Golden Globe nods: The TV category snubs

Huh? Alan Ball’s blood-thinner rookie vampire series True Blood gets a nod over the final, terrific season of The Wire? True Blood will be dribbling on for years, I’m sure — couldn’t the Globes have given The Wire some credit for both this season and its enduring legacy?

Both Weeds and Entourage have had uneven seasons at best; me, I’d havegone with Samantha Who? (hey, funnier than you think) or even better — dosome channel-surfing, Globe-trotters! — Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Debra Messing, The Starter Wife
Mary Louise-Parker, Weeds

Sorry: any round-up of TV-comedy actresses that doesn’t include Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ (pictured) continuing slapstick brilliance in The New Adventures of Old Christine is shameful. I mean, I like Debra Messing —  but in The Starter Wife? This was like a we-loved-her-in-Will-&-Grace gimme-nomination.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Kevin Connolly, Entourage
David Duchovny, Californication
Tony Shalhoub, Monk

The Globes are known for being more adventurous and more willing to acknowledge newcomers quicker than the Emmys, so wouldn’t it have been better if, instead of giving Tony Shaloub his umpteenth Monk nomination, they nominated Jim Parons, the brilliant dweeb in Big Bang Theory?

Your turn, PopWatchers: Tell us who else got snubbed in this morning’s Golden Globes small-screen nominations? Then head over to our Oscar Watch blog for Dave Karger’s reaction to the movie category nominees.

And of course Supernatural gets snubbed again. Have they seen Jensen Ackles act? Obviously not, the above performances have nothing on him.

  • PeterBilt The Nature Boy

Dude, dont worry. The Wire might get something next year around emmy time right? Bueller? Maybe I dont know what i’m talking about. I also agree about Shaloub. Geez. How many nom’s can this dude get? I dont know one person that watches that show. Not that that’s the main reason for someone getting a nomination. But seriously. Parson’s on Big Bang and the show in general needs some bloody recognition in this peace.

Huh, they shouldn’t nominate True Blood because it will be around for years! Are you an idiot? (Rhetorical) Using that logic , they should have handed the Presidency to Mc Cain because Obama will be around for a while.

  • Smoochie

    And the winner is….Alec Baldwin:)

  • Lyn

USA has some darn good shows. Burn Notice, Psych? Both are hilarious, Dule Hill and Bruce Campbell?

  • Kyle

no “LOST” love??????? and am very happy w/ January Jones & Jon Hamm’s noms, but no supporting nods for Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, or even Christina Hendricks??? lawd

  • BBT

    Yes – Jim Parsons!

  • MikeNJD

Lost. Where the heck is Lost?!? It had its best season since Season 1, and no love? I enjoyed True Blood, but it is NO Lost. And what about Henry Ian Cusick and Michael Emerson? This is f-ed up.

The Globes are insignificant. First of all Desperate Housewives is experiencing the best season since the first and should have received a nod. Also Marcia Cross deserved a nod for her wonderful portrayl of the transformation Bree undergoes from home maker into the next Martha Stewart. Also Brothers and Sisters deservered best TV drama. But hey let’s give it to 30 Rock. If that show was so good more people would probably watch it. Tina and Alec are annoying and are the reason I would rather pluck out my eyes then watch that.

Where’s the nomination for HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. That show is sooo underrated. If it didn’t have a laugh track it would be considered as smart and cutting edge as THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK (which I also love!).

As long as “Grey’s Anatomy” is in no way represented, I’m happy. It used to be awesome. Now it sucks booty. Maybe the lack of Golden Globe love will slap Shonda Rhimes to her senses.

  • JJ

What about John Krasnski and Angela Kinsey for THE OFFICE and Vanessa Williams for UGLY BETTY??

Oh, no! I don’t see anything for Jane Krakowski or Tracey Morgan for 30 ROCK? Why do they get no attention?

  • Mike

What about The Shield? Michael Chiklis and Walton Goggins?

  • CandyMaize

I’m always disappointed when I see these lists and Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) is not included. I don’t even have the words to describe just how great he is .. but clearly not enough people have seen him on-screen.

