You're kidding right? You have to be. If you like Coldplay, that's fine. But you can't seriously be arguing that Coldplay are better and more unique than Joe Satriani. That has to be one of the most ignorant statements I've read in a long time.

HAHAHAHA... I love this response, even though I am not big a fan of Satriani. I still agree with everything you said.

Re: Original post... I was in agreement until he mentioned cold play being in any way, shape or form "unique". That made me barf in my mouth, like their music does us both.

Kudos

I recognize this post is years old, but I just had to comment on the ignorance here. If you'd listened to half of Satriani's discography, you'd realize he has more musical talent in his pinky than that piss-poor excuse of a band Coldplay could ever sell their pathetic souls for. Further, did you know that Joe Satriani is responsible for such guitarists as Kirk Hammet, among others, including Steve Vai? And if Coldplay's music is so unique compared to Satriani's, why does Satch improvise every piece he's written, to some extent or another, in each performance? I bet Coldplay doesn't--I can't back that statement up because whenever I hear them I have to pull off on the side of the road to vomit, so I certainly wouldn't watch their concerts. Chew on that for awhile, get some musical education behind yourself, then post about how much better processed, re-processed, then re-re-processed the pop industry's autotune-infested genre is than instrumental.

As I recall, George Harrison got sued successfully for "ripping off" from "He's So Fine" by the Chiffons.

While I agree that CP's riff does sound awful like the 00:50 piece of this track, nonetheless, there are only so many ways to put notes together and a whole lot of people are doing it, and... not a lot of people are listening to other people's work as they try to make their own.

Leave it to the lawyers but I say, unless the pages are lifted word-for-word, ya don'ts gotta case, counsellor.

You all seem to lose the point. It is called COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. If Coldplay went to Satriani and requested usage and payed the RIGHTS fee all would be fine. Musician make a living off of residuals and rights of usage fees. Having worked with musicians most of my life and being a professional photographer myself, the copyrights laws are what protect our income achieved from our creative talents.

I often teased my sister for liking Coldplay by calling them Blandplay. I don't despise them. I simply cannot get into their middle-of-the-road music. Listening to them on the car radio is fine. But I wouldn't buy it.
It would be interesting to know if any wannabe teenage rock guitarist played the 'I Wanna Fly' melody to their friends who were also Coldplay fans. How many would applaud them for mistakenly believing they were hearing a rocked-up version of 'Viva la Vida'?
I get the 'can't copyright chord progression' rule, but the melody is too similar to dismiss. Whether you like him or not, if he retracts his claim then it's open season for (c)rappers everywhere to butcher every song ever recorded.
And to all Coldplay fans: As a bass player who enjoys playing guitar ocassionally and is a big fan of Joe Satriani. Not all fans are as over-zealous and childish as some of the 'Joe is best' and 'Coldplay are rubbish' comments on this page make us out to be.
