The Clear Eyes, Full Hearts Must List

Attention late adopters: tired of realizing critically acclaimed shows really are good while watching them on DVD long after they’ve been unceremoniously dumped by the networks? Make like my Must List and stream Friday Night Lights seasons 1 and 2 for free on Hulu before the third season begins airing on NBC next week. Catch up now and you can see The Best Show America Isn’t Watching (and The Best Show I Can’t Watch until Jan. 16 Because It’s Only on DirecTV) while there’s still a chance of a season 4! Seriously, though, FNL is awesome. It’ll always have a spot on my Must List, but it’s at the top this week because I’m getting psyched up for next week’s premiere. Watch the season 2 finale below, or start from the beginning at Hulu’s FNL page.

What’s at the top of your Must List this week, PopWatchers?List up to three items on your Must List from currentTV/movies/music/books/games/online. Don’t forget your e-mail address,in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline isThursday, Jan. 8, at 5 p.m. ET.

I don’t know that there’s ever been a week that FNL wasn’t on my Must List, but this week I’m all about “Commentary! The Musical” from my “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” DVD and “Beginner’s Greek” by James Collins.

I hate sports, know absolutely nothing about football, and love this show. If you’re turned off by the subject matter, give it a try. I’m glad I did (I hopped on board halfway through season one, and don’t have DirecTV so I’m exclted about seeing season 3 for the first time).

I’m pushing for The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons. Sheldon is possibly the most egotistical, literal, genius character ever to grace TV, and Jim Parsons’ comedic timing (especially with all those long monologues that he nails, every time!) is a thing to marvel at.
Also, Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face.” “Just Dance” is all fine and dandy, but “Poker Face” is where Lady GaGa brings it. The chorus is way more addictive, fun and repetitive than another Pop Princess’ song, and I just can’t stop playing it…

    1) “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” DVD: Awesome!!!!
    2) All-American Rejects cover of “Womanizer” by Britney Spears (Video on Yahoo): Strange, but intriguing.
    3) “Scrubs” (TV Show)-It’s back, baby! I’m happy to see it get a proper final season.

    FNL ROCKS!

  • Ryan B

    Meryl Streep in Doubt
Daredevil. The Must List is always good to throw in comic books once in a while, and there’s none better out right now.

  • Daniel

    – “The Walking Dead” Volume 9, by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard – After a bold, polarizing move made at the end of the previous volume, this new collection of Kirkman’s award-winning, postapocalyptic series sees our main character and his son running from the zombies after losing everybody they ever cared about.
    – Pineapple Express 2-Disc Unrated DVD
    – “Slumdog Millionaire” soundtrack – A R Rahman, who did the score for “Lagaan”, outdoes himself this time with the best film soundtrack of 2008.

Someone’s gonna say it so it might as well be me:
Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavilion is the year’s first great record and a VERY early threat for album of the year.
The TV Set- this movie is a couple years old, but I just caught it on tv and it is an excellently hilarious look at taking a tv show from pilot to pickup.

  • Carli

FNL should be on the Must List every week. It’s fantastic. I’ve had the privilege of watching on DirecTV this season and it’s been amazing. Get excited NBC watchers!

  • Kimi

Please, please watch FNL. If it gets cancelled I’m going to be so very angry.

1)Friday Night Lights Season 3 Premiere on January 16.
2)Gossip Girl completely defeating the sophmore slump

  • MSF

Battlestar Galactica webisodes, leading up to next week’s premier of season 4.5!

  • Keira

1)I HATE football but LOVE Friday Night Lights
    2) Battlestar Galactica (this show is sooo much more than just a show in space…It has one of the greatest cast on television of great actress/actors and WONDERFUL writers)
    3) Gossip Girl (because this show is sooo much more than just a teen drama. Definitely DIDNT go downhill in its second season unlike 95% shows on television)

    1. MI-5, from the UK, has started airing on PBS stations across the country. Like the early 24, with better characters. Starring an excellent cast, including Matthew Macfadyen, who is sensational. Episode 2 is up next week with one character meeting a nastier demise than you’re likely to see anywhere else on TV.
    2. Lost in Austen, airing on the Ovation Channel (274 on Directv). I don’t know what the Ovation Channel is, but I’m all over this cheeky time-traveling adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

  • CandyMaize

It’s a new release this week – ‘Plum Spooky’ by Janet Evanovich. I can’t wait to read it – I love the Stephanie Plum books.

