VH1's '100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs': Rank the Top 10

Metallica_lLast week we asked you which anthems you expected and/or wanted to see on VH1’s 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. Well, today, to coincide with the net’s 10 p.m. ET unveiling of the top 20, we’ll conclude our festivities with another challenge: Rank the top 10, in order of oh-my-god-this-song-rocks-so-hard-iness. The fine folks at VH1 have revealed those 10 tunes exclusively to you, PopWatchers. Here they are, in alphabetical order:

• AC/DC’s "Back in Black"
• Aerosmith’s "Walk This Way"
• Black Sabbath’s "Paranoid"
• Guns N’ Roses’ "Welcome to the Jungle"
• Led Zeppelin’s "Whole Lotta Love"
• Metallica’s "Enter Sandman"
• Motörhead’s "Ace of Spades"
• Nirvana’s "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
• Van Halen’s "Runnin’ with the Devil"
• The Who’s "Won’t Get Fooled Again"

We know how we would arrange our list. (Hint: “Back in Black,” "Runnin’ with the Devil," and “Welcome to the Jungle,” you may proceed to the head of the class.) But who cares what we think? Give us your top 10, using these selections. (And yes, if you hate VH1’s picks, you also can make a list using hard rock songs of your choosing.)

    What??????? Nirvana? The Who? Motorhead?
Those are grunge, classic rock, and heavy metal, respectively!!!
Hard Rock is Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Extreme, Poison, Warrant, Ratt…
Sheesh. When VH1 screws it up, they really screw it up.

    • Aaron

It bugs me when people like you get over-technical about genre. Its all rock. It doesn’t need to be analyzed into 30 subgenera.

    • slash

how is bon jovi hard rock, they’re like hairband meets madonna

  • Mel

    1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
    2. Whole Lotta Love
    3. Won’t Get Fooled Again
    4. Paranoid
    5. Welcome to the Jungle
    6. Enter Sandman
    7. Back in Black
    8. Walk this Way
    9. Ace of Spades
    10. Runnin’ With the Devil

  • karen b

VH1 has messed this up entirely. Hard Rock is Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, Ratt, Van Halen, Motley Crue…
NOT classic rock, grunge, or heavy metal.

    • thomas e

karen b. listen to living on a prayer by bon jovi and shake your foundation by acdc and that should change your mind

  • RTA

    Who
    Led Zep
    AC/DC
    Aerosmith
    Van Halen
    Nirvana
    Black Sabbath
    Metallica
    G&R
    Motorhead

  • Jayel

karenb, honey, those are hair bands. There’s nothing wrong with them, but they’re not representative hard rock. Vh1’s list isn’t perfect – ‘Enter Sandman’ may be the most overrated hard rock song ever – but these are hard rock songs.

  • BellaFanatic

Ok. This is a Hard Rock article. I do love these bands, but I hate it for you people, Bon Jovi? Poison? Nirvana? NOT HARD ROCK people. Metallica, Pantera, AC/DC!!! Even Aerosmith? When did they become hard rock?

  • flea

O.K. I am not following the rules because this list is not so hot. What about Love Hurts, a few Heart songs, QUEEN!!! Agree with Zombie!!! Nirvana, WTF!

  • Jelana

Where the frak is Stairway to Heaven?

  • Lisa

The Wizard by Black Sabbath is probably the best heavy metal song ever. Well, anything by Sabbath (with Ozzy ONLY) is great. War Pigs, Iron Man, Fairies Wear Boots!

  • jp

10 motorhead – that song is terrible
    9 Guns n roses
    8 ac/dc
    7 led zeppelin
these three songs have been played out to the point they’re almost unlistenable
    6 aerosmith
    5 nirvana
    4 van halen
    3 metallica
    2 sabbath
    1 the who

  • jp

i’d categorize bon jovi as soft rock before i called them hard rock

  • Joe

“Ace of Spades”?, I wouldn’t put it in the top 20 let alone top ten. Where’s “Purple Haze”?, there’s too many other songs that could be in the top ten than “Ace of Spades”

