I didn’t see Anthony Hopkins’s or Daniel Day Lewis’s performances, so I can’t really give a truly informed opinion. But I woould like to point out that while Philadelphia may seem dated, I think that’s a credit to where we have come as a society. I certainly don’t want to suggest that the gay community is coasting now and that everything is easy for them (see California’s Proposition 8 controversy as one example of how things are not easy), but society and its views of homosexuality and AIDS has come a long way in 15 years.
While I am fine with Tom Hanks’s first Oscar, my personal vote goes to Liam Neeson. He was great as Oskar Schindler. But take nothing away from Laurence Fishburn as Ike Turner. Incredible performance.
I always wondered if you had switched the release order of Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, if Tom Hanks would have still won two Oscars.
Anthony Hopkins, absolutely. He was breathtaking in ROTD and with Emma Thompson he created pure magic.
Tough… Neilson or Hanks… I am going with Hanks, it didn’t even look like him!
I agree with you completely. Neeson’s performance still stands, while Hanks’ very good performance today seems a bit melodramatic.
But this also may be because after Philadelphia, Hanks has given far better performances (Gump, Cast Away, Private Ryan).
Neeson I don’t think has ever touched the performance he gave as Oscar Shindler.
Hanks’ role was also more immediate with the world living in the era of the AIDS epidemic.
If you don’t think that Neeson ever touched the performance he gave as Shindler, then you didn’t see Rob Roy (don’t look at the kind of a movie, although in it’s type it was excellent), Ethan Frommand a few others which the title escape me at the present.
Liam Neeson, hands down
