Commercial Watch: 'Animal Crossing: City Folk'

After a dozen too many viewings of Wii’s first commercial for Animal Crossing: City Folk, I have HAD IT! with the two glassy-eyed blondes who act vaguely excited about their big trip past the river bend to watch cartoon fireworks. Then I realized mine was a particularly self-loathy type of exasperation, because superficially I’m pretty much just like these women. So the only logical next step was to insert myself, uninvited, into their exceedingly mellow cross-country chill sesh. Watch the original commercial here, then press play below.

hahaha, I hate this commercial so much, too. The game seems completely and utterly pointless. Loved the snarky remark about the woman using the sexy voice about going to see the fireworks.

I thought I was the only one who hated these commercials. I loathe the other Animal Crossing: City Folk commercial, where she decides not to go fishing but shopping instead. That voice of the woman with the controller for some reason drives me insane.

  • Shamrock

I feel bad for the woman without the controller. How exciting to sit there and watch someone else play this lame looking game.

  • Curious

Is that Jordana Spiro in the Animal Crossing commercial?

  • alex

annie, you are freaking hilarious! you should have done the “no on prop 8″ musical.

  • Nancy

Thank you! I hate those commercials! And I find it hard to believe there’s a market for this terrible game. Oh, wait, I forgot about the stoners.

  • MK

For the record, I love all versions of Animal Crossing, and I’m not a stoner. I just like video games that don’t require me to have any real gaming skills or hand-eye coordination. Because I pretty much have neither.

  • Tim Lade

BWAHAHAHAHAH! Annie you rock my world!

  • Steph

I love Animal Crack…not so much the commercials though. Long live Animal Crack, I mean Animal Crossing. :)

  • Dennis N.

Please tell me that this is the first of MANY Commercial Watch installments! Also: Killer boots, man!

  • CC

I am so glad someone else noticed this insanity. It makes me die inside too.

  • Cara

Wow, those are pretty close to the snarky comments -I- make every time I see that stupid commercial. Seriously, if those vapid, harmless blondes show up on my TV pimping their vaguely creepy game one more time, I’m putting a foot through my TV. Or at least throwing Chex Mix at it.

  • meggie

i hate those commercials too! especially when one girl asks the other if she wants to go fishing, and the girl replies, “i kinda did that yesterday”. ok, either you did or you didn’t go fishing. you can’t just “kinda” do it. grrr. and the fake fireworks enthusiasm is annoying. “are you kidding?” yeah, awesome. wow. i find myself getting really worked up over dumb stuff like this.

  • Chism

I heart anything that Annie is in… she is too funny and says exactly what I am thinking… It’s true ya’ll!

I love you, Annie. You are so strange.

  • alexandra

i totally don’t get these animal crossing things. why would any grown woman want to “shop” in a video game? go outside fer crissakes!! good lord. and i agree with the earlier poster about how you can’t “kinda” fish. these commercials drive me nuts. i don’t get the point of these “games.” is there really a market for fake shopping and fake fishing if you’re over the age of 13? good lord, our society is even more pathetic than i thought.

  • To Alexandra

As entertaining as your self-righteousness is, I must ask is Animal Crossing any more simulated than your pretending to have a roundtable conversation with people you’ve never met and will never see?

  • LL

Is it just me or does the first glassy-eyed blond chick look a lot like Amanda, the blind contestant from America’s Next Top Model?

  • Tenna

The AC games are actually pretty darling, but their commercials do suck very hard. D:

  • Anne

Annie, you’re hilarious! I love when you do stuff like this.

  • To “To Alexandra”

Your unnecessarily beotchy comment is amusing, since you are commenting to someone “you’ve never met and will never see.” Pot meet kettle.

  • Anne Marie

Thank you Annie! I HATE those commercials. I tried to fastforward through one the other day even though I was watching live TV. I’m assuming that I’m their target audience because I’m the same age as the women in the commercial and I own a Wii, and yet I have an extremely negative visceral reaction when I watch it. Back to the drawing board ad folks!

  • Dennis N.

    LL-
    ABSOLUTELY.

  • Jesse

Annie – I love you! You said exactly what I was thinking every time I see these advertisements. I loved the comment about the swank glass-walled apartment. If only you threw the phrase “Exclusive” in there somewhere it would have been pure bliss! :-)

  • Lauren

What a horrid commercial. They used to have such fun Animal Crossing commercials too. :\
To Alexandra – young women weren’t originally Animal Crossing’s target audience but they’re the ones who buy these games the most. So the ad execs at least know what their audience is. Still. After commercial.

  • mike

I’m not sure about animal crossing,
but I can watch this vid over and over
    and over again.
    I wanna realy know where
    this apartment is!!! Awesome!
