cheeseball romantic comedy starring B-movie mainstay (as in he should have stayed there) Brendan friggin’ Frasier (I know it’s “Fraser” and misspelled his name on purpose). Upsetting indeed.

It’s like thinking you are about it eat an M&M and getting rabbit pellets instead.
I’m glad they aren’t touching Gotchaman. No matter what, they’d ruin it.

  • Ted

I think the last line of the trailer says it all: “A horrible crime against nature.”

  • Alan of Montreal

The exact same thing happened to me! But I thought something might be wrong when I saw the title, because I had heard the film was actually called Battle of the Planets, so G-Force threw me off. Lo and behold, Guinea Pigs! If I hear one more jive-talking animal, I think I’ll shoot myself.

    no, just no…

someone needs to stop Hollywood from glorifying rodents (Ratatouille, Tale of Despereaux, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Bolt, etc.) before children start bringing them home.

  • Chris

Wow, Guinea-Force? And they even threw in a “Pimp My Ride” reference. Way to stay current and hip with the kiddies. At least a lot of funny actors (Bill Nighy, Tracy Morgan, Will Arnett) will get a nice paycheck outta this.

If you ask me I think that the company who owns Gatchaman aka G-Force should sue because this Guinea Pig thing has nothing to do with the story at all. But then again if Disney can do Space Chimps… .

  • Mattie C

I don’t know, I have hope: I think the combo of Bruckheimer (the man CAN do action), Yeatman (the man CAN do vfx – gotta admit, those guinea pigs look pretty darn good) and a solid cast (Arnett, Morgan, Galifinakis, Nighy to name a few) has plenty of potential.

As an adult guinea pig fan (I have over 100!)I think its great to see piggies onscreen. The first Dr Doolittle, Bedtime Stories and now G Force. And I worked on an animated Australian Tropfest project that stars guinea pigs. Looking forward to seeing the animation work.

well, it’s gone from a must see to an it can wait for video (lol well nowadays dvd). I too had expectations of seeing G-force from my early cartoon days only to find these things…not bad but a disappointment …its like being hungry for something and ordering it at a resteraunt only to be told they’re out of it and could you order something else….its just not as….lol well I usually just get soda at that point but you know…in general a bummer.
