PopWatch Previewer: 'Monsters vs Aliens,' 'The Reader,' 'Cadillac Records,' and more!

Monsters vs. Aliens

Plot: A ragtag group of monsters team up to protect Earth from an alien invasion.

Looks like: The Incredibles meets Monsters Inc.

Verdict: With such obvious debts to two of Pixar’s biggest hits, this save-the-world adventure feels a little stale. Maybe seeing it in 3-D will add another dimension?

The Reader

Plot: A young man (David Kross) in postwar Germany discovers the horrible truth about the woman he loves (Kate Winslet).

Looks like: The most depressing movie ever. In a good way.

Verdict: The story looks riveting, Winslet looks fantastic, and that German boy is giving me weird Michael York flashbacks.  I’ll definitely be at this one opening night — I just might mix some antidepressants in with my Junior Mints.

Cadillac Records

Plot:The true story of the 1950’s Chicago-based record label run by LeonardChess (Adrien Brody), featuring legends like Muddy Waters (JeffreyWright), Chuck Berry (Mos Def), and Etta James (Beyoncé Knowles).

Looks like: Dreamgirls II

Verdict: Beyoncé — who executive produced the movie — looksand sounds pitch-perfect as Etta James. If the drama is as passionateas the music, Cadillac could drive all the way to the Oscars.

The Tale of Despereaux

Plot: A misfit mouse gets in trouble for befriending a human princess.

Looks like: Ratatouille meets Shrek. What’s with all the copycat ‘toons?

Verdict: Despereaux’s source book is a Newberry Medal winner, but this mouse-centric movie looks a little…cheesy.

I can’t wait for Cadillac Records – the rest… meh. But I’ll probably get Tale of Despereaux on DVD because my two-year-old likes mice.

So excited for The Reader and Cadillac Records!

Why do American movies always depict ‘foreign people’ as people speaking English with foreign accents? They’re all speaking English to each other, but to show that they’re actually German they have a ‘German’ accent! It’s so confusing. Either have them speak German or English, but stop with the accents, it makes no sense. Right?

The Reader does look like a great movie, though. I loved the book and I’ll definitely go see it, I’ll just be a little annoyed by the accents… it’s a pet peeve, I guess.

i love the line in Monsters vs. Aliens about how aliens only land in America. lol After seeing Cadillac Records’ trailer, I’m more likely to watch that than I was to watch Dreamgirls.

cadillac records looked like dreamgirls. i think that may hurt it. the fact that beyonce is in it will draw the similarities (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing). hopefully this movie will not have a big old lull in the second half.and i like mos def, but he was butchering chuck berry.hope that was just because it was the background
m vs a looked pretty bad.the fact that the gelatinous monster is called bob irks me for some reason.and the aliens only in the US line actually bothered me too. I just saw a big story on a big forest in the UK where aliens apparently land.
the reader looks pretty good actually. i wasn’t expecting to be interested, but i was.
tales of d: EW had that up on one of these before.I honestly think it looks like it’s been done before. And while the animation does look nice, it doesn’t look spectacular really.I don’t like his voice. I don’t think it fits with the character’s design really.I DO like Broderick’s voice in animation though. just not here.
    a MAYBE

Monsters vs. Aliens gets my vote. That’s Hugh Laurie as Dr. Cockroach! It looks silly but sometimes silly is just right.

Monsters vs. Aliens looks like big, goofy fun, and a welcome reprieve from the usual wisecracking animals of recent animated films. Speaking of which, Desperaux looks beautiful and has a fine literary pedigree, but I’m afraid it might be overlooked by the younger crowd because of its gentle tone.