  • seattle_girl

Get out of my head Dan Snierson. Top 3, in order:
    1. Back in Black
    2. Runnin’ with the Devil
    3. Welcome to the Jungle
After that, gets a little murkier:
    4. Whole Lotta Love
    5. Won’t Get Fooled Again
    6. Walk This Way
    7. Sub out Paranoid for Iron Man instead
    8. Enter Sandman
    9. Smells Like Teen Spirit
    10. Anything BUT Ace of Spades (I could go with Love Hurts instead)

  • Kyle

    1. Vicarious – Tool

4.) The Who- Won’t Get Fooled Again

    6.) Godsmack- Voodoo
    7.) Bad Company- Bad Company
    9.) Def Leppard- Foolin’
10.) Van Halen- Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love

  • tuneman

ha ha ha. the who and led zepplin are hard rock. They’re only considered classic rock by people too young to have been there the first time. Nirvana, god bless ‘em, were NEVER hard rock. Bon Jovi? No way.

  • Minutiae

“Enter Sandman” over “One” or “Master of Puppets?” Lame, VH1.

  • bub

Guns N Roses Welcome to the Jungle
    Nirvana Smells like Teen Spirit
    ACDC Back in Black

  • bub

Guns N Roses Welcome to the Jungle
    Nirvana Smells like Teen Spirit
    ACDC Back in Black

    • Sean

People act like we young people don’t know music lol. i know for sure that bon jovi is pop.
      1.Shoot To Thrill (AC/DC)
      2. Testify (Rage Against The Machine)
      3. Communication Breakdown (Zeppelin)
      4. November Rain (GNR)
      5. Limelight (Rush)
      Gets fuzzy after that

  • J’rome

It’s late. I’m tired. But, here’s a bit…realizing that some may not be considered ‘hard rock.’ Loved seeing NIN’s ‘Closer’ on a list here. Not a Van Halen fan.
    1. Sweet Child O’ Mine (G&R)
    2. Whole Lotta Love (Zep)
    3. Smoke On the Water (Deep Purple)
    4. More (Sisters of Mercy)
    5. She Sells Sanctuary (The Cult)
    6. Paranoid (Sabbath)
    7. Communication Breakdown (Zep)
    8. 2+2 (Bob Seger System–someone should cover this hard–tough to find, on YouTube though)
    9. Train Kept a Rollin’ (Aero)
    10. Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress (The Hollies…probably not hard rock, but it rocks pretty hard)

  • Lisztes

Bon Jovi is hard rock ??? ROTFL! We might argue whether they are soft rock or guitar pop, but “Hard Rock”?? Pathetic.

  • garciamomma

    1. Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle
    2. Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”
    3.Metallica’s “Enter Sandman
    4.Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”
    5. AC/DC’s “Back in Black
    6.The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again
    8.Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”
    9.Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades”
    10.Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
Ace of Spades is for hardcore metal people, and as much as I LOVE Smells like Teen Spirit, it IS grunge and doesnt belong in the top ten in this instance.
This list was scientifically rated strictly on how bad a headache I get from thrashing my head while listening to these songs.

1-Killing in the name-Rage against the machine
    2-Velvet Revolver-Slither
    3-Metallica-Enter Sandman

    6-Black Stone Cherry-Blind Man
    7-Wolfmother-joker& The Thief
    8-Guns N’ roses-Paradise City
    9-Led Zeppelin-Kashmir
    10-Deep Purple-Smoke On The Water

  • Eric

Prediction on how VH1 will rank them:
    1. Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle”
    2. AC/DC’s “Back in Black”
    3. Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”
    4. Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”
    5. Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
    6. Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades”
    7. Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”
    8. Van Halen’s “Runnin’ with the Devil”
    9. Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”
    10. The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again”
How I would rank these 10:
    1. Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”
    2. Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”
    3. Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle”
    4. AC/DC’s “Back in Black”
    5. Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
The rest wouldn’t even be on my top ten list.

  • C.c.

No1 should be Soundgarden-Black hole sun!
    No2 Led Zeppelin!
Pearl jam, Alice in chains and Nirvana would rpobably complete my top 5. Now as for the rest, I can’t say.
