Purple Reign or Purple Feign?

Las Vegas Prince tribute band Purple Reign kicked off The Late Show’s cover band week last night with a rousing performance of "Let’s Go Crazy" (unfortunately, the video clip is no longer available). I dunno. Singer "Jaysun" has the 1984 Prince and the Revolution-era guitar-strum-shimmy down pat, and you gotta give them credit for putting it all out there by taking on one of His Royal Badness’ best-known songs. But still, with a male second guitarist they had zero of the Prince-Wendy chemistry (no small omission), and musically, the performance was a bit off, especially when Jaysun botched the first guitar solo. To be fair, there are few performers in history who can rival Prince during his Purple Rain era,  and watching Purple Reign made me run out to find the original performance, which perhaps is exactly what a good tribute should do. (Although it really isn’t even fair to these guys, I’ve embedded the original below.) What’d you think, PopWatchers? Does Purple Reign do Prince justice, or is he just too untouchable for a solid cover band performance? Is this Vegas cover act the first step toward Asian Prince cover bands and other Elvis impersonator-like monstrosities?

Yes, I will agree that this wasnt their best performance. However, I have seen them several times and it is a recommended “must see” whenever I am in Vegas. I am hoping their nerves got the best of them…..I have seen them play with as little has seven people and as many as 150..
I wish they would have performed Rasberry Beret which always rocks the house.

I think they did a solid job – I really enjoy seeing good tribute bands and love discovering new ones. I’ve seen enough Beatles tribute bands, that’s for sure – and why is Dave missing his opportunity to have the Fab Faux on, given that Late Show bassist Will Lee is in the band?! (Perhaps it’s because it’s TRIBUTE bands week and not COVER bands week.) I really do wish the Atomic Punks could be featured, though, but they’re based out of Los Angeles.

they were tight. But don’t fake the funk. If you think about shelling out money to see these guys, go see the the real deal. There is no better performer.

Purple Reign is awesome. Best concert I’ve been to in a very long time. If you like Fake Prince, you’ll LOVE fake Morris Day. Seriously, these guys rock the house. See them immediately.

    Hmmm… I guess P.T. Barnum was right.

Purple Reign brings the house down every weekend in Vegas. I have seen them numerous times and they are the real deal. Forget the Wendy chemistry, they don’t need it! They have their own. Admittedly, last night wasn’t the absolute best I’ve seen them, but I fully believe it was nerves. Give credit where credit is due, and that’s to Purple Reign!

Purple Reign rocks! They pack their venues every single weekend here in Vegas. I have seen them multiple times and they are amazing! I will admit, last night was kinda an off night for them, usually they are much much better!! :)

Although I’ve never been a fan of cover bands, Purple Reign did all right on Letterman last night (Nov. 17th). I’ll be watching Letterman’s show all week to see the other cover bands that will be featured. With the originals’ ticket prices
for their concerts so sky high, maybe hearing a cover band is the way to get as close to hearing the original as one can.

This isn’t actually the “video” but the opening sequence to his movie “Purple Rain”. Much better than the video. By far his best movie of the 3 he has done. The “Purple Rain” soundtrack is in my estimate the BEST movie soundtrack of all time. This album is one of his best as well. The “Purple Rain” tour was my first concert I had attended. Sheila E. and Morris day and the Time opened for him. What a concert.

    They were ‘aight.

The thing I like about Purple Reign is they capture the PRince Era when he was at his funkiest! Now he is a much more tamed down version and too religious!

  • BigBlackRod

Actually, Prince was at his funkiest during his “Dirty Mind” era; you ain’t LIVED til you see him do “Head” live…PEACE.
