Today is "Day Without a Gay" day, and according to the movement’s site, "You are encouraged not to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in ‘gay’ — and donate your time to service!" The folks at LOGO’s NewNowNext blog created the video below to explain the cause…

Down with Prop8.
I love gay day!!!
I heard Anne Heche went to work, then had to go home early, before returning to work later in the day.
It looks like Gay Day was a big old flop in my city. I know of three gay faculty members at my school and not only are they all here but I went with one of them out to lunch on our conference. So much for not contributing to the economy….
Didn’t know about this, I would have called in gay too! Why didn’t you guys post this YESTERDAY rather than halfway through the day?
I am not gay (but am a gay supporter) and though I did come to work today, I am not spending any money. My 2 gay co-workers seem to have the same philosophy. (also, my work place is pretty gay friendly, and we don’t work in the public sector, so calling in gay wouldn’t have much of an impact on the greater economy).
While its a great idea, I am quite thankful to have a job right now, and am not wanting to lose it any time soon.. I won’t be buying anything today, tho I don’t know how big a difference that will make. Can’t afford to buy anything anyway!!
Someone should ask Ausiello to inquire with his Grey’s mole to see if T.R. Knight called in gay today. But wait, with his 5 minutes of screen time the whole season, he probably had the day off anyways.
Dammit! If I’d known I could have had a day off! It’s too late now…I have to be at work in an hour!Actually, if I “called in gay”, my boss would be like “So? Get your ass in here now!”
Honestly, I think everyone around here forgot. I work at a large NYC-based company, and there was a lot of enthusiasm for this when the idea started being forwarded around a couple weeks ago. But today seems pretty status quo.
All joking aside, the mastermind, according to the article I read yesterday was a part time comedian and personal trainer in West Hollywood. Now, look, i’m gay, but I’m also not retarded. A personal trainer has very little chance of losing his job to “call in gay” because he makes money based on his clientele, and if you’re a personal trainer in WeHo, don’t tell me that half if not 75% or more of your clients are queens, who no doubt would back you or support your decision to call out today as an act of protest. However, the rest of the country is in dire economic straits, and yes, eventhough everyone always claims us gays have the biggest free spending budgets since we don’t have families to support, calling in gay wouldn’t be a legitimate ailment, and would essentially lead to being fired. It sucks that we’re constantly getting shafted, and NOT in a way some of us enjoy! I don’t live in CA but Proposition 8 not only sucks, but is a huge slap in the face to tons of gay tax payers.
I live in SF so it’s not a big deal if you are gay. still I would have done it if I had not lost my job last week.
I wouldn’t have been able to call in gay even if I’d known about it. The company I work for has a very strict sick/personal day policy, and I’m pretty sure being gay isn’t a legitimate reason to take a day off. I really don’t feel like being fired! It’s an interesting idea, though.
Well, seems like it was a big nothing. I do wonder why there haven’t been any big protests at African American Churches since that community supported Prop 8 by about 70%. It couldn’t be that they fear offending Pres. Elect Obama, could it? Ah the irony… all that urging people to come out and vote for Obama practically guaranteed Prop 8′s passage.
I tried to ‘call in fat’ but they said that’s a marginalized group no one cares about.
Rena…don’t start your mistatement of facts. Fact is “that” community was too small to effect the overall vote and fact is that a majority of all races in CA voted for Prop 8. Those against prop 8 didn’t do enough prior to the vote. While the mormon churches got the word out in all communities, those against prop 8 sat around and wrote on blogs. The sad result of inaction. History shows if you want something you have to go out there and fight for it!