  • CandyMaize

Liz – the timing of you mentioning MI-5 is a bit eerie. I just requested the Season 1 DVD set from my library. I’ve been seeing it promoted on the ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Torchwood’ DVD sets (that I’ve also been borrowing from my library) and it’s looked so good that I finally decided that I “had to” check it out.

  • tinytvfan

Carli, I totally agree! I just came here to thank Jean for highlighting one of the, (if not THE), best shows on television. Keep showing the love, EW!

  • j-nine

    FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!!!
Also, I’m hoping for wonderful things on Tom Cavanagh’s new show Trust Me (I was an ED fanatic). And, last but not least, season 2 of Breaking Bad.

  • Dan

“Spaceman” by The Killers. A month and a half after the album debuted and I still cannot get it out of my head…and that’s a good thing!

  • Josh

    1. Slumdog Millionaire- A touching and well written story told beautifully by Danny Boyle.
    2. Michael Sheen in Frost/Nixon- While everyone is raving about Langella as Nixon, no one seems to have noticed how well Sheen fills the loafers of the famous playboy.
    3. Winter Terlevision- The return of Lost, Burn Notice, Flight of the Conchords, and Scrubs this looks to be the best winter ever.

for anyone who has ever had an office job – Kenny Holcom on Funny or Die: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/d73176d77d/kenny-holcolms-i-cant-make-this-stuff-up-2-from-small0ry

  • palais

Another Jim Parsons is a comic genius girl right here, but this week, I’m all about Scrubs. I have been with this show every step of the way, and it reminded me last night with those back to back episodes that the show may be flawed, but it always gets it right in the end. And great swipe at NBC and Neilsen families, Bill Lawrence. The Tony Shaloub reference was just icing on the cake.

  • raven

-Scrubs is back!! And the final season looks like it’s gonna be really good!!
-Lady GaGa, who is finally getting the attention she deserves with her awsomely awsome single “Just Dance” being number 1 on Itunes and her second single “Poker Face” is climbing up those Itunes charts as well!

  • Kristen

The Ting Tings are playing in my car everyday.
Scrubs is back hooray! Plus the addition of Courteney Cox is fabulous, no one does funny neurotic quite like her.
Confessions of a Teen Idol and Rock of Love Bus make for – can’t believe I’m watching this yet can’t look away – TV heaven. I was wondering what I would do without Rock of Love Charm School but VH1 filled the void beautifully.

Right now, I’m loving the continued antics of Top Chef: New York. They’re letting TWO chefs go home tonight!
Video game wise, DC vs. Mortal Kombat is keeping me up at night.
Finally, OBAMAMANIA is officially a must in DC! With the upcomming inaugural, the city is filled to the brim with unlicensed Obama crap! My personal Must? My t-shirt with Martin Luther King shaking hands with Malcolm X, with Barack Obama’s face posted over Malcom X’s. Drop me a line if you want one as the guy on the corner seemed to have many…

  • Liz

CandyMaize – you won’t regret it. Phenomenal series.
And since I only listed 2, I’m going to go with Josh for my 3rd Must and say Frost/Nixon – great movie, great cast. Just wish they would actually release it into more than 4 theaters in NJ (literally…FOUR).

  • Anne

Friday Night Lights for sure! Keep writing about it so more people will watch. Best show you’ve never seen. You can watch it on nbc.com as well. On another note, grey’s anatomy used to be on my Must List, but now I can’t even be bothered by any of that nonsense.

  • Alex

I’m with you all the way on this Jean – Friday Night Lights will ALWAYS be on my Must List. Forever and ever.
Hope you keep writing about the show and recommending it coz it deserves to be seen. I’ve already converted countless friends to FNL-fandom.
Also on my Must List – the 2nd season of Damages. Killer show. Pun very much intended :)

Britney Spears’ Circus video. When she warbles “I’m like the ringleader, I call the shots,” I actually believe her. Brit hasn’t been this present or engaging since Toxic.
While we’re in the Britney vein, I’ve been addicted to various Brit covers on YouTube. Some faves:
    - Lily Allen’s slow, breathy take on ‘Womanizer’
    - The All American Rejects’ K-Fed-inserted version of ‘Womanizer’
    - Sia’s ‘Gimme More’ interpretation.
Thirdly, and I admittedly am extremely late in my admiration, but I can’t stop listening to Lykke Li’s Youth Novels album. After perusing several year-end lists, this humble but energetic gem stood out the most overall.
