Who’da thunk staying home watching TV on New Year’s Eve would be so moderately entertaining? I watched a bit of the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (so is that it? is Dick Clark retiring?), but it was the Anderson Cooper-Kathy Griffin festivities on CNN that kept me up past midnight — CHICAGO time. For better or worse, they had a refreshing element of complete unpredictablity. Here are the highlights:
- Kathy Griffin’s on-air, "is this mike still on?" response to one of her many Times Square hecklers (NSFW clip below). You just know somewhere an exasperated old man in a suit is shaking his head saying, "I TOLD them she was too smutty…"
- Kathy queries Anderson, "What are you wearing?" and he pretends he doesn’t understand the question even though he fights her off when she tries to remove the tape covering the label on his fitted coat.
- Anderson admits he can’t properly pronounce double Ts, especially embarrassing as he lives in "Manhadden."
- During his live, upside-down-stripper booty-smacking-performance, Lil Wayne gives a "shout out to Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin" (which Anderson and Kathy abruptly interrupt before he is finished — seven second delay perhaps?).
- Anderson throws down a challenge to Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann, saying he could "take" both of them in an arm wrestle.
- Sean Callebs dislikes New Orleans on New Year’s, likes chucking beads at the "belligerent" Bourbon Street masses.
- Coolio: "I think at the end of the day I’m gonna go down as one of the top 10 performers ever to live. In hip hop." He just freaks me out.
Anyone else catch this? What else was on last night? And what did Lil Wayne have to say to Anderson and Kathy?

Yeah, Kathy and Anderson were entertaining alright — entertainingly embarassing! I’m sure Kathy turned more than a few heads with her “dicks” comment … if there was a 7 second delay, don’t ya think they would have caught that?! Hello, Kathy… you’re on LIVE television and there are millions of people watching… maybe you might want to be sure the live feed has stopped before you mouth off… Overall, however, Kathy and Anderson are cute, but their banter was ridiculous and mostly irrelevant to the new year’s eve festivities. Bottom line, they were palatable, but CNN’s coverage was terrible; again, millions of people are watching and all we get is footage of Times Square emptying out after the ball has dropped, people standing around not doing much of anything on Bourbon St and in Florida, and a bunch of bands most people have never heard of in a bunch of towns no one wants to visit! Sure, that’s cutting edge, CNN! Yeah right. Ok, I’ll step off my soap box. Happy New Year!

Kathy Griffin would be better off in a job where “slut like” remarks are the norm, possibly a porn telephone line could use her kind of dialog, but not on CNN, where millions of people are enjoying watching New Year with their children. I don’t have any problem with slutty comments in the right kind of program – but get a life Kathy you’re not really cute on the air – try being professional like Anderson.
Before this I liked both kathy and anderson… now I LOVE them… Its goos to see Anderson thrown off his guard a bit. And CNN is cable so they get more leeway on the obsenities they can throw out… But if the FCC does manage to somehow slap CNN with a fine it couldn’t touch the absolute hilarity of the broadcast. I never thought I would laugh so damn hard while watching CNN. Great Job Kathy and Anderson! Ridiculous, Raunchy, Obnoxious, senseless and the absolute perfect way to get rid of 2008 and ring in a new year that will hopefully be filled with much more humor than 2008.
Would it be rude to ask Kathy Griffin if she is the love child of Joan Rivers AND Don Rickles? (for your amusement and compliment ONLY). Also, does Anderson Cooper prefer New Year’s in N.O.? Shall we expect him at “Oceana” next New Year’s Eve here? (We’ll be WAITING…no, just kidding…W-E-L-L half-way).
Kathy/Anderson are comedy GOLD. He is the perfect uh… “straight man” to her hilarity. I hope this becomes an annual tradition on CNN.
Get a life Stuart Duncan. If you want family friendly programming don’t watch a known raunchy comic for God’s sake. Turn on ABC. They’re just broadcasting Dick Clark in a coma.

