Instead of going on and on about the Oscar-winning Italian composer’s storied, 50-plus-year career and gushing over how many of his 500 or so film and TV scores are instantly recognizable pieces of pop culture, I’m just gonna let his work speak for itself with a few clips, like the one below from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. (More after the jump.) Happy 80th, signore!
Fistfull of Dollars
The Thing
The Untouchables
Frantic
Mission to Mars

Ladies and Gents, please also partake of any and all pieces from “The Mission” which are flat out GORGEOUS.
Gabriel’s Oboe:
thank you so much for the tribute to this maestro. however you forgot to include a snippet of the beautiful and mesmerizing score of Once Upon a Time in the West, a career best for both Morricone and director Sergio Leone
I rarely bandy the word genius around but I think it fits in this case. Even if Morricone had only created the prototypical spaghetti western soundtrack (so many to choose from!) he would still rank up with the greats. Throw in his prodigious output and a legion of other classic scores and he is truly a film music legend. I will a agree with Ian and cite his operatic Once Upon a Time in the West as his best all around score.

Thank you for honoring Ennio Morricone. I’m not able to listen to Cinema Paradiso without swells of emotion and eyes welling with tears. Moves me every single time. Happy Birthday Maestro!
