Our hearts go out to Craig Ferguson

Categories: Television

Hours later, I am still moved by Craig Ferguson’s tribute to his dearly departed mother on last night’s show. My favorite late-night funnyman was so full of raw emotion during his first show since his mother died on Dec. 1 that sometimes I had to look away. It all felt so intimate. He couldn’t help but be a little funny and a bit of a wiseass, and even though we’ve seen him keep it real before instead of going for the easy joke (see his supportive comments during Britney Spears’ troubles), this was a something wholly different. As he said, The Late Late Show will return to business as usual tonight, but last night, it was all about a son’s heartbreak over the loss of his mother. Thank you for letting us in, Craig.

My thoughts are with you Craig.
I watch last night and tried to hold it together but it was hard seeing how Craig was trying to be brave. It was indeed something very sweet for a son to give his ‘mum’ one final farwell.

Craig is a class act. I don’t always watch his show, but I have nothing but respect for him. He is certainly an underrated TV personality. Sounds like it was an authentic moment captured on TV.

  • Winona

What a beautiful tribute… I lost my stepmother on December 4th, so I know what he’s going through, too. It made watching that even more poignant for me.

  • karen

    craig is a class act.

    Love Craig.
I seem to recall another episode like this, maybe last year. I think that his father had passed away, and he had a beautiful monologue about it.

Craig Ferguson is vastly underrated as a late night TV host (he’s my favorite…even over Conan O’Brien), and he’s a class act.

  • Miranda

Love Craig. Such a sweet thing to do for his mom. So sorry for his loss.

  • Linda

What a special man! I bet his mom was very proud of him!

I noticed that nearly every post contained the words “class act” or some variation. While I hate being unoriginal, truer words were never spoken (or typed). Craig is the definition of humanity all wrapped up in an adorable, funny, Scottish package. I keep him and his family in my prayers during this difficult time.

I love this guy! I mean, this isn’t the only time I think that, but his beautiful tribute to his mom…that’s a great example of what an awesome person he is. I love his funny hitting of the camera while he talks. I love his opening monologue (whatever it’s on: vampires, being a citizen…who cares?!). I love him for showing such humanity in a Hollywood world of fake-ness. I also love that Victor Hugo passage. I totally started to feel the lump in my throat. Can Craig win the best person ever award already?

I love Craig–he is the funniest man on TV. But anybody who has watched him carefully or read his great book will know that he is also a human being of great depth and compassion. I wanted to give him a hug last night. I lost my own Mom two years ago and I am still feeling raw, so I knew exactly where he was coming from. Bless him for showing us real human emotion in a medium that is increasingly artificial. And the films of his mother were so sweet and funny–and made so clear how much they loved each other, even if like everybody, their relationship was rather complicated. Love to you, Craig–I’ll be watching tonight, as always.

I love him more and more every time I watch him…what a great guy, funny in a time of sorrow and overall decent human…the footage of his mom w/ RZA was charming…I hope to watch Craig another 20 years…

  • Amy

    super cool guy.

  • Suzy

He is a man of substance and my thoughts are with him and his family.

  • DanOregon

Anyone looking for humanity and honest human interaction late at night should check out Ferguson. Glad to see is gaining in the ratings.

  • Sandy

I’m so sorry for your loss, Mr. Ferguson. Thank you for sharing your heart.

  • Fran

Just watched the show I TIVO’d from last night and still have a lump in my throat. Chi McBride said it well when he said Craig himself is a tribute to the mother who raised and nurtured him.

  • Stace

Already my fav talk show host, Craig really connected with the viewers inner spirit last night. I felt as though he was simply sharing his feelings with a friend. I was blown away. He is a class act & I am a life long fan. My sympathies & respect.

  • Amy

That was truly touching — personal, deep and yet still filled with wry humor. I am rarely up late enough to watch Craig Ferguson but always enjoy him when I do; maybe I should give him a slot on my DVR.

  • cndwelch

Craig is by far my favorite late night host. He’s so funny and so laid back. I love when he has his sister on, she’s a hoot too! I love that he shared his personal experience and played the song at the end. I think I want to have ‘Sexyback’ played at my funeral, and I want to be buried with a picture of Josh Holloway and the entire LOST DVD set (I just hope I don’t die before the series ends).

  • Raven_Moon

His tribute was so classy, genuine & heartfelt. Poor Craig. It’s so hard to lose someone. I can’t imagine having to put on a comedy show so soon after. Well done. My heart goes out to him.

  • mysterylectric

I watched last night as my favorite late night talk show host gave the world one of the most touching, heartfelt, compassionate television moments of all time. If you should happen to read this, my condolences on your loss, and to anyone else who has lost relatives around this time of year…
I lost my grandmother after a protracted hospitalization and slow, painful battle with cancer around the holidays 16 years ago and his show brought tears to my eyes throughout.
And true to his word, his opening tonight was back to business–the business of being the best of the late night talk show hosts–probably the best of ALL the talk show hosts.

  • Deb

Craig Ferguson is far and away the BEST talk show host. Hands down, this critic (that would be me) has seen his his live act and it was no doubt the best show I have ever seen. I like to smoke and have a drink, especially on a Saturday night outing. There was no way I was going to miss one minute of his show.
I just love him, he’s so friggin smart, nobody even comes close to his intelligence and his wit.
He is so proud to be an American Citizen now. He knows more about America now than most Americans know!
This man is the Cary Grant of Comedy, SIMPLY CHARMING!
My final thoughts are… “Conan who?”
You have to come up with a really good guest to tear me away from watching Craig.
I don’t usually agree with the TV critics, but I think that most of them are agreeing with ME for a change.
Well, I think it’s lovely that he is getting the appreciation that he so richly deserves.
    Kudos to you Craig.
Hugs from a very loyal fan!
I have learned that I need to go to bed now.
    Meow….

  • Steve Casman

He did the same sort of thing back when his father past away. I LOVE this guy. I hope he gets the opportunity to succeed Dave Letterman when the time comes for Dave to pass the baton on to someone else.

  • Elizabeth

    How sweet… I second Abby’s sentiments.

  • Mr Kitty’s Mom

That poem was given to me by the Hospice when my mother was dieing and it was such a comfort.
What a good son he is, and what a mother to have raised such a son!

  • Gaylene Clay

Craig I’m so sorry for your loss.
This is a poem that got me through the holidays when my dad died.
    My First Christmas In Heaven
    Author Unknown
I see the countless Christmas trees
around the world below withtiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular! Please wipe awaythat tear, for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hearthe many sounds Christmas songs
that people hold so dear, butthe sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmaschoir up here. I have no words to tell you the joy their voices
bring, for it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me. I see the pain in your heart, even though I am so far away, mwe really aren’t apart. So,be happy for me,loved ones.
You know I hold you dear. Be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above.I send you each a memory of my undying love.

After all,”Love” is the gift more precious than gold. It was always most
important in the stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other,as my Father said to do,for I can’t count the blessings or the love He has for you.
So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear!
Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hope you find this helps you as it did me.
    Love Gaylene Clay

  • Allison

    Dear Craig,
For all the laughs you’ve given us, may you be comforted a millionfold.

  • Maralina

My heart goes out to you Craig. I have lost both my mom and dad and it seems so weird now. I feel a little more “alone.” You are the best! We love you for just being you.