Oh my gosh Kathy said “dicks” on national TV at about 12:50 in the morning. All I can say is go for it girl and just be yourself in spite of what others may say. I enjoyed Anderson and Kathy and I can see that they enjoyed it as well.

I love AC and Kathy. It was wonderful to see Anderson really laugh. Anderson you can take on some of the most important people in the world, but at times, Kathy rendered you speachless. You two have great chimistry, hope this becomes an annual New Years event. What fun tonight.. you were great together. Hey, we all know that you never know what to expext from Ms Griffin, thats why we love her. She dares to say what we all think, but are too afraid to say.
There are class Americans who make us proud, people like Anderson Cooper. The world is now a Global society and you represent something bigger than the last 8 years and are perfect in our eyes overseas. Something the whole world relates to.
The lady you shared the stage with tonight was a ahame to all Americans and complete embarrassment. She is uneducated or drunk at best.

Anderson “The Party Pooper” Cooper! He was awful IMHO, he wasn’t witty nor professional, he hardly looked at the camera, which in turn incited Kathy to be an exaggerated unapologetic version of herself and I LOVE her. Really, the whole event wasn’t well designed, like said above, the footage was unfocused and random, A & K didn’t have rapor this year. Oh well…maybe this is a sign for 2009? Hope NOT!

Since Mr Clark no longer does the GREATEST show that ever was on New Years (can’t stand Ryan Seacrest), the only one I watch and enjoy IS Anderson & Kathy

The entire crowd & overall atmosphere in T. Square last night was really quiet & subdued IMHO
That was THE smallest crowd & the quietest I can remember in almost 40 years of watching the ball drop.
Yes it was cold BUT I’ve watched Dick Clark there when it was well BELOW zero & much colder and there were always HUGE crowds & they were really reveling
Those few that were there last night seemed so down & it was just really depressing to watch IMHO

God I love the duo! But I was on the edge of my seat every time Kathy would say something raunchy because I would be thinking: “Oh, I think this is when CNN lets her go for good.” That comment about the dick probably proved it… But then again, this is freakin’ CNN! This isn’t Broadcast Network so I hope there was some leeway for the FCC. But what sad deprived kid would be watching New Year’s Coverage on CNN anyway?
I love Anderson for being so “by the books” and being a secret Reality Whore like any gay.
And I love Kathy for those out of the blue jokes and getting to open up Anderson a lot more.
I hope they do this again next year! God knows I wouldn’t have watched CNN’s snorefest coverage without Kathy to liven things up!

I thought Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper were just terrible. She is not funny at all and he is boring. I had Fox on and thought they were much more exciting. At least they were working together. CNN just doesn’t get it !!
this show was GREAT!! I have never been so entertained on new years eve! If Kathy is not with AC next year, I will be asleep by 10. Her comments about the London reporter were priceless!!
All you that got your panties in a wad, there were other stations you could watch that were purely boring and exactly what you’d have liked. AC and KG were for those of us tired of scripts and platitudes. And quite frankly, I’ve heard “dick” on network TV recently without anyone getting the vapors. So bite it.
I can’t believe that CNN hired that piece of trash Kathy Griffin two years in a row. She totally turned me off last year and I didn’t watch her this year. Someone needs to set her to the curb.
Listening to K. Griffin’s voice is like listening to 300 live chickens being submerged slowly into boiling water. What a hideous racket. No wonder AC looked like he had more fun covering Katrina and Kosovo.
I tuned in for a bit…I’ll take this duo compared to what else was out there. I like that CNN is willing to be different…why else would anyone of turned in? I’d never of even thought to tune into CNN for New Years unless I heard she was on.
She isn’t my favorite comedian but she does make me laugh…lighten up folks…not every girl has to be so proper. She isn’t famous for being perfect or proper all the time…this is her job…she’s obviously decent at it or she wouldn’t still be in this business. If she appalls you, guess what, that’s the whole point. She “ain’t” in the poor house.
