Basking in the glow of Twilight’s boffo reception at the box office, Summit Entertainment, the fledgling studio behind the teen vampire romance flick, wasted no time announcing that a movie version of the saga’s second novel, New Moon, is now officially a go.
As a fan of the Stephenie Meyer-penned series, I’m cautiously optimistic about the sequel, but it’s hard not to think about several obstacles to overcome in moving the story from the page to the big screen. First is the quantity — and quality — of the special effects it requires. With its morphing werewolves and new locations, the budget for New Moon will figure to have to be substantially larger than Twilight’s paltry $37 million price tag to make it credible. (I can’t be the only one disappointed with the running and sun-induced "dazzle" effects in the first flick.) Second is the prospect of a largely Robert Pattinson-free script. Not to give too much away to newcomers, but Pattinson’s heartthrob vamp Edward Cullen is largely absent from Meyer’s second novel. Clearly, Pattinson and his perfectly coiffed hair have been a big draw for smitten Twilight fans. The filmmakers will either need to figure out a way to bring Edward into the plot or risk the possibility Team Edwarders might feel disappointed. And finally, in the realm of special effects, how the heck is Taylor Lautner going to grow a foot within the next year to portray the gargantuan Jacob?
Are you excited about the confirmation of a sequel, Twilighters? Will you see the flick even if Rob isn’t in it so much? Got any suggestions on how to make the next movie better than the first? Which New Moon scene(s) are you dying to see on the big screen?

I can’t wait!
What no Rob? I won’t watch lol
No seriously, I read the books because I’ve a big fan of Rob since he played Cedric.
To make the movie have Edward in it, it would of course have to stray from the book, but we could follow Edward through his briefly mentioned adventures. All this while also focusing on Bella and Jacob.
I understand the disappointment in the dazzle but for me I respect it because of the low budget Twilight was given. I also think that with the ending of the Twilight movie they will work Edward more into the New Moon film, adding in what Edward told Bella he did while he was away. I will see New Moon even if it wasn’t my favorite because it’s still important to the series and I want to see Eclipse made. I think just having more money Catherine will be able to use the special effects making New Moon a better made film. Don’t get me wrong, though, I loved Twilight, cheesy and all.
I have no interest in seeing the film if Rob is hardly in it. The books dont interest me – just Rob. I did read New Moon and was bored to death with the middle section. I wanted to see what happened to Edward.
They were to reverential to the first book. That must not happen with New Moon. I want to see Edward in Italy and his dealings with the Italian vampires. I have no interest in seeing Kristen and Taylor.
Yes, I’ll def. watch New Moon. I think Jacob is adorable. And of course they will find a way to put more of Robert in the movie. Movie executives are not stupid. They have their work cut out for them with the trip to Italy. (and I agree the special effects need a little work)
For all of us who have read the books are well away of the story in New Moon. I’m sure they can have plenty of Edward in Bella’s flashbacks and/or dreams, plus there will be plenty of him at the end to make it all worth it.
I am looking forward to seeing every scen play out on the big screen.
I heared there was rumors saying that steven strait may play in new moon and the rest of the saga in place for taylor lautner. I think he would fit well. And since im so much of a jake fan, no i would not be the least disipointed that Robert would not be in the sequel.
I am in! Don’t forget about Team Jacob.
It will be a tough movie to make. I love the books and the movie, but I hope to see more money go into special effects for New Moon. It still was amazing, I can’t wait to see it again! As a Team Edward, it will be worth it to suffer through his absence in the movie, because the end of New Moon is so good.
Rob Pattinson is the heart and soul of the films for me so its safe to say if he’s hardly in the new film I wont be that interested in seeing it.
I want to see Edward’s time in Italy. Infact I’d like to see him turn to the dark side for a while and be tempted to drink humans blood again. It woudl be powerful to see the blood lust get the better of him away from Bella. They coudl have carlisle struggle to keep Edward from losing it big time. Great opportunity for scenes between Rob and Peter.
I too want to see Edward struggle away from Bella. He’s too fascinating a character to leave out of the film till the end. Its far more powerful to see how he struggles and gives us the viewer the opportunity to see some vampire action. Rob always wanted a chance for Edward to kick some butt. In the book it hints at Edward beign tempted back to drinking human blood. Personally I am not interested in the motorbike repair scenes in New moon. they go on for ever.
