So I’m watching last night’s Chuck–just a little while ago, as I’m still recovering from the mid-season finale of Heroes–and, in case you missed it, the episode involves a hostage crisis at the Buy More. And who should be the cop in charge of the scene but Sgt. Al Powell. You know, the portly, twinkie-loving cop from Die Hard. And not an Al Powell-type–they got Reginald VelJohnson to reprise the role.
It’s not quite as cool as when Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury popped up at the end of Iron Man, but cool nonetheless. Man, I just love it when my pop-cultural universes collide.

YESSS!!! “DIE HARD”! (aka, “Ceballos Revisionist Pick for Best Picture of 1988).
If only Paul Gleason had still been around to play Dwayne T. Robinson.
Seriously?! That’s much cooler than SLJ showing up at the end of “Iron Man.” This news actually makes me want to start watching “Chuck”.
And a nod to Groundhog Day too!
Ned? Ned Ryerson? Is that you?
Was it just my faulty memory or weren’t there quite a few lines from Die Hard in there…?
There was also the reference to the “Nakatomi Building” that Chuck, Sarah and her dad were selling to the Saudi prince a week ago…
What about the name of Tony Hale’s Character – Emmitt Milbarge? “Spies Like Us” (Emmitt Fitzhume and Austin Milbarge). Greatest 80′s spy farce!!!!
In last week’s episode, Sarah’s dad was attempting to “sell” the “Nakamichi Plaza” building, which sounds a whole lot like Die Hard’s equally fictional “Nakatomi Plaza.” Each week Chuck is full of these easter eggs, which is one of the many reasons I love the show.
There was also the chase scene amid the christmas trees, ala Lethal Weapon too. Loved Chuck last night!!!!!
Was that Michael Rooker too??
I admit to being a bad girl – I was squealing over Mr. Winslow being Big Mike’s cousin. (Hey, Mr. Winslow was a cop too!)
I agree with Arsenior Billingham…this is at least 15 times cooler than Samuel L. Jackson’s cameo in “Iron Man.”
I mean, it was ok, but, after waiting for ALL the credits to roll, I was left with a feeling of “Huh, ok” after Fury showed up. I thought Downey Jr’s scene at the end of “The Incredible Hulk” was cooler.
Yet another reason why Chuck is easily the best show on TV right now – at least until Lost comes back, that is… Excellent episode last night! I loved the Die Hard parody. My girlfriend didn’t get it at first, but for me it was an hour of television gold! My favourite Christmas movie has morphed into my favourite Christmas episode of a show EVER!!!

Quick question fellow “Die Hard” fans:
I’ve been trying to get my girlfriend to watch “Die Hard” for a while. She’s super cool (and LOVES Alan Rickman), but just has no desire to watch any action movies…
Will she break up with me if I try to pass “Die Hard” off as a Christmas movie?
He even ate a twinkie! Chuck rocks!
