Alec Greven: 9-year-old love guru, author...movie star?

Little 9-year-old Alec Greven just had How to Talk to Girls, his book on relationship advice, optioned by Twentieth Century Fox, erasing any lingering doubt that he has the smartest parents on earth. The whole thing started with a 3rd grade paper, which was then turned into a handwritten pamphlet sold for $5 at his Colorado elementary school book fair — genius already. But then, after a spot on Ellen DeGeneres’ show, the cash cow love guru was able to roll the pamphlet into this year’s must-have stocking-stuffer, a $10, 46-page hardcover book for HarperCollins, containing advice like, "You also have to be aware that girls win most of the arguments and have most of the power." He’s now in the midst of a high-profile media tour with stops on just about every network and cable news outlet, and as of this week, he’s got a freakin’ movie option. Check the kid out in the clip below — he’s adorable yet confident. Dare I say authoritative? He has to be involved in any movie they make out of this thing. Did I mention his parents are the smartest people in the world?

Anyone read this book yet and want to share some of the best bits of advice? Is an innocent 9-year-old the answer to the ongoing Mars and Venus conundrum? What kind of movie can they work out of this?

This kid is obnoxious and stupid. His “advice” is (obviously) the dating advice of a viginal 9 year old and his success is built on the dollars of middle aged women who thinks it’s so cute that a 9 year old wrote a dating book.

i don’t think it’s fair to call the kid stupid. he’s obviously not stupid. I agree that his success is based on middle aged women and moms that find him adorable. And that being said, I wish this book didn’t exist. IT is stupid.
and the fact that he has three other of these little books on the way is insane. The kid shouldn’t be getting press. This is one of those books that already exists in the knick knack shops around the country.

Lighten up people, he’s a young boy – and this is a cool thing for him to have done. He is a young entrepreneur – no different then someone 4 times his age who has written a book and enjoyed the fruits of their labor. People are far too critical. Why not just have a good laugh – he was cute on Ellen, stuttering and trying to explain his ideas. This is how we should treat the youth of our country, allowing them an opportunity to be creative!

I too think he is cute. More kids need to be creative and proactive besides sitting in front of video games. AND he’s giving back, it’s never to early to teach that. Good for him.

The kid isn’t dumb, he’s SMART. Remember this started as an assignment, and he’s 9. I hope he’s virginal! These will end up being cute kid books/stocking stuffers, that will pay for his college education.I’m not middle aged, or a mom and I think he’s adorable. Although, I really don’t know what they can do for a movie…I think that’s all the parents. But encouraging creativity, and goodwill towards your fellow man is something that deserves press.

I wonder how “cute” he would be (especially for ‘family values’ people) if he wrote a book titled, ‘How to Talk to Guys’.
Would the same ‘cute’ crew start railing and ranting about how homosexuality has corrupted this little boy, and ‘how can he possibly know he’s gay? he’s only 9′ would PROBABLY be the prevelant voice heard.
Of course, any rational person could well ask the same question of him now – “How does he know he’s straight? He’s only 9. What if he finds out in 10 years that he doesn’t like girls? Is his advice still valid?”
Wonder if we’ll ever see a little dating guide for gay boys/girls?
    Probably not…….

    Note to Steve…
Just because you are obsessed with everything SSA-oriented doesn’t mean that you should force everybody else to. And besides, the kid’s NINE. Think about that, you NAMBLA supporter, you…

I could see this being a movie- like a little rascals type thing.
And steve, you’re a weirdo. Why does it matter to you if little boys say they’re gay or not?

I hope no one took my comment as a negative one. I give this kid all the credit in the world. HE has done a brilliant job of doing something he finds worthwhile. and the fact that he is giving back is fantastic. I didn’t mean to come off so harsh. It just one of those “but how does this really get made” things. but obviously the little guy is marketable and doing a great job at that. and i agree with you lindsey, I’d hope a 9 year old would be virginal!
I think i was too harsh in my original post. But I still can’t belive that three more books are on the way. good for him and i wish him well. his motives seem good.
