I am an original '60s Trekker. I saw the new movie at an IMAX, the opening weekend. Okay, so it didn't follow what we all "know" happened; Spock explained it all, so that is what happened. It is now canon, and I'm ready for more. I just want to see some deck plans, and figure out all of those phasers!

I have to agree with Warlock. I'm a huge fan of all star trek, the 5 series (and the TAS too) and 10 (now 11) films. I'm a huge huge fan of TOS and I really really enjoyed the new movie (twice XD) I like how they manage to put the 7 people all together and the funny things that happen (that for a non-trek will laught, and a trekker will laught louder)and hell, I like the new enterprise. Star Trek needed this new fresh start. I don't care that all we've seen only old Spock and us "know" what happened in the real timeline, we can whatch it again on DVD or re-runs on tv. So what? why people are so closed? if they call themselves fans of star trek they should know that Trek means embrace new things...people who say that they don't like cos ...they made it too well and it's making money?? sorry, what? XD and cos the enterprise it's different..emm..how many enterprise are? so what, cos this is a new version of the original? in 1979 they already change it..and I really like it. J.J. good work

Im a fan from the 60's I have always liked Star Trek and I like change. Same with Battlestar Galatica, when everyone was debating I told them to just wait let's see what will become of it. I say the same with Star Trek, granted it's not the one we grew up with but lets give it a chance.

@Horns:Your assertion seems to be that there is or was a dichotomy between a fun, exciting, good film and a film accurate to established Star Trek canon.
There's not. And no, they wouldn't have had to "spend millions" on continuity checking. All they had to do was not write a story that invalidated 43 years of filmed Trek in the first five minutes. Believe it or not, there is a middle ground there. (Also, they probably could have found plenty of obsessive fans to vet it for free.)
I don't really care that the Enterprise looks different inside and out. It would have been nice to see an exterior more accurate to the TV show (google around, plenty of people have been crafting up their own versions) and a more familiar/functional bridge layout, it would have cost them nothing extra, but I'm not going to dismiss the film based on that. I don't even care about the small anachronisms, like the Tribble on Scotty's desk or the Cardassian drink being ordered in the bar. (cont'ed next comment)

Hell, I don't even care that Black Holes Do Not Work That Way, or that apparently the Enterprise has five warp cores.
I care that every scene involving Spock's emotions seemed forced, from the relationship with Uhura to his breakdown/epiphany/recovery within five minutes.
I care that somehow the Beastie Boys and Nokia have survived to the 22nd century.
I care that there's a _window_ at the front of the bridge, that apparently exists to have flashing warnings overlaid on it and to crack in moments of stress.
I care that Ambassador Spock is off to lead the new Vulcan colony, instead of either a) briefing Starfleet on his future knowledge or b) trying to repair the timeline.
I care about the contrived coincidences that put Those Exact Seven People on the bridge crew of the Enterprise, and how Kirk was promoted directly from Cadet to Captain.
Oh, but there were pretty explosions and nifty CGI. And apparently, that's all I should care about.

If you are a fan of the old Star Trek DO NO GO SEE THIS MOVIE! It is NOT Star Trek! As a matter of fact, they ruined Star Trek in the first five minutes. If they make another (and they will) they MUST fix the errors that they created, or I will not go to see it. When it comes out, I will wait to hear if the original plot line has been repaired, and if it is not, I will write off Star Trek forever! I can't believe that they were so disrespectful to the integrity of such a beloved series.

I'm not too fond of the new Enterprise either, BUT I do like the look of the "older" Federation vessels like the Kelvin.
I understand if older Trek fans don't like this movie, but a lot of comments sound like they're coming from "otaku"; which if you know the word, is not a good thing.

How dare this movie make 3 times more then any other Trek movie in it's opening weekend? How dare this movie be fun, exciting, well acted and actually worth the price of a ticket? How dare this movie not conform exactly to what .001% of the population want it to be? I am sick and tired of these movie producers making good, enjoyable pictures when they clearly should be painstakingly researching everything every actor in the history of every Star Trek episode and movie ever said to make sure they don't possibly get anything wrong. What makes them think that they could use modern CGI and special effects to make a movie people would like? They should have spent millions of dollars to make a movie with the same props, special effects and actors they used in the 60's. I know I have been DYING to see "Spock's Brain" on the big screen.

I agree with James T Kirk below...
I work in a church and let me tell you... any new change that comes about and it's RED ALERT!
I encourage the purists out there to be thankful for a new cinematic story.... enjoy this fresh new interpretation and a chance to re-imagine a brave new universe!

"YOUNG MINDS, FRESH IDEAS..."
I admit... as as Star Trek purist, I was a bit disappointed when I first saw the new 1701. In all actuality, the ship looks VERY COOL from different CINEMATIC ANGLES on the big screen - I LOVE JJ's "warp effects," particularly the END of each warp!!!! The effect seems SO MUCH MORE realistic !!!
Though I have a love/hate thing with time travel in our ST Universe, I will always remember the seed planted in a late Voyager episode dealing with time travel corruption! What a PHENOMENAL LIBRARY of Star Trek SciFi lore upon which JJ and others in the future may draw from!
In essence, JJ has breathed a whole new life into our beloved Start Trek Universe, Thank God. Somebody @ Paramount was intelligent enough to know that it was worth a gamble to spend $$MMM on a new Trek movie - WITH A NEW CREATIVE TEAM AT THE HELM as well!
The casting for the new movie was monumentally perfect too!
