Every holiday season, I weep quiet tears when I listen to Judy Garland’s "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." And yet every holiday season, I put myself through the agony–and ecstasy–of it approximately 4,294 times. Guess I enjoy some pain during an otherwise jolly time of the year. This is one song that should never be performed by anyone else, especially if your name is Christina Aguilera. Judy Garland is absolute perfection.

For me she is the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. You take Christina Aguilera, who when she sings this sounds as if she’s just out to prove how many high notes she can hit, and compare it to the beauty, purity and emotion of Garland’s performance. This is what it’s all about. Love Judy Garland forever! Merry Christmas everybody!
This truly is the saddest Christmas song ever. Nothing else even come close. It’s also my favorite holiday song, which is weird considering it makes me incredibly sad.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is my favorite seasonal song and this clip is the reason why. She is absolutely beautiful and puts so much emotion into a song of which very few people really listen to the lyrics. Perfectly melancholy, I would say.
This is my favorite Christmas song of all time from one of my favorite movies of all time. Like you I play it endlessly during the Season. Judy’s is certainly the definitive performance, never to be beaten, but Barbra’s comes a close second for me. (I listened to Christina A’s version embedded in your video. The melisma is horrifying, the change of tune ridiculous.)
Layers upon layers of awesomeness. First, is JG not the most gorgeous woman ever? Is that little girl rocking some REAL tears? What’s going on with the spooky monkey music box? This song is the best because it captures the anti-Hallmark truth that Christmas is one of the most wistful and melancholy times of year for most adult people. Goodbye, childhood magic! But the line, “we all will be together” always gets me when I look around at our friends during our annual Xmas party. That’s what it’s all about, ya’ll.
It is a very sad song. That said the EW article about the hisory of the song, was probably one of the more interesting articles I have read in the magazine, and is still memorable even years later.
