Happy birthday, Taryn Manning (of Boomkat)!

I imagine right now a lot of you are all like, "A birthday post for Taryn Manning? Seriously?" But I’m also betting those of you expressing that sentiment are only familiar with Taryn Manning the Actress (8 Mile, Crossroads) and not with Taryn Manning the Singer (of the musical duo Boomkat). Yes, these Taryn Mannings are one and the same (and both turning 30 today), but I’m more obsessed with the latter, especially on days like today when I repeatedly play Boomkat’s 2003 single "The Wreckoning," which inexplicably was not a huge hit. WHY WAS THIS NOT A HUGE HIT, POPWATCHERS? I need answers. And your explanations may give Taryn some comfort on her big day. Press play. Then explain it all. Thank you. And happy birthday, Taryn!

This just in: Boomkat’s MySpace page is promising a new album soon. BOOMKAT!

You’re totally right. I remember this song and thought it was pretty darn good.

I tried like crazy to get everyone I knew hooked on it. I’ll have to pull it out tonight.

I thought I was only person who loved/remembered this song. I agree; why wasn’t it a huge hit?

Yay! I love this song. It’s on my iPod, but I haven’t heard it in a while. I’m gonna play it as soon as I get home tonight!

Great album great song, everyone else I had listen liked it also, definitely should of been a hit. Maybe it was cause it dropped the same time she did crossroads/britney spears and another song of hers was on that and the 8 mile sdtk

I have no clue why this was not a huge hit. The album is fantastic.

Um…the only thing I can guess is that maybe the US wasn’t ready in 2003 for white female bluesy rock singers. Only recently are artists like Anastacia and Nikka Costa (who seem to be in a similar genre) getting exposure around here. Who knows why some music strikes a chord (I’m so punny) with the general public at a certain time and others don’t? Example: Huey Lewis & The News had something like 11 #1 hits in the mid-80’s and NOTHING since – apparently it was the right sound at the right time. If they had tried it a few years earlier or later we may have never heard of them. It’s a bizarre business to be sure!

She’s also quite good on FX’s Sons of Anarchy.

Agreed–this song is great and wholly unappreciated. It always comes up on my iTunes and none of my friends have ever heard of it.

I love Boomkat ! Their song “Wasting my Time” is very good as well… I’m very happy they have a new album coming out !
