I’ll admit it: I’m always curious to check out the results of the latest medical study from an academic institution. Read the full post.

Hmm. Where would the new Guns N’ Roses single fall?

Considering that mournful, haunting music of any genre makes me happiest, I find this whole thing funny.
This study hits on something that I’ve always thought intuitively, as I suspect have many others. Personally, heavy metal (and I mean HEAVY metal where there isn’t so much singing as there is screaming-As I Lay Dying, Bury Your Dead–not Ozzy or Metalica) brings out the anxiety for me. I can’t stand it and my husband loves it. Nothing is worse for me to come home and find it blaring loudly throughout the house. But it’s soothing for my husband! And conversely, I love R&B old school soul music (Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald) and even pop music (can I hear it for Xtina’s Beautiful?) that just annoys my husband.
After reading some of the other posts, I just want to say that I took the study to mean that the “relaxing” music doesn’t necessarily have to be country–it’s all up to the individual, but that whatever that “relaxing” music is, it actually has a physically effect on you. The same with whatever your “anxious” music genre happens to be. I don’t think the debate is really that specifically country music is relaxing for all and metal is not.
