Yesterday, Desperate Housewives, in effect, got reelected for another term. Four more years! According to reports — although the deal isn’t sealed yet — creator Marc Cherry is supposedly in talks to extend the series for four more seasons beyond this May, taking it through the end of the 2012-2013 season.
It’s an interesting change because just last spring, Marc Cherry was adamant that he would leave the series at seven seasons: "Idon’t want to be one of those series that goes on and on and on and bythe time it finishes up its run, no one cares anymore,” he told EW’s Jennifer Armstrong. ”Thegreat thing about The Mary Tyler Moore Show was that we missed it whenit went away. I feel like I already had my down year, season 2, and nowI’m trying to protect the memory."
But that cut-off date seems to have gone out the window now. And that’s likely because of the show’s creative resurgence this season, which fast-forwarded five years and provided five years of delicious secrets for the show’s writers to slowly unearth. Hi, Dave Williams storyline this season! And, with Grey’s Anatomy sagging so much in the ratings, Desperate has become ABC’s top scripted show and is behind only Dancing With the Stars as the net’s No. 1 series. That’s pretty impressive for a show in its fifth season.
But, PopWatchers, how do you feel about four more seasons of Desperate Housewives? Do you think the producers have it in them to churn out that much more story? Will we have to do yet another flash-forward in a season or two? What would you like to see the ladies of Wisteria Lane do in the next few years?

If they continue the quality of this season – good mysteries, compelling stories, great humor – then there’s no reason to stop. Hopefully, they’ll keep season 2 in mind and start to bail out if they lose their drive.
No disrespect Tanner, but with the exception of last week, GREYS has at least tied, but in many weeks beat DH in the 18-49 demo this season
if ABC knows what’s best, they should add more seasons to DH. ABC had a breakthrough when DH, grey’s, and LOST brought in about 18-22 millions viewers each week in their early seasons! with LOST ending in 2010 and grey’s i’m assuming in 2011, DH would be the only blockbuster hit going for them, unless they repeat the triple threat with new groundbreaking series.
i’m always down for more DH, as long as each mystery is fresh.
DALLAS lasted 14 seasons. DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES can handle at least 9. And it’s not really that impressive that in season five it’s getting such great ratings either. DALLAS and DYNASTY both peaked at season 4. DALLAS was #1/2 on TV for seasons 4-8.
I pray and hope the writers give the actors great lines. DH might have the finest acting ensemble on TV (today), but it will fall apart if the writing tanks.
I think Marc Cherry’s original instincts were right. Call it a series after 7 years – if he wants to go beyond that, maybe a spinoff.
While I don’t think it’s impossible for a series to go for nine seasons and still be good, I’m not sure that Desperate Houswives has four more good seasons left in it. Two for sure, which is why I was glad that Cherry announced that there would probably only be two more seasons, but four more is pushing it. Maybe (hopefully) I’m wrong, and the next four seasons will be great. Who knows?

I’m so glad. This is a wonderful show and as long as they continue to provide the funny and juicy writing they always have then I am sure it will be fine!
Desperate Housewives has essentially become the night time soap ABC hoped DIRTY SEXY MONEY would be. I mean I’ve been a fan since the beginning, but seriously, this is the kinda drama & comedy that DSM tried to hit, but could never quite become.
It will never recapture the greatness of the first season, but as a fun soapy comedy, it’s better than it’s been in years. They’ll have enough stories and characters for the extra seasons. Just please give Teri Hatcher better material.
Well, Marc Cherry and his writers better get to work with better scripts if he plans on keeping viewers. I’ll watch if he can keep it interesting and fuuny.

well this is a happy surprise. if they can keep cranking out interesting stories, why not? shows used to go on forever back in the day, 8, 9, 10, 11 seasons. nowadays they can get cancelled so quickly. i like when shows have that lasting power, and you get to grow with them.
Seven is enough, this is a great show, and currently in Season 5, the show has gotten back on its feet. Marc should be planning on ideas for the final seasons and how to keep them interesting , instead of planning for another 4 years. My mind would change if they keep the momentum going up and after the end of the “final” season, but if the show starts going like Season 2 by midway through Season 6, then it’s time to quit. Another factor in the decision should be the wilingness of all the members of the cast for the extra 4 years, but contract disputes might arise, preventing the whole notion of the 4 years thing. Bottom line; seven is enough, or if the show keeps its momentum and ratings going through season 7, then yeah, another 4 years wouldn’t be bad.
No, please no. Not 4 more years. I guarantee, it will not last 4 more years.
The more the better! YAY. Just please don’t let Marc Cherry go off the deep end like Shonda has.
I think desperate housewives is like the best show ever and i am so glad to hear it will be on for 4 more years! Can’t get enough!
Provided the stories and writing are good why not? If I get tired of it I’ll just stop tuning in. It doesn’t seem likely but it’s happened to me with other shows before.
As long as things stay as good as they are now, go for it! It’s hard enough to keep a show on TV these days, if they’ve inked for 4 more years, then huzzah!
I’m very happy with this news. This show could go on forever and you wouldn’t hear me complaining.
ABC must have thrown tons of cash at Marc Cherry. I hope it’ll comfort him when viewers start tuning out due to DH fatigue and the eventuality of declining writer quality. MCherry could have been sensible and cancel DH after seven years and eventually taken his show to the big screen where it belongs. Now, it’s likely DH will die a slow death along the lines of The X-Files and Roseanne leaving viewers to ponder why they even like the show in the first place.
I love Desperate Housewives I love the Combination of Comedy/Drama but if goes on it may decline in Ratings I think Eight would be enough
Desperate Housewives has so much potential. I really, really, really hope they improve the writing. The season-long mysteries don’t work. They need some soap opera writers. The great prime time soaps could handle more than one mystery and storyline at a time, and there was more than one plot line per season. Anyway, this show has great characters and so much potential. I hope the writing improves – this show could be so much better. Oh, and can we force the girls to sign a “no botox” contract or something? Marcia Cross has done something to her face and I don’t like it!
Best show on TV brilliant writing and acting keep them coming.
besssst show ever
i love desperate housewives it would be great to have more seasons i never want it to end hopefully the same characters will star in it.
as long as the same actors star in it it would be great looking forward to it.
Yes while it’s true that ‘Greys,’ is still slightly higher rated in the 18-49 demos, ‘Desperate Housewives’ does bring in more overall viewers, and again for a show in it’s fifth season, that’s pretty exceptional. It has been more consistent and favored than ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has in the last year or two. ‘Grey’s’ peaked commercially and critically back in 2006, meanwhile the Housewives have been there all along, sometimes quietly, and sometimes massively. At the rate their going, Housewives will far our pace Anatomy which has become a complete trainwreck both behind the scenes and on the screen at the moment.
