Daytime Emmys: Washing their hands with soaps?

Daytimeemmy_lIt’s not a huge surprise that selling the Daytime Emmys is an uphill battle, especially after the abysmal ratings for this year’s broadcast on ABC. Still, it’s sad to hear that the pageant honoring the kings and queens of soaps and talk shows, which historically has alternated between ABC and CBS, might head off to cable land and focus less on those two networks’ daytime dramas and soap stars. The actors on soaps work at breakneck speeds and should have the same right to their big fete as their night-time counterparts. Then again, perhaps if the ceremony moves from major-network prime-time to a cable network daytime broadcast, it could help the event escape prime-time expectations. (They might also be able to keep that two-hour running time that way.) And really, where would we be without winning moments like Jeanne Cooper or Susan Lucci (pictured) FINALLY winning their well-deserved Emmys?

What of this, my soap-watching PopWatchers? Anyone feel slighted by ABC and CBS passing on the Daytime Awards? Is this the final nail in the coffin for soap operas, or is there a silver lining to this potential move?

I think it should be broadcast during daytime on one of the either of the regular networks. But then again, would that work completely?
I guess fans like me would just DVR it, like I’ve done recently, or maybe they should air it on a night other than Friday – Sunday, maybe.

When I was in my teens it wasn’t broadcast at night. It was a daytime thing. Lest we forget the awards mean alot to the daytime people not because the show is seen on tv, but because they are recognize exceptional work done in the past year.

I think the Daytime Emmy’s are just not there in terms of awards, it seems every year there are several major gaffs in the nominating process and the mere fact that the Daytime Emmy nominating commitee can’t seem to give those much deserved NBC actors on DOOL, Passions etc a look. It’s always been between soaps on CBS or ABC and NBC has been relegated to hair and lighting….plus come on, Daytime stars seem to not know how to dress for the occassion either…The Daytime Emmys are out of touch!!!!

The soaps have brought ABC, CBS and NBC more than enough viewers and money over the last 30 years. They need to pay respect where it is due.

Put it on SoapNet … duh.

To me, the perfect move would be to Soapnet or Bravo. Air it at night, with a red carpet and let it go for 2 or 3 hours. Focus more on the talk shows and game shows (including The View, Ellen, Bonnie Hunt, etc.) Even if 4 or 5 million people watch, that is still a great number for Bravo or Soapnet.

I agree with Eileen- this show deserves more respect than that. I thought it was petty of NBC to pull out of the broadcast because their soaps weren’t always prominently featured. Moving the show to SoapNet is an idea, but Disney has previously said none of their networks, including SoapNet, would broadcast the show. I’ve been taping it the last 2-3 years and only watching the categories in which actors from my soap are competing- I suspect that’s part of the reason for the low ratings. Folks aren’t willing to commit to a two hour show in which, for example, only one category interests them. I hope the show is broadcast somewhere, the hard-working and under appreciated actors in the medium, and the other daytime personalities/shows, deserve thier night to shine.

What a slap in the face to both the fans and the hardest working actors anywhere! CBS should be ashamed of themselves for dissing their Daytime Dramas. It was thrilling to see Jeanne Cooper FINALLY win her much deserved Emmy. What happens next year? Will ABC do the same? Sad day for longtime fans like myself..

Maybe there should just be ONE broadcast..”The Emmys”…and not break it down between Daytime and Primetime. If possible, take out some more of the awards and move them to the “alternate” ceremony…and give us all the heavy hitters from both Primetime and Daytime all in one show.

I think it would be great on cable – on a network not owned by any of the broadcast outlets so that the hosts are not those trotted out by the network hosting that year. More equitable and interesting that way.
