Finally! After a teaser trailer that focused solely on a chilling glimpse of the young Tom Riddle, and an international trailer that featured some Ron Weasley snogging and a lot of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it action, the first full trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is upon us. It’s embedded below; take a look and then make like Harry and Dumbledore and apparate past the jump to discuss. (For non Potter-heads — all 16 of you — that translates to "click on the jump link and then we’ll talk about trailer.")
We open with this totally brills exchange between Harry and the Hogwarts Headmaster:
Dumbledore: [Closing in with Harry on a mysterious house] You are, of course, wondering why I brought you here tonight.
Harry: Actually, sir, after all these years, I just sort of go with it.
Well played, Daniel Radcliffe, well played.
Then we meet professor Horace Slughorn (played by Jim Broadbent, apretty great piece of casting even if I personally was pulling for BobHoskins in the role), the new potions master who introduces Harry’sclass to a love potion that seems to make its way into Ron’sbloodstream. Coupled with the moment (also featured in the internat’ltrailer) when Hermione whacks Harry in the head for calling himself"the chosen one," it’s super great to see Harry’s two bestest friends(and the actors who play them) getting some meaty screen time afterspending so much of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenixon the sidelines. Quickly, though, the fun comes to a halt, withHermione in tears, the Dark Mark ominously hovering over Hogwarts, andVoldemort’s Death Eaters terrorizing central London. Fans of the booksknow Half-Blood Prince contains some of the series’ mostlighthearted and harrowing moments, and this first robust look at thefilm makes it seem like returning director David Yates is walking thatline quite nicely.
What do you think, Popwatchers? Does the extra timethe filmmakers have had for the visual effects — like the "memory fog"inside Dumbledore’s Pensieve or quick glimpse we got of Quiddich –look like it’s paying off? Are you as slightly unnerved by how buffRupert Grint looks in that green tank top as I am? And mostimportantly, how will Twilighters react (deafening squeals? raptslience? rioting?) when this trailer plays in front of Twilight this weekend?

I do like all these snippets we’ve been getting – something to whet our appetites until July ‘09 (don’t get me started, but hey, at least now I don’t feel like I have to go to the movies this weekend). I like the way the movies are going…
Oh Dear GOD I cannot wait for this film! The more the trailers come out the more I want to see it! This is no way for a self respecting 35 year old mother to be acting!!!!!!!! Oh and by the way I LOVE Michael Gambon and will weep bitterly at this movie. (I am so pathetic…..)
Twilighters will be screaming from start to finish and may never actually hear anything…….even the movie itself!
The Twilighters will love it. If they know what’s good for ‘em. LOVE the wispy memory visuals. I don’t care if they toyed with our hearts and Fall Potter-watching hopes; I CANT WAIT.
I’m kind a sad popwatch. This trailer came out like 5 days ago, and now you pay attention to it. I know you are all about twilight, but HP is way bigger. You should know.
Any how, holly crap, why Rupert Grint is getting so hot!!!1
why so little malfoy. he really is the best!
It looks really good! I wish WB hadn’t pushed it back so far!
This player wouldn’t let me see it, but being the potter-fan I am, I searched for it and finally saw it. And to it I say:
WOOT WOOT!
And honestly, I believe(but don’t terrorize me because I really don’t care) a good amount of ‘twilighters’ are HP fans at their core who missed harry and needed something to fill in the interim. That said,
I am soo psyched for this movie, and it would appear that my movie release party is so totally on!
I love me some EW, and I love me some HP…but seriously, this came out a week ago – why the Pop Watch delay???
I love Twilight, but I am a true Harry Potter fan and am looking forward to seeing this on the big screen when I watch Twilight! This looks like the best Harry Potter yet!
THATS WHAT THE F*** I’M TALKIN ABOUT!
I turned into a complete fangirl when I saw this trailer! I couldn’t be more excited for the film, it’s just disappointing having to wait so long. I hope it still has the light-hearted spirit of the book, but can handle the sadness that happens too.
i love twilight the book, not so much into the hype of the movie…but i LOVE LOVE LOVE HP! so i think ill force myself to see that movie just to see the trailer on the big screen…
I can’t wait to see this movie Friday! What…it’s not showing until July! Somebody hide the razor blades. Great trailer for what I am sure will be a great movie. Also, do I detect a Sectumsempra scene? Malfoy looking in a mirror distraught? Me thinks so.
Boy, EW is right on top of things. In other news, EW, Obama has been elected president, the Giants have won the Super Bowl, and Britney Spears had a baby.
Kelly, you are not alone! I’m a 36-year-old mom and I could not be more excited about this movie and about Harry Potter in general! I’ve been re-reading books 6 & 7 just to sort of marinate in them in anticipation of the movie coming out. I’m proud to be a Potter-head totally independent of any connection through my kids!
Twi-hards (ugh..*vomits*…) should LOVE Harry Potter, because without Mrs. Rowling’s work, I’d wager Twilight wouldn’t be anywhere near the sensation its become. Because of HP’s success, publishers have been, and still are, looking for the next great series of crossover fiction that appeals to adults and children. They found Twilight.
just one word…
“SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!” ahem…ok, i THINK i’ve recovered!
thanx for the peek!!!
After seeing the trailer, the biggest reason I’ll be going to the midnight screening of HBP is to see Rupert Grint. He is looking SO hot in the trailer. That cute adorable redhead grew up into a sexy heartthrob overnight. Amazing.
Merlins Beard! What happened to Ron? He had a great growth spirt! I LOVED this trailer. OMG, I can’t wait until next year *sad*. It’s true since we had to wait for the next Harry Potter movie, some fans needed something else to occupy their time, and that was Twilight. I’m still going to see the movie, even though I don’t think it’s going to be as good as the book. No comparisson to HP, which always blows me away!
BC you are so right about how Twilight fans should love Harry Potter because as you said without JK Rowlings work there would be no hype for Twilight. To put these things into perspective I read a article earlier this week on ew how the four Twilight books have sold around 18 million copies and the seven Harry Potter books have sold over 400 million copies. To me there is no comparison to the books with Twilight a nice story that kids will like today and Harry Potter books being liked for generations and being put up on shelves with other treasured novels.
It’s Quidditch. Not Quiddich.
shut the eff up about Twilight! Here is a post that’s about HARRY POTTER. So why don’t you talk about HP and how wonderful, fantastic, etc. that the movie looks and save the Twilight digs for another post? It’s getting really old.
Based on this, I’d say Michael Gambon is growing into Dumbledore’s robes rather nicely (I’ve been a little disappointed the last two films). Nice to see Ron get his moment of glory on the Quidditch pitch.
I totally totally agree! But it’s Ms. Rowling, not Mrs. Rowling. She’s not married to Mr. Rowling. I know it seems silly, but I hate it when people call me Mrs. rather than Ms.
FABULOUS. It still kills me that I could be seeing this movie this weekend, had WB not postponed it.
Also, this trailer came out about a week ago. Maybe if EW wasn’t up Twilight’s butt that they need a map to get out, we would’ve seen it on here sooner? Just a thought.
Malfoy! I am so glad to see him. He’s been woefully underused these past 2 movies.
Also, I have only one word to say for this trailer: Awesome.
Looks awesome! Count me as another 30-something mom obsessed with all things Harry. I love that we will finally see Harry and Ginny together! And I love that Hermione keeps Harry’s ego in check. And the interaction between Dumbledore and Harry looks fantastic.
The trailer is better in HD
