How 'Twilight' turned us on to AA Bondy's 'Vampyre' blues

I really enjoyed the Twilight movie — yes, me, an adult male, sorry, haters — which led me to catch up on the first season of HBO’s True Blood over Thanksgiving weekend. As Jean and many of you have already noted, that show got a lot better after the first few eps. Anyway, what I’m trying to say here is, I am now craving further undead-themed entertainment like a vampire who’s been locked in a cellar with nothing to slurp for weeks. Good thing blogger Carly Carioli over at my old stomping grounds, The Boston Phoenix, has brought my attention to "Oh the Vampyre," an unreleased cut from alt-country dude AA Bondy. (Check out a live clip below, or download a clearer acoustic take from Bondy’s Daytrotter session.) It’s a sweet, sorrowful love song about vampires and their troubled hearts — perfect! And even if it weren’t, it would still be a pretty great tune. The Phoenix is recommending "Oh the Vampyre" for a spot in the closing credits of True Blood next season. I hope you’ll join me in whole-heartedly agreeing. HBO, listen up!

More on Vampire Music:
EW broke down the Twilight soundtrack, track by track
…then gave the whole soundtrack an A– review
Whoa, Bella Swan is playing Joan Jett?!
PopWatch was on the scene at the Breaking Dawn concert series
True Blood’s vampire Bill has excellent taste in indie rock

Entertainment Weekly should just change its name to Twilight Weekly.

    Paige, don’t be bitter.

Simon, it’s interesting and good to hear that other males did like the movie as much as I did. I went to the theater opening night for two married couples along with other friends and the males of our group loved the movie as well. They also happened to read the books after being pressed by their wives.

Amen Paige. I almost cancelled my subscription (and if this keeps up especially with more movies coming out, I will) cause I’m really sick of reading Entertwilight Weekly and seeing pouty vampire mugs arrive in my mailbox.

I hated Twilight, and I only kind of liked True Blood, but Let the Right One in beats them both.

True Blood is by far one of the best new shows this year. Can’t wait for the next season.

Hi, have you seen Moonlight? Would it be possible for you to do an article of its dvd release in January and the reruns on SCIFI beginning in January as well. Trying to get the word out to fans of the vamp phenom. Great that you love twilight, seen it 3 times already – It takes a real man with true grit to admit to that fact.

Wow thought your withdrawal was almost final. But no not even EW can quit cold turkey. I dont care how many guys ” come out ” it is mostly women who slobber over this crap. I know plenty of other chick flicks I would rather watch or so called chick books that I could read.

Let the Right One In is absolutely amazing!

  • Tyler

    Twilight Weekly… hmmm… cool!

  • Kelsey

Let the Right One In and True Blood really make Twilight look like absolute drivel. True Blood’s a vampire show for grownups, and it’s excellent. Can’t wait for new shows next summer.

MYSELF AND MANY OTHERS ARE BEGGING-PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE STOP WITH ALL THIS TWILIGHT NONSENSE!!!!

  • only me

Hahaha! It’s so funny how the haters react. By the way Simon Vozick-Levinson, i also happen to know some males here who read the book, so don’t worry you’re not the only one. Although you males are way outnumbered by females of course. Go on with your twilight updates. The media hype won’t entirely stop you know, especially since New Moon is going to be filmed. So i think people should just deal with it, right? (:
