Farrelly Brothers' 'Three Stooges' movie: Who should they cast?

Categories: Film

Threestooges_lWith the world seemingly going to hell in a hand basket these days, we could use some eye-poking, gut-punching slapstick to lighten the mood, and off the top of my head, I can’t think of a better forum for that than a Farrelly Brothers-directed Three Stooges movie, currently set for a Nov. 20, 2009, release. Of course, it’s the casting that will determine whether this turns out to be a side-splitting tribute or disgraceful tarnishing of the Stooge legacy. I’m thinking Adam Sandler or Patton Oswalt as Moe, Will Arnett or Ryan Gosling as Larry (yes, Gosling), and David Koechner or Seth Rogen as Curly. Okay, PopWatchers, give us your dream Stooge cast.

I hate that I know this, but Larry is the one with curly hair, not Curly (a misnomer). And Will Ferrell would be perfect for Larry.

  • parabbi

Folks, its a mistake. Don’t do it. I will not be as good as the shorts. There is no way.

  • Kate

    Jack Black as Moe!

  • jlyn74

My biggest concern is that it’s going to end up being all sex-related humor. My family LOVES the classic Three Stooges and I would hate for the new movie to be filled with questionable content. btw, I think Jack Black would make a good Curly.

  • Heather

I will hurt the second person that says Jack Black as anyone. (First person gets a mulligan.)

  • dan

Moe should be Benicio Del Toro. He’s even expressed interest in the role according to AICN.

  • Anonymous

    Why, Oh Hollywood, why?

  • Phillip E. Banks

Please, please, please!!! No Jack Black; absolutely no Will Ferrell. Jim Norton as Moe, Tracey Morgan as Larry and Ricky Gervais as Curley. Tom Cruise in a cameo as Shemp.

  • Trisha

How about Seth Rogin as Curly? I can see that. We should get Will Ferrell in there as Larry (he’s kinda tall though) and Moe……Vince Vaughn or Jon Favreau…someone kind of stoic in the face.

  • JuliaM

How about nobody? Bleech, this is an awful idea. How about coming up with some fresh ideas, Hollywood?

  • krys

out of all your suggestions I suggest that ryan rynalods should be thrown into the mix

  • Rich

Though these three guys (four if you count Shemp- I’m not counting Joe or Curly Joe) were characters, they were also real people. It’s like trying to recast the Marx Brothers or Abbott and Costello. We saw how well (not) that worked with the Little Rascals.
Go ahead and make a movie about three short, ugly morons that specialize in slapstick and physical humor, but don’t call it the Three Stooges.

  • BC

The Little Rascals movie was actually very entertaining. I got a pickle…I got a pickle…I got a pickle hey hey hey hey…

  • Evan

    David Paymer as Larry

  • Eddie Eddings

Ya gotta remember that they were all short! Throwing Will Ferrell in the mix would stand out like a giraffe in a penguin cage. Better to use “unknowns” who can play and look the part rather than celebrities who look nothing like Howard, Howard and Fine.

If you want to see how this is going to turn out, rent 1992’s “Brain Donors”. A Hollywood attempt to recreate a Marx Brothers movie. Yikes. No one is asking for this. Hey why not try to remake Pee Wee’s Playhouse with Kevin Spacey as Pee Wee ?!?!?!?!

  • Al Fredo

There is only one legit response to this post, and that is to drop the idea.

  • Liz Sherman

I don’t think this is a a good idea. Oh dear it good just go so horribly wrong.

  • John W

Bruce Willis, Jonah Hill, Kyle Gass, or Andy Richter as Curly. Tyler Labine, David Paymer, Andy Samberg, Todd Louiso or Conan O’Brien as Larry. Gilbert Gottfried or Matthew Perry as Shemp. Jimmy Kimmel, Steve Carrell, Jason Alexander, Jeremy Piven or Frank Caleindo as Moe. I’d say Moe would be the toughest to cast.

  • Eric Friedmann

How about three male blog writers for EW?

  • Rich

Another reason it won’t work: they won’t actually hit each other. Jerome “Curly” Howard died of a brain hemorrhage that it’s generally believed was caused in part by the Stooges’ slapstick. The Farellys will use crappy CGI to reproduce primitive effects you couldn’t get away with today (for good reason).

  • Dr. No

    Moe – Brad Pitt
    Larry – Jerry Seinfeld
    Curly – John Goodman
    Shemp – Tom Sizemore.
Sounds awful right ? So does this movie idea. God help us.

  • snarky

NO ONE. I am with JuliaM on this one – this idea is a stinker!

  • Al

    Al Pacino as Larry
    Jack Nicholson as Curly
    Robert De Niro as Moe

  • CVRaveOn

“Our genius ain’t appreciated around here… let’s scram!”
    - Moe (MOVIE MANIACS, 1936)
Emil Sitka should be played by Jack Nicholson…and Ted Healy by the worst actor on the planet…Jay Leno.

  • Jenn

Adam Sandler would make me never want to see this movie. But I kind of don’t want to anyway. It just doesn’t seem like it would be very good at all. It’s hard to imagine the 3 Stooges being played in a movie. I’m gonna go watch some Stooges now.

  • jason

    a younger stooges?
    zac efron – moe
    joseph adams jonas – larry
    shia lebeouf – curly
    gael garcia bernal – shemp

  • John W

    Rosie O’ Donnell as Moe.
    Amy Poehler as Larry.
    Sarah Silverman as Curly.

  • Will

Are the Farrelly brothers going to have Moe, Larry and Curly playing with their semen? Bad idea this movie.

  • Frank Reighter

Billy West as (is) Larry. Anyone who watched his HBO special years ago as Larry, or his “General Larry Fine” on the Howard Stern Channel 9 (NJ) TV show, knows he did Larry better than Larry did!
