'Lost': The teases continue...but do you REALLY want to know?

I’ve resisted commenting on the teases ABC is doling out these days about the new season of Lost, such as this one:

My dilemma about this clip–the second such clip from the season premiere of Lost leaked to fans via the Web–is simply this: I DON’T WANNA KNOW! I’ve been SOOOOO good about keeping myself spoiler free about the upcoming season. I’ve waited eight months. I’ve been very disciplined about not peeking at the places where you can peek to find stuff out. I now want to seal the deal and save for myself an utterly pure, un-predigested experience. So I’m not going to look! You can’t make me! Even if you paid me money and officially make it my job….

Oh, wait.

Yeah, it’s really cool. There’s great economy to it. I love how it gives us a small, forward-moving bit of story that also recaps essential info from last season and sets the stakes for this season–but also evokes emotional character ideas, too. Ben’s sense of mission; Jack’s need for redemption. And I dig the whole idea of Ben now serving as Jack’s tailor. Did he seriously go out and buy him a suit? Why? And, as always, Michael Emerson’s line readings continue to do the show endless favors in terms of imbuing it with mysteries and winky giggles. How do we make sense of that kicker, "Then I guess we’ll never know." Should we be suspicious? Does Ben know more than what he’s telling, as is usually the case? Or is this some coy wink at the audience? After all, Jack and Ben may persist in cluelessness about what happened to the castaways on the Island following the departure of the Oceanic 6–but we won’t. All signs point to a narrative that toggles between the O6’s efforts to get back to Where’ditgo? Isle and the remaining castaways’ continuing struggle to survive in their weird environs.

The above clip was first released via an official communication from executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof to participants in a Lost alternate reality game which recently had to be downsized/canceled altogether (I’m not sure which, to be honest) due to budget cutbacks attributed to the sucky economy. To make it up to fans who had invested time and energy into the ARG, the producers have been hooking them up with cool content, including first dibs on seeing scenes from the new season and other cool tidbits every Lost fan should know. For example, Cuse and Lindelof revealed that Ben will be seen reading James Joyce’s Ulysses this season, suggesting the book has important resonance for the series. Even more provocative, the producers offered a glimpse at the logo for a new Dharma Initiative station (it looks like a lighthouse; paging Virginia Woolf?) and disclosed some crucial intel about Smokey the Monster: They confirmed the Island’s "security system" PREDATES the Dharma. So for all y’all who have theories that Dharma invented old Smokey–back to your drawing board!

I have been counting down the days, beginning at 115 until “Lost” returns to the TV.Today marks 36 more days until “Lost.” I can’t wait!…the teaser leads me to believe that the audience will always find Ben two-faced; never knowing quite sure whether to trust him or not.I lean to the not trusting side because I’ve always felt Ben is foremost only out for himself.
The puzzle I would like resolved this 5th season is if Sun’s father is connected to Charles Widmore, & if so, how? & I think Hurley finally used his lottery winnings by giving the $ to Sun so that she could buy into her father’s business & gain power that will help all Oceanic 6-ers.Thus, it makes Hurley very happy & at peace…the lottery he won is not a cursed event that he thought brought him bad luck. & one more puzzle I want resolved…is Chas. Widmore captain of The Black Rock? & one more is Claire dead or alive? & one more is Jin dead or alive? Oh heck, I want a lot of “Lost” puzzles resolved this season.

“Lost” is one series that I don’t mind teasers for because they are usually so cryptic that they fail to truly give away any secrets at all. Not once have I regretted seeing a clip like this one when it comes to this incredible show. All this one does is heighten my anticipation for another fantastic season.

Like you, Doc Jensen, I’ve been trying desperately to avoid spoilers, etc., about the new season because I think that part of the experience is to let the mystery unravel in its own good time. However, when Lindeloff/Cuse release things like this I do allow myself to watch them because I trust them as story-tellers to tease, not reveal, and so far they’ve done a good job of that. I have no idea what Season Five is going to bring, and for me, that is the adventure. I am SO looking forward to reading your theories and recaps once the new season starts, mostly because we seem to have been aligned on many of our ideas in the past. The next five weeks are going to crawl…

I agree that these clips don’t ruin anything. They just increase my obsession for the new season. I can’t wait til January for weekly Doc Jensens! I got to meet him in my hotel during Comic-Con and he was really nice.

instead of ben withholding info from jack about what happened to the castaways maybe locke told jack not to mention anything to ben knowing his double-crossing nature

Michael Emerson is absolutely brilliant on this show. When he was first introduced I wasn’t sure I liked him, but he grew into such a fantastic part of the show so quickly. He is always spot on and just wonderful.
I agree with you all. When the fellas release one of these I’ll watch. I need to satisfy my LOST appetite with something. and these little clips are perfect. Just enough to get me amped up on mystery, ambiguity, tension, etc.

I’m definitely spoiler-phobic, but these teases don’t count – they’re official advertising! So psyched for the season to start soon. Now as long as SAG doesn’t strike and get another season of Lost all messed up…

  • td

I love it. And yes, Emerson really is the best thing about the show now. I just hope they stop killing people off, and possible un-kill a few (Jin? Locke?). If you look at the original cast and the cast now, they’ve really wiped out a pretty good portion of the group.
Also curious that in this preview clip there is no mention of Walt. Does he not have to return to the island?

  • Rob Grizzly

Damn! I didn’t watch the clip, and won’t plan on watching any- I don’t think anyone is more spoiler-phobic than me when it comes to LOST. I don’t read a word of any of EW’s season 5 updates.

  • Anonymous

I got the feeling that Jack was holding out on Ben. Jack knows more then he’s letting on and Ben knows that.

  • Laura

No clips for me please. I don’t mind certain kinds of spoilers-the ones that don’t give away much at all but leave you that even more excited to watch! I can’t for season five! Season four really brought things back! I have so many theories in my head . . .

  • Esther Greenwood

This is pure speculation on my part, but it could be spoiler-ific, so don’t read further if you don’t want to hear: ***My big question is, if they’re all going back to the Island, then how will they “never know” what happened after the O6+Ben left? Obviously if they go back to the island post-dead Locke, the lostways would tell the what happened, So does that mean going back to the Island requires time travel? Time travel could be a way of bringing the dead back to life, but then there’s the question of going back to the island at a time when the O6 are already gone (otherwise they’re would be duplicates, right? I haven’t watched enough Sci-Fi stuff to fully comprehend the issues time travel creates)).***

You’re right RTA thats all it does for my hype of the new season also. There’s this and that going around about how the show will be like this season i just know that there is going to be a new twist on the flashback/flashforward part of the show!! Jan.21st!!!

  • Jeff

I dont think Hurley gave Sun the money. Remember the copmany was bought out from money from 5 different bank accounts. Wonder which one of the 6 didn’t give Sun their settlement money?
