“Some dude named Damien” Too Funny.
I can understand why MTV scaled back videos, they were just changing with the times. But with the rise of video iPods and the net, TRL, and music videos on TV, just don’t stand a chance anymore.
Why wait until 4PM when you can watch your favorite video on YouTube anytime you want?
As someone who turned 13 a month after TRL premiered, I can definitely say it was a huge show for my generation. I, too, am among the many others who haven’t watched it in about 5 years but I loved the finale and was shocked to discover Jesse Camp was still alive! And all the 30+ people who complain that MTV doesn’t show videos anymore are forgetting the fact that, even if they did play videos 24/7, my generation doesn’t watch music videos on TV anymore. We can view any video we want anytime on the internet or our cell phones! For us, MTV means something markedly different from the previous generation: for us, MTV means The Real World, Singled Out, Cribs, The Hills, and, of course, TRL.
And what exactly do any of those shows [The Real World, Singled Out, Cribs, The Hills] have to do with music? Nothing but a bunch of self-absorbed “Hey, look at me!” plastic people. Blah.
BOOOHOOOO Carson is a tool and MTV is a corporate pop pig. They should have stuck with music videos. There is more than just pop music. MTV needs to die off like the Dinosaur that it is. They got rid of beavis and buthead because they were too violent only to put on celebrity deathmatch gimme a !@#$@# break. And they got rid of MtvX for mtv jams as if they didn’t play enough rap crap. In sumation MTV SUCKS!!!
TRL was a show I liked at first, but then got to where I didn’t care for it anymore. It was so repetitive. Maybe it just needed more variation to it, some spice? I dunno.
But then again, it’s really sad to see MTV being washed away with reality shows such as Real World, A Shot at Love, The Gauntlet, Paris Hilton: My New Bff, TheHills, etc. Music Television? I think not anymore. We need MTV to be what it’s supposed to be about: music. Throw those crappy reality shows to some other channel for people who care.
