Zune 30s all freezing up at once. Ack! Aliens!

Categories: Sci-Fi, Tech

Zune30_lThe reports that all of the world’s 30 GB Zune MP3 players have at once suddenly frozen up seem to be true. Internet message boards, including the one on the Zune website, are filled with panicky users wondering how to fix their Microsoft device once it seizes on the boot screen. So far, nothing is working. Rumors are flying. Is it a strange Y2K9 thing? Unlikely, given that the mass freezes occurred before the new year. Perhaps Apple has spread a virus to kill all of the Zunes? Also unlikely, given that the Zune doesn’t pose a serious threat to the iPod’s dominance. As difficult as it is to face, there’s just one terrifying explanation that we’ll all have to bring ourselves to face: Aliens have frozen our planet’s Zunes and will use them to blackmail Bill Gates into apologizing for Windows Vista.

UPDATE: Reports are now coming in that the aliens have also taken control of the 80 GB models.

Any Zuners out there heading into New Year’s Eve without their digital tunes? Anyone figure out a solution yet? Is there a better explanation than the alien one?

I feel really sorry for all the people with this problem, but in my case, my Zune 30 was stolen from me about six months ago, and I cannot avoid the feeling of poetic justice in this glitch.

    FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow’s are all wrong.
This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max goes to the drive-in to get ribs and when the ribs are served they are so big the car tips over.

    aliens have seized, not “ceased”

  • lisa

    Yep. I am a victim of Y2k

  • Anonymous

ceased – to cause to come to an end
seized – to attack or overcome, to fail to operate
    Learn the difference

My Zune just went on the blink this morning. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you!

  • Linda

I’m one of the unlucky ones with the 30 and it happened just like everyone else’s – this puppy wasn’t free or cheap, and neither is my membership I pay to rent my songs…

  • bj

maybe a zune is a POS and thats reason enough

  • Sarah

I am also an unfortunate victim. This is a tragedy. I know a DJ who uses two Zunes for work and has a gig tonight… That is really going to suck.

  • John

    WHY!!!! HOW!!!! Im musicless!! :(

  • jess

microsoft is really pissing people off. including myself. watch as they crumble. way to start the new year MS

  • Daniel

    What’s a Zune :)

  • Scott

Yeah, mine is doing the same thing too. Which sucks because I love my Zune and have had it forever and it’s never done anything like this before. So now I have the Zune Screen of Death. :(

  • hannah

poop. the world is coming to an end.

  • bb

  • D J

I have setup a conference bridge for those that want to discuss this further.
I am in queue with MS suppport at this time.
Call 219 509 8333 enter pin code 186420 to join the conference.
Please contribute by discussing what you where doing before it locked up and also if you have the 30 or 80 gig.
Also what version software you are using.

tried to power mine up this morning at 6:30am EST got the stuck on zune splash screen.

  • ErinJMT

I’m afraid to turn on my Zune! Is it just 30 and 80 GB?

  • Kate

This happened to me as well! WTF!!! I have been on hold with customer support for over an hour. Need this resolved for tonight!

  • Juliana

I called customer service at 1-877-438-9863 their instructions were to turn on and off locking device switch located on the top of the zune player. That did reboot the device. Good luck everyone.

  • Scott

Originally it was thought only to be the 30gb, but I’ve seen a couple people posting on zune.net who said their 80gb’s are doing it too. So I think it’s just the 30 and 80.

  • TMB

fabulous. glad i have an iPod.

  • Betz

Good News is I am not ALONE!!
I stayed up all morning trying to get it to work and nothing is happening!!! What is going on???

  • scott eagle

    Mine also

  • Big B

I just turned mine on and I got the problem too. HELLLP!!!

  • Kate

I just spoke with customer service (after an hour on hold!) and they are working on the problem and at this time do not know how to resolve it. If you registered your device, I recommend that you call and get a case number. Hopefully they will make good on this problem as most everyone’s warranties have expired. Thanks to DJ as well for setting up the conference call!

Fixed one of mine, gonna wait on the other.
“Your zune will need a “hard reset.”
To do this, use a small screwdriver to pop off the plastic shielding where the zune cable plugs into and remove the two screws on either side of the plug. Next pop the cover off and locate the battery plug at the top left corner of the zune, using your screw driver, pop the cable connection half way off, and do this to the other plug on the right side. Wait 3 seconds, then push down the right connector and then the left battery connecter. Your zune should start up immediately. Press the backing of the zune down (make sure headphone jack is aligned) and put the screws and cover back in place.
It’s an easy process but if you’re unsure don’t attempt it if you think you’ll screw it or something. :)
Not pretty, but it might help those of you who have this problem.

  • Kate

The hard reset does not work! Confirmed with Microsoft! You may not want to try and take your Zune apart. Sorry bb.

  • Kate

P.S. – I have been told that once you plug the Zune back in to the computer the problem will happen again due to the clock reset.
