About that thing that (sniff) happened last night (sniff, sniff) on 'Ghost Whisperer'

Spoilerphobes, don’t press play. The rest of us will be discussing the episode after the jump.

I’ve known Jim’s death was coming since my colleague Michael Ausiello confirmed the news (and asked me to describe David Conrad’s character for him, and I rambled on about Jim wearing wifebeaters to bed — professional!). But I think that spoiler made watching last night’s episode even more painful. When Jim went back to the cabin, alone, at night, I sat on my couch saying, "No, Jim. No." (The chairs couldn’t wait, Jim. Really?) When that detective shot into the cabin, not knowing whether he’d be hitting Jim or the jilted fiancé, I wanted his badge. (How do you feel about that shot? ) When Owen, the little ghost with leg braces, made me cry at the hospital, I knew I was seriously vulnerable. ("No, thank you… you were my friend" — I can’t believe it got me!) And when Melinda finally realized that the Jim she was speaking with wasn’t the Jim in the hospital bed, I lost it. "Please, not you. Please, not you." I’m gonna write something I’ve never written before: Well done, Jennifer Love Hewitt.

What do you think of how Jim’s death played out? And where would you like the story line to go now? (I’m up for anything that gives Conrad more to do. I’ve loved him since Relativity.)

I have been dreading it. I am hoping that something mythic happen and Jim comes back alive. I want Melinda to have some happiness in her life. Even if what I predict happens; you know Melinda has to be pregnant. It would be bittersweet. But something was up with the whole way it was handled. NO COP would do something like that; especially if they had no idea who they were seeing in the house. It just seemed so sudden. So I hope the show knows what it’s doing. I love the show, so I will be watching no matter what. But they are taking a risk. I liked that Jim centered Melinda wacky day job with a stable home life. Maybe Jim will be like Eli and come back alive but with the knowledge of the dead to help his wife.

I had a real problem with a cop just shooting blindly into the house. He never announced that he was a police officer. He had no way of knowing what was REALLY going on in the house. And he had no way of knowing WHOM he was shooting (and he knew that Jim was supposed to be there). That whole part of it was just SOO messed up (frankly, it would have made more sense if Hunter/Bob had shot him). The only way they can redeem themselves on that part of it is if how ‘messed up’ that was becomes part of the storyline.
I do agree that knowing ahead of time that Jim was going to die actually made it harder to watch (I guess we should be relieved it was “leaked”?). And I won’t be surprised if Melinda is pregnant either.

Yeah I felt for Mel, I was afraid Jen would not pull that scene of but she did just fine, she’s no Ellen Pompeo but she did drama ok

  • Mary

It’s over…how can we expect to accept Jims death? Melinda with someone else will seem to fake…im out

Is this show turning into “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir?” Sounds like it is. It’s definitely not “Topper”–too sad and weepy all the time.

I hated this show. I was good, grant you but Jim never should have died. He DID ground Melinda, love her and understand her. I guess the best we can hope for he is content not going into the light. Yes-Melinda should be pregnant and he should be able to watch the birth of his baby. He needs to stay on the show in a new capacity.
Why can’t TV have a deeply in love couple stay alive and married? There is a “feel good” quality to that and I think viewers benefit from it.

  • Lisa

I will hate this if they really killed him and try to get him to stick around as a ghost — Melinda would never allow it. However, taking into context the previews for next week’s episode and comments that the actor who plays Jim made in TVG (link below), I think Jim is in a coma, communicating with Melinda as a ghost for now, but will go back to his body and “wake up” out of the comma. Thoughts?

I have watched Ghost Whisperer since day 1, but I am stopping after Jim’s death. There was no need for it… you could have killed anyone else- but Jim? COME ON! The detective that fired the shot from 100 yards away without knowing who was who…? what a joke! like something like that would ever happen… honestly the only people that should be shot are the writers

  • alamary

I will not watch anymore if Jim is gone

  • Jayne

I want them to have love. I know that’s vague, but well, whatever. When all is said and done, I just somehow want them to figure out a way for them to be together. I don’t know how they do that exactly. Actually I do, but it makes me sad thinking about it, but that’s what I want them to figure out how to do.

  • Stephanie S.

Well, I had some idea that he was going to die also. And the scene with Owen in the hospital made me cry, too for some reason! I thought that was stupid of the detective to shoot when he didn’t even know who he was shooting at. Dummmbbb. And yeah suprisingly, Jennifer Love did a good job freaking out about it. Also when he got shot, that was some great acting on her part. But I’m not going to stop watching just because Jim is dead, because honestly, he annoyed me just a bit because there are no guys like that in exsistence. He was praticaly perfect.

