'Ugly Betty' Bites: Christina brings the funny

I’m happy to report that for the first time in quite a while, Christina enjoyed a quip-filled episode on Ugly Betty. Move over, sound bite bullies Willy and Marc! Christina’s Scottish accent was in hilarious effect this week. See: The Mode fashion closet mistress and carrier of Willy’s test-tube devil spawn calling the clinking of ice cubes "a Scottish lullaby." Good stuff!

As usual, I’ve rounded up the best bites from last night’s Ugly Betty. You can catch the full list after the jump, but first watch the video with my four faves below, and then vote for your fave in the poll that follows. Don’t see your pick on the list? Did I miss an essential bite? Wanna just chat Betty storylines a bit? Leave all that jazz in the comments section, please!

“And Betty, do not worry. I’m gonna catch up on my sleep at work. Per usue!” —Amanda (Becki Newton), after spending a night out on the town

“Oh, there he goes again. Little buggar’s a bloody acrobat.” —Christina (Ashley Jensen), on Wilhelmina’s spawn growing inside of her

“Really, I hadn’t noticed… No, I honestly never noticed.” —Willy (Vanessa Williams), after Betty (America Fererra) mentions how expensive it is to live in Manhattan

“Okay, let’s grip it and rip it.” —Amanda, before going out with Betty to spend $10,000 of other people’s money

“That was only once, and it wasn’t a public place, Mom…. Until they moved the truck.” —Daniel (Eric Mabius), after she accuses him of having a penchant for sex in public places

“Well, you can watch. I’ll drink for all three of us, c’mon.” —Willy, after asking a very pregnant Christina to get a drink with her

“Remember rule No. 2? Real Mode readers. Is it fair that only Ivanka Trump gets to wear dresses like this? No! Shouldn’t frumpy girls from Queens get to feel glamorous, too. Isn’t that what this article is all about?” —Amanda, after Betty chides her for wanting to buy a dress and return it the next day

“Every week, the Village Voice lists all the gallery openings in Chelsea. I always pick the ones with the ugliest art. They have the best food. They figure the drunker you are the more likely you are to actually buy all this crap.” —Amanda, on her strategy for scoring good, free food at gallery openings

“Are you hungry? Because I just spotted dinner.” —Amanda, to Betty before pouncing on two cute guys

“Ohh, the sound of clinking ice cubes. It’s like a Scottish lullaby.” —Christina, longing for booze

“Here’s to the bundle of…what’s the expression? Joy.” —Wilhelmina, toasting to her sure-to-be-evil spawn that’s growing inside Christina

“Oh cut the crap, Wilhelmina. You haven’t even given a second thought to raising this baby, other than its stake in the Meade empire. Oh, I don’t know, look at this place! It’s not even been baby-proofed. Dead baby! Dead baby! Dead baby!” —Christina, pointing out the problems with Willy raising her baby in her totally un-baby-proofed apartment

“Oh, she’s in disguise. It helps us keep a low profile.” —Amanda, after the waitress at a fancy NYC restaurant questions whether frumpy Betty actually works at Mode

“Nothin’ wrong with Angus. I had a lovely tussle in the hay with an Angus once.” —Christina, after Willy suggests the name Angus as a potential baby name

“No, stop it, freeze. You see the way Daniel is looking at her? The way Betty looks at a cheeseburger.” —Wilhelmina, on the romance brewing between Daniel and his new love interest

I hate these soundbytes! I want a Betty TV Watch back!!!

  • Becky

How could you have left out Betty’s quip about “Bad Ronald” the guy who comes in the middle of the night and eats all of Betty’s food?!?!?
Becki Newton was awesome last night.

Seriously- it’s insulting that the Ugly Betty watch has been reducted to re-writing funny lines from the show. Has there ever been an explanation why TV Watch was cut from this show?

  • bettyfan

I don’t know why you guys don’t write an Ugly Betty TV Watch anymore, but continue to write a Grey’s Anatomy one. Once upon a time maybe Grey’s was cooler, but Betty is better written, more cohesive, and has better developed and more relatable characters. When all is said and done, I think Ugly Betty will be the show that is remembered for its quality and accomplishments.

Haven’t caught the eppy yet but I wanted to register my vote (again) for a triumphant Betty-esque return to a proper TV watch. I mean, if you’re going to relegate the recap to funny lines, why not just post the entire script and have done? Come on, EW–The Hills and other assorted “reality” telly gets earmarked for a full-blown TV watch but not Betty? Perhaps because if you condensed one of those shows to sound bytes it’d become glaringly obvious just how mundane they are? We want Betty!

I too vote for a Betty recap! TV Guide doesn’t even do them anymore. I wonder hwat factors go into the decision to recap or not to recap….is it ratings?

  • Ugly Jenny

Great, great, great episode! I love how Ugly Betty mixes hilarity with real touching moments (like when Amanda get home from her second job and Betty has dinner ready for her). They should feature more of Christina because everything sounds better in a Scottish accent, but want I really want is more Councilman Archie! Imagine him and Hilda out on a date, now that would be something to see!
I want my Betty TV Watch back!

I said it last year and I have to say it again this year. Desperate Housewives has the huge audience but Ugly Betty is every bit the powerhouse dramedy that DH is and as cleverly developed in both plot and humor. We laughed so hard last night we were falling all over each other. Me and my girl were off work today and watched UB again this morning. This episode will be remembered as a classic on down the line for sure. Amanda and her sexy questioning voice was too much last night- “Isn’t it? …”Isn’t there?”…”Is it really?” In addition, there were just too many priceless moments and comments to mention but a couple that stand out to me are: Hilda teaching Betty to get tough with Amanda about paying the bills- “Have you tried, Where’s my rent B -itch?” Wilhemena trying to be cool around Connor- “Top of the morning to ya”- complete with Irish accent. Amanda eating expensive dinner with Betty at restaurant- “We can’t pay for this? At least we hit our target #. High Five!

  • Not a very happy camper

I’m loving Ugly Betty this season but hating that the TV Watch is gone, just like everyone else. Does popular opinion count for nothing? If Tanner can’t/won’t do them anymore, can’t someone else? I’m sure there are many people out there who would do it for free. I really don’t understand what the problem is here.

Also loved Amanda in what looked like a designer coat over top of a fast food uniform as she was sneaking into work: “Don’t look at me I’m a freak!” – as she turns her head in shame; and the exchange between Daniel and his mom as she grills him about falling for his buddy’s girl was a stunner!

I was reading on another site that the ratings are not good this year and that it is on the bubble for renewal? Is this true?
    Cryin’ shame.

  • Frank

Bring back T.V. Watch for this awesome show! So freaking funny and heartwarming at the same time.LOVE IT!

  • Delon

Great episode. The ratings for the show are continually on the rise and yet no TV Watch?

  • Houstonian Jen in DC

    Bring back the TV Watch!

  • Dillon

my comment got edited out but Hilda’s recurrent line thoughout the night was pretty darn funny too. Mainly because of Oritz’s delivery of it!