I know they’ll cut some but Edward is the whole last third and beginning of in New Moon and the Volturi finale will be intense. Jacob’s friendship and the attachment Bella forms with him in Edward’s absence & rejection is the core of the remaining saga’s dynamic. So you can’t bypass that and still expect to connect with Eclipse. My husband and I have seen Twilight 3 times now; took our kids the 3rd time and we will definitely see the others!
The middle of New moon is so boring. So repetative. Motorbikes scene after scene. I’d rather see Edward in Italy dealing with the Volturi. Much more exciting.
I can’t wait! Granted it will be less Edward but I’d see if he was only in it for 5 minutes! Hopefully they will get through ‘the mourning’ phase and get Edward back as soon as possible. I’m sure Summit knows that Rob Pattinson is a HUGE reason this movie is doing so well so I’m sure they want to make sure he is in as much as possible if they want us to spend our money to see it!
I can’t wait for New Moon! When I first read it I thought Edward really was there watching over Bella when she was having those hallucinations. They need to make that a fact for the movie – at least up to a certain point. Show us he is nearby protecting her then show his perspective when he runs off a bit as well. Reunite them in Italy & we will all be happy
I couldnt agree more with earlier posters. New moon is a snooze fest from the time Edward leaves till we learn he’s in Italy trying to commit suicide. I want to see him go to the Volturi and even head off to Alaska before that. I;d rather the money went on Italian location shots than lots of werewolf shots.
I definitely agree that Edward could be included more in the film by detailing what he was doing while away from Bella. Most people would rather be shown what he was up to than just hear about it at the end of the movie! It wouldn’t stray from the book too much–as Stephenie Meyer has pointed out, the films can take multiple perspectives, while the books, due to their first person narrative, only showed Bella’s. I think they could definitely make it work.
I also hope that the special effects are better the second time around. They weren’t awful, but they weren’t “dazzling” either.
And Taylor Lautner kinda bothers me (not sure what it is) so if they recast him with someone who better fit the part I wouldn’t mind.
I would rather see a lot more Edward in the movie version of New Moon. Surely they can somehow work more Rob into the script. They definitely need to spend more $$ on special effects. I didn’t like the running in this one, but I liked the sparkle because it wasn’t over the top.
Pattinson is a huge draw and seeing him lose control and kill people away from Bella would be very powerful. It could send him over the edge and that could be the final straw to get him to go to Italy to commit suicide.
There’s only so many times you can show Stewart on the back of a motorbike.
They must not make the mistake they made with Twilight. New Moon should only be used as an aide memoire. Being too reverential to Meyer backfired.
I’ll watch the movie. I’d feel empty inside if I didn’t
And I was a little disappointed with the special effects, but then again it’s not exactly like I was the one trying to make people sparkle so yeah. Scene? Alice’s Grand Theft Auto Stunt duh! (Caps intended)
just as she is writing the 5th book from edwards point of view….why dont you not only show whats going on with bella…but also with the vampires at that time and how much it pains him.
What they ought to do is combine New Moon and Eclipse into one film. The story would be much more streamlined (and bearable) and of course, leaves room for more Edward. I can’t see this saga stretching four films.
Pattinson is the main draw. He’s just incredible. Taylor’s all right and a sweet boy and will do but come on Summit. You KNOW what counts. We want to see real men like Pattinson.
i think its worth that edward leaves.. ’cause the end is the best. and if he doesnt leave.. like the third one have to be a totally diferent story cause if edward doesnt leave.. bella will not fall for jake.. and the third.. is like the love triangle betwenn edward jaacob and vella
One thing that New Moon will have to do is develop the other Cullens characters. That is one thing that did not happen in Twilight. So maybe they will able have more scenes with the family at the beginning of the film and condense the time with Jacob more.
I think they should stick to the book. I know it will suck that Edward isn’t in it much, but maybe they can make the part that he is in better, like add a few more scenes. But it is DEFINITELY necessary to have jacob in the movie..a lot! it won’t be the same otherwise. so please, DON’T change it TOO much, me and my friends will for sure go see it even if rob isn’t in it for most of the movie!
I think if they make the next movie they need to stick more to the book than they did last time so yes, it would be ok if they left Edward out.
