Doth the lady (or gentleman) wish to partaketh in LAIRE after seeing 'Role Models'?

Mclovin_lI don’t LARP (Live Action Role-Play), but after seeing Role Models and thinking it might be fun to plot against a king (and, okay, wield a foam sword), I could be talked into a day of LAIRE (Live Action Interactive Roleplaying Explorers) on several conditions:

1) Like the countrymen of KISS-My-Anthia, my costume could be non-traditional/badass.

2) Someone would volunteer to sew my non-traditional/badass costume. (And also to forge my sword and bedazzle its handle like one of Mariah’s mikes.)

3) I wouldn’t have to run.

What about you? What would it take to get you in the live action role-playing game? And while we’re talking about Role Models, vote for the actor who made you laugh the hardest in our poll below. Going into the movie, I was sure it’d be Bobb’e J. Thompson, a.k.a. foul-mouthed Ronnie. But there’s a reason Seann William Scott landed in the center of The Bullseye in EW‘s latest issue. (And it’s not because we watched him admit that he likes David Archuleta’s "Crush" on VH1′s Top 20 Video Countdown over the weekend — though we do love that. It’s because of the way he delivered that line asking if the "get out of jail free card" was based on something real.) Paul Rudd is a contender, thanks to his campfire story. Jane Lynch is a scene-stealer as Sturdy Wings’ director and an ex-cocaine addict. And seriously, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (pictured, as LAIRE-loving Augie) really does look like a young Marvin Hamlisch.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I want to, solely because of Paul Rudd’s dance on The Daily Show last week. Funniest thing I saw last week. You Tube it if you haven’t seen it. Glad to hear the movie’s funny, too.

The LARP Alliance was contacted to help with the execution of filming Laire and providing larp insight for some accuracy in the movie. It’s in the credits. Just go to LARP Alliance dot net. Also, the weapons were provided by Greg of Iron Liege. you can find them at www dot ironliege dot com!

This movie was so hilarious! I chose Jane Lynch, but really, they all had wonderful moments.

KISS-My-Anthia Rules! This is a funny movie.

The movie was great, but it had way too many gay jokes. Especially after what this country did to gays and lesbians last week, the juvenile gay humor was especially painful. But as a whole, a really great film. And there was something positive for gay men: naked Seann William Scott!

Yes, Mandi! I was totally like, LAIRE looks kindof fun. Anyway, very well-done comedy and Rudd & Scott balanced each other out and the kids were perfect.
    “E tu, you two?”
    P. Rudd dance (which he does a few seconds of in the movie in front of the tow truck):

    Yes, pelase!!!

*chuckles* Had no idea LAIRE was real, but being an active SCA-dian, I have a feeling I laughed a bit harder than those who were completely outside of the world. “It’s funny cuz it’s TRUE!!” was gasped out more than once…

I’ve actually been a player of the real LAIRE for 6 years. It’s a lot of fun and well worth it. http://www.laire.com
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m going to assume that if you show up to LAIRE expecting to see the movie version you’ll be confused.
But seriously, feel free to show up for a weekend. The site has the details of the upcoming event dates. And your first event is free! (excluding the cost of meals which will run you about $40 for dinner friday, breakfast saturday, feast saturday night, breakfast sunday morning (with enough money left over to buy some soda/snacks from our “bar”)

I’ve actually been a player of the real-life LAIRE(as real as a LARP gets anyway) for the past 6 years. It’s a lot of fun and well worth checking out.
    http://www.laire.com
The event starts friday night until sunday afternoon.
The next event starts the night of Dec 12, 2008. Future event dates can be seen on the web site.
Your first event is free (not including the cost of food which will run you about $40 including Dinner Friday, Breakfast Saturday, Feast Saturday Night and Breakfast Sunday with some money left over for lunches and snacks/soda from our “bar”.)
Come check us out. Winter events tend to be pretty packed (we had nearly 150 people this month) so please go to the web site and send mail to the Logistics contact or the E-Board director before showing up to make sure we’ll have a bed for you. Summer events (when the tents are up and available) have a lot more sleeping spots and it won’t be nearly as difficult.

I’d fallen out of the SCA because most of the groups in my area seemed filled with costume nazi’s. It took a lot of the fun out. Plus with the heavy weaponry you’d often wait 2 plus hours to fight for 15 minutes.
We tried to get a boffer (foam swords) group going and the SCAdians looked down on it because “foam toys are for kids”. We just wanted to fight and not have to waste any time prepping for it. After seeing Role Models I spent some time online and found Amtgard. It’s a blast! All the fun and fighting and none of the ego.
