Baz Luhrmann's 'Great Gatsby': Good idea?

Tags: , , , Movies

Greatgatsbybaz_lIt looks like writer-director Baz Luhrmann (Australia, Moulin Rouge) hasn’t kept up with his Entourage queue (but really, who could blame him?), otherwise he’d know Martin Scorsese is already working on a film adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, starring the washed-up Vincent Chase. But just as there’s room in Hollywood for a zillion big screen Wyatt Earps, there will always be room for another Gatsby (even if one of them actually is fake), which is why the Aussie’s next project will "definitely" be a redux of the literary classic, reports Nikki Finke.

Now, I haven’t seen Luhrmann’s recent box-office disappointment, Australia, so I can’t join in the it’s-awful-no-it’s-great debate, but on the merits of his last literary reimagining (Romeo & Juliet), I think he’s up for the task. But how do you feel, PopWatchers? Vote in our poll below and tell us whether you think Luhrmann should be the next one to bring Nick Carraway, Daisy Buchanan, and Jay Gatsby to the big screen. (It’s been done several times before, most notably—or not so notably—in 1974 starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.) Also, who would you cast in the starring roles? (I’m loving Finke’s suggestion of James Marsden for Nick.)

    Daisy – Naomi Watts

Loved Australia. Loved Moulin Rouge! I’ll see what ever Baz makes. And if Nicole Kidman’s in it I’ll be there opening day.

  • Nick

    Ryan Gosling for Nick Carraway
    Rebecca Hall for Daisy
    Ewan McGregor for Gatsby

I could definitely see Naomi Watts as daisy, but I’m curious- who would you guys cast as Jordan? I’m having a hard time picturing anyone.

  • M

    Neil Patrick Harris as Gatsby

I could see Scarlett Johansson as Jordan; she’s bllsy enough, she’s got the moxie needed for that part.

Call me crazy, but for some reason, if this gets made, I’d really like to see it with American actors in the major parts. Gatsby is such a quintessentially American story; it seems odd to give Australians, Brits, Scots, etc., the main parts, and have them try to fake their way through somewhat tough Long-Island-in-the-20′s accents (I love Ewan McGregor, but you’ve gotta admit that he does a TERRIBLE American accent). The Harry Potter movies are adamant about using only British actors; I feel like this should be the same type of thing.

    Daisy- Racheal McAdams
    Gatsby- Dominic Cooper
    Nick- Lee Pace

NO!!!! Baz Lurhmann directs without nuance or subtlety. he’ll butcher the novel.

When I saw Scorsese on Entourage I thought him doing a modern version of the Great Gatsby would be a great idea if it were real. I hope Luhrmann’s is set in the modern day.

I’ve been very unsatisfied with the past Daisys (Daisies?) None of them have been able to capture the character’s ability to enchant/repel at the same time. However, Rachel McAdams is the best young actress out there, so I think she could certainly pull off Daisy. And as much as I hate to admit it, Keira Knightley is good at that whole desirable-wealthy-lady, as she played exactly that in Atonement.
I think it’d be better to cast an unknown for Jordan. Too many stars in one movie can be distracting. I think Amy Adams could be good, however. She’s good at being “blithe” one moment and rather cold-shoulder the next.
Seriously, enough with the only-Americans rubbish. Gone With the Wind, for example. Viven Leigh was English, and she WAS Scarlett O’Hara. Though I see your point; if you already know the actor’s British, then it can be again, distracting. Unless it’s someone like Christian Bale, who by now seems more American than British.

I love the idea of Baz Luhrmann making this movie. He’ll put a fantastical, romantic twist on the plot. Some people may not enjoy that, but I can really see him capturing the endless longing of Gatsby and the whirlwind, wreckless lifestyle of the upper class in the roaring twenties. Can’t you see it?

“The Great Gatsby” is one of my favorite novels, so I’m really excited to see what Luhrmann cooks up for this one.
For Daisy I’d really like to see Amy Adams (though the suggestion of Rachel McAdams is good, too). As for Gatsby, I think that James McAvoy could be a possibility. And, for some reason, I think David Tennant could make a good Nick. Tom and Jordan (and George and Myrtle, too) are a bit harder for me to pinpoint who I’d want to play them.
I have no problem with British actors/actresses playing the roles. I mean, in the last adaptation of “Gatsby” Toby Stephens, a British actor, played Gatsby. Whether or not it was good is up for you to decide (I, for one, didn’t mind it). When it comes down to it, all I want are some good actors.

He may be a bit old for the part, but I think someone like Jon Hamm for Tom would be great.