Last night while I was watching Ghost Whisperer my TV blacked out just at the end when Jim was talking to Melinda after “he woke up” so thanks for the 2 minutes I missed. I really love this show. This one and CSI were the only shows that I made sure I didnt miss. Jim dying was a real shocker. I thought they would never do that. I thought it was bad when they killed off Aisha Tyler.I do hope they have something interesting in mind for this story line but, the show wont be the same without Jim in it.I hope CBS knows what they are doing. From other blogs I have read alot of people are not going to watch the show anymore and that would mean the end of Ghost Whisperer for good. I am still going to watch but I dont like the idea of her having no one to turn to. I am going to have a wait and see attitude.

  • d-rock

i think it’s boderline brilliant for a show about a woman who communicates with the dead to have a major character die.

  • Holly

I want Jim back! I have been a fan since the beginning and the show will never be the same. Killing Jim was the worst decision ever. I am not sure I want to watch anymore.

  • Steve

Thanks goodness he’s gone. First, last season he pressures her into having a baby, and this season that’s all she can talk about. Nothing kills a show more than a baby, I think we can ALL agree on that.

  • Sheila

I have watched this from the start and I cannot believe that you would even consider writing Jim off. At least you could have waited to write the professor off until you had ditched Jim. I am with the other folks, I do not want to watch it anymore. It is a feel good show, I know it is weepy at times but at least you know that you have a heart. I hope Melinda is pregnant. At least there will be a part of Jim left on the show.

  • Sara

One of my favorite things about this show–and I’ve been watching it from the beginning–was Jim and Melinda’s relationship. I’m with Holly, I don’t know if I even want to watch anymore.

  • WingsStef

I went and spoiled myself too. So I knew. I agree about the detective. What the heck was he thinking?
I am keeping an open mind. Its sad. I do hope they did allow Melinda to be pregnant. But in way, the second she said, “Let’s have that baby”. I was like, “Jim’s doomed.” So I have my doubts. But I love the show, and am interested to see where this is going. Andrea did opt to crossover after an episode of dragging her feet. But Jim, maybe he stays around a bit longer. It seems to run in the family. Jim’s brother lingered as well.

HOW CAN THEY DO THAT TO MELINDA? WITHOUT JIM THE SHOW WILL BOMB!JENNIFER CHARACTER IS NOTHING WITHOUT HIM!WHO WILL SAVE HER NOW?JIM IS THE GLUE FROM THE BEGINNING.THEY BETTER THINK OF SOMETHING FAST LIKE IT WAS ALL A DREAM EPISODE!I TOTALLY AGREE WHY CANT THEY LET ANYONE BE HAPPY?THIS ISINT DAY TIME SOAPS!

  • Cynthia

If it were me I’d put him in a coma similar to a past episode let them work things out and somehow work in saving his life. Jim was the one constant in Melinda’s life (as far as the story goes) he kept her grounded. It would be nice to see them enhance his character, just don’t write him off the show.
    Just a thought

  • Eos

Melinda and Jim’s relationship was kind, trusting, vulnerable, supportive & loving. Beautiful role models for what marriages could be. I cried and cried. Of course it could just be hormones, but I know I will miss Jim very very much.

  • Caitlin

I was crying SO hard. I absolutely HATED this. Their relationship was one of the top reasons I watched the show. I may watch the next few episodes, but I can’t promise I’ll stick to it. I LOVED Jim’s character.

  • Dee

Personally I think CBS sucks. I hate that the characters we care about are disposable to them.

  • Anonymous

stupid that they killrd Jim they should of killed her mother instead.

  • Stacy

This is the worst decision made on this show. There are thousands of us who won’t watch the show anymore. Just go to the CBS forums and read the angry comments. These producers and writers were not thinking by ruining a great marriage, throwing their audience into gigantic mourning and taking the series in some strange direction.
    It was idiotic.

  • amy

i’m shocked! i have not watched it yet. but read it in the ew mag and i was blowed away, please let this be a dream or something. how is she suppose to have a baby now. i loved him being on the show! he can’t be dead. he was her rock he was her everything. i just hope the writers have something good in the works to keep me watching now, because without him, i have no clue where they are going to go. JUST DON’T CANCEL THE SHOW !

  • CJ

Bad move. I think the show played itself out. Jim was about the only reason I watched…now it will just be about HER!!! Seriously…bring him back.

I’ve been reading other blogs and interviews from David Conrad. I think that he is revived to be in a coma. Then he awakes and thinks he is a guy named Sam – he has amnesia. Then he has to fall in love with Melinda again. This makes more sense than killing him off. I think they would loose too many viewers.