  • Steph

The Big Bang Theory needs waaay more recognition. It’s such a funny show!

  • Anonymous

Vanessa Williams as usual, I am so used to it now I didn’t boil with rage like last year!

  • maryb

No Lost or The Wire? Were the plots too complicated?

  • laylagalise

Disappointed but not surprised that they ignored the brilliance of ‘The Wire.’ The Golden Globes could have given themselves a little bit of relevance with some sort of ‘Wire’ recognition, but I guess they’re happy being completely irrelevant. And nothing for the amazing ‘Generation Kill’? That was shocking. I thought these award shows just didn’t like amazing television that is realistic, complex, brilliantly-acted and intelligent that featured a large number of African-American in the title roles– Turns out they just have a problem with realistic, complex, brilliantly-acted and intelligent television period.

Maybe I’ve just been watching award shows for so long that snubs just don’t bother me anymore. I’ve accepted the fact that shows like FNL and The Wire don’t get nominated and moved on. So frankly, when I see nominations these days I just get excited by the surprises. The Globes could have nominated Boston Legal in every category this year and I wouldn’t have cared so long as Januray Jones got a nomination. Betty was amazing this season on Mad Men, and there is something about January Jones on screen, like she literally glows.

  • Rahul

What about ‘Lost’? That was the best season of the show since the first (which won the Golden Globe that year). Also, if the Golden Globes are supposed to be adventurous in their nominations, then where’s the love for ‘The Wire’ or ‘Battlestar Galactica’? Frak me.

  • Huh?

Why am I suprised that they didn’t show any love for DIRTY SEXY MONEY? That show is wicked good, as sloppy as the writing may be, the cast is amazing and Donald Sutherland, Natalie Zea and Peter Krause deserve something. And I would’ve loved to see Johnny Lee Miller there for ELI STONE. He carries that show and always gives an amazing performance.

I think it’s too early for a BIG BANG THEORY nomination…don’t get me wrong, it’s easily one of the funniest shows on TV and it’s first season was spectacular, but I feel like it needs to really hit it’s stride this season for a nomination. Tony Shalhoub as MONK is a bit overdone. The show is ending with it’s next season and I think that’s good. I feel like Tracy Morgan should have gotten that slot.
However another THE WIRE snub is unacceptable. It’s the only show that everyone I know loves (even those who claim to never watch TV). There really must be some logical explanation for this.
LOST, while being my favorite show on TV, didn’t really have an award worthy season I think. Maybe I need to rewatch it again though.

  • CAB

Nothing for Generation Kill? It is one of the best mini-series that I have seen in a long time.

  • graeme

Ya, how the Globes have passed over JLD 2 years in a row is ridiculous.

  • Phil

I love SuperNatural & think it definitely fills the horror hole in my television diet, but I think the shows’s problem isn’t the charismatic & photogenic Jensen or Jared. Its the uneven seasons. Some episodes are more dramatic & serious in tone then others with the sake of the world at stake, while others are many tongue-in-cheek gagfests like the classic monster movie spoof from this season. For Jensen fans go out and support the 3-D slasher remake of MY BLOODY VALENTINE when it hits theaters next month & then the FRIDAY THE 13TH reboot come Friday, February 13th!
Now, as far as TRUE BLOOD getting nominated, I think that series can be better now that its uneasy first season is hybernating in its coffin til next summer, but as per the remark concerning Debra Messing in the Starter Wife, I think Allan Ball rode his Six Feet Under recognition into the True Blood nom. In Treatment def. does NOT deserve all the nominations it got. No nominations for any TNT drama series or their stars?!

PUSHING DAISIES! PUSHING DAISIES! PUSHING DAISIES! have i mentioned, PUSHING DAISIES???

  • dinky

David Simon must be invisible to awards shows, not a single nod for either The Wire or Generation Kill. I didn’t really expect a change of tune on The Wire, but there’s no excuse for not nominating GK, it was really amazing stuff and only 7 episodes so they can’t claim it was too dense or complicated. Poor stuff really.
